Check your local dump see if they have a “hatch pit” where they let you harvest others wood trash. My town has a gigantic dump that’s wood only and they let me come get as much as I want. They also chip up branches and logs delivered by arborists so I have all the chip for my garden and trees and all the lumber I want for projects I’ve gotten a ton of full sheets of plywood before and pallets galore so check your local dump and see if they have a wood pile they let you harvest from.

Never thought about cabinet shops for hardwood… I just got over 60 board feet of 2x8 rafter cut-offs from a home construction site, all pieces over 2ft long… free. Thanks , love your videos.

Keep the videos coming! I'd love to see a wood comparison between soft and hard wood, how they machine, and exotics and safety precautions with them.

Thank you for this advice. I'm just getting back into woodworking. Prices are outrageous and if I can get "scraps" like that, it would be a gold mine for me!

Explained trim ends and value . Wide boards can be planed or cut to make wooden tiles, 1x1 or 2x2 serve to make drawers furniture and other valued projects. Sawdust or chips can be pressed and formed into press board or chipboard. Wood can be jointed or doweled, etc. Merely found a few more uses. Enjoy! Later!😊

Awesome info from a South Texas guy for this North Texas guy ! I've been trying for a year and a half to get a LASER Engraver/Cutter table built, only to have EVERYTHING turn to...well, crap. This is good info for a wood supply if I can ever finish the table. Thanks !!!

As a bigger producer, one problem with guys getting the free stuff, is they want to go thru it and take my time to do it. Please don't do that if you are getting it for free. Just saying. If your in the western Colorado area, let me know, I have stuff I have to burn.

What part of Western CO are you in? I live in Denver. What kind of scraps do you have?

I have mostly ripping drops by big bundles, like 700-800 pounds per bundle. Montrose is where I'm at. Barnwood is the majority, then normal domestic woods. Almost always 2" and less.

We had a similar problem in the veneer shop. We would trash a lot of good wood, well all plywood and mdf. We were happy to let people take it but some people would try to set up camp in there while we are trying to work. We ended up kicking 2 out because they were feeling entitled and stopping production. But as long as you make sure you're out of everyones way we didn't care.

Discovered a company like yours in my area The owner showed me oak offcuts skids, i could clearly see hundreds of cuts over 24inches, didnt even need to browse through the stock pile. Asked him 1 simple question: how much you want for 2 skids (all that could fit in my caravan haha) Said 30 bucks You've got yourself a deal my good sir 😂

Quick Glance this is some of the worst yielding ive ever seen. Just because theyre a "big shop" doesn't mean throw away 10% On an automated ripsaw your "edgings" should be around 1/4" thick or less. On your automated chopsaw you dont chop 1foot off unless there is a knot, worm hole, checked end etc and im not seeing any of those defects in this video. The chopsaw can end trim +/- 1/32" so chopping all your 10ft to 9ft so they're all the same length is a huge loss/waste. a 10ft board can be trimmed to 119-15/16" long which is acceptable at any retail store. Good find for you, terrible loss for them

I own a security company, and for the last two years i have been getting contracts from construction companies for armed security because theft of tools and lumber is so bad...the employees have had confrontations with people caught on site stealing, etc.. Any way. I see these big companies trashing scrap 2x4 and 2x6 by the industrial dumpster load..it is usually 1 foot sections. When i asked the project manager about it, he said the same thing that was said in the video. When i work the site, i was told to take all the scrap i wanted. So every shift i load my tahoe rear end with lumber. Everything from 1 foot cutoffs to 3 and 4 feet. I have a garage with tons of "scrap". I have made great projects and had plenty of firewood for my shop.. But yeah, was told same thing
