I received my masters 2 years ago in Germany and will be a permanent resident soon. Honestly it was a great decision. My quality of life increased and having 30 days vacation doesn't hurt either. I would suggest it.

iwontupload Most everyone understands English, but fluent conversation is a bit harder to come by. Even so being able to speak German is recommended if only because the majority of courses any public University in Germany offers will be in German.
@naphackDT
@naphackDT 9 лет назад
It still helps to speak basic German regardless of whether your courses are all in English. For starters, most Signs outside of the university are in German and while universities generally have an English version for all the important signs, handouts and documents, it only goes so far. Yes, we have some students, who speak no German at all where I study, but they have it far more rough than even those, who speak broken German with a heavy Indian/Pakistani accent. The main point here is that people are far more friendly and far more willing to help, if you at least show some effort to speak their language.
@Cthulhudesabimes
@Cthulhudesabimes 9 лет назад
+naphackDT Yeah, plus the vast majority of the best courses and teachers in Germany (as well as much of Switzerland and eastern Europe) are in German. After all, it's the German taxpayers who are providing this opportunity based on a return of investment model, which really requires graduates to know German to function. If US students in Germany don't know much German, then the outcry will rise and Americans will be barred from attending German universities for free like this. (There have already been calls in this direction which for now have been rejected, though more and more formerly English classes in Germany are being abolished or converted to German for this reason.) If you're an American taking advantage of this opportunity, don't be a free-loader. If nothing else, show your appreciation by learning some German, which will help to make sure this option stays open for other Americans too.

Douglas Paulson So what should we do? Vote for one of the bat shit crazy republican warmongers that have been bought by special interest groups? As for not knowing "where money come from or how to spend it" your DEFINITELY talking about the republicans/conservatives right? You know the ones who want to keep cutting taxes for the rich and corporations, that are unwilling to pay workers properly, that have given us a grossly bloated defense budget while continuously cutting education, that think people feel ENTITLED to money they've payed to the government with the EXPRESS purpose of having it returned later (social security), the ones who are deluded about the poor and how welfare works and how much people are actually paid by it, etc. etc. etc. You're telling me should vote for one of them instead of the guy who wants to tax the rich properly, cut the defense budget, raise minimum wage to at LEAST a living one, improve education (from 1st - 12th grade) and make college more affordable, keep social programs (medicare/medicade, welfare, social security) for people that who need them, who HASN'T, or at least not to the degree of republicans/conservatives have, been bought by corporate America? Really?

Even if they leave directly after finishing their studies. They had hopefully great experiences, learnt about our culture and made connections which hold possible a liftime. When they are back in their countries they share their views about germany, tell about their experiences, compare their own with germanies culture critcily and still may have friends here which can develop also into buisness relations. This is not a zero sum game, but to be compared with planting a tree which overtime may grow into something good, helpfull perhaps beautifull. //Edit new keyboard, less missspellings hopefully ^^

The Fresh prince of German Air 1942 Now, this is the story all about how My life got flip-turned upside down, And I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called German Air. In West Russia born and raised, On the battlefield was where I spent most of my days, Shooting booting nading out And all shootin some Nazis' outside of the School, When a couple of guys, They were up to no good, Startin making trouble in my neighborhood, I got in one little fight and my General got scared, He said 'Ya movin' wit ya Comrades in the German Air .' I whistled for a Humvee, and when it came near, The license plate said "Flesh" and had a dice in the mirror, If anything I could say that this Humvee was rare, But I thought "Nah, forget it, yo homes, to German Air!" I, pulled, up to the house about 7 or 8, And I yelled to the solider "Yo homes, smell ya later!" Looked at my bae, I was finally there, Sit on my throne, as the Prince of German Air

Sure - education may cost a lot less in Germany, but don't expect to get the individualized attention from professors as you might get here in the USA. Also, if you manage to finally get a degree from a German university, will it be recognized in the USA just as much as a degree from an American university?

watersignwater 1st comment with healthy common sense, greetings from germany, what the turds didnt told is, that you earn as a student, depending on your intercourses not really a lot of money, so if you were not born rich you will have to have 1 or 2 jobs, the citys with the universitys are some of the most expensive locations you can live. Next thing is because of this shit i cant go to the uni either because i have to work my *** off to pay for all that ridiculous nonsense either forced on us like the US deployments on german soil (yeah you americans let us pay for 70 years for our own occupation by times think of it plz) or all that and i excuse for the word *parasitic* scum our government floods on us. I highly recommend to leave this country, no whole europe before that multiculti apesh** goes bang. BTW even IF you decide and probably get an pleseant degree, we have an mostly unspoken and native behaivior to employ us first then the guy from overseas, youre not the first Universitydegrees have been inflationed over the last 10 years and we have a thing called jobcenter . . . naaa thats to much in short do not come here the boat is full
@MaximKretsch
@MaximKretsch 9 лет назад
MsOtzelot Nonsense. In Germany you'll be hired if you are a skilled worker or engineer, no matter whether you're white, black or martian. We can't afford any more to waste the talents of those who keep things going. In my own company we have people from all over the world. On the other hand things will soon turn increasingly bad here for those who only come to mooch around in the social welfare system.
@MrOtzelot
@MrOtzelot 9 лет назад
If times get harder, and they actually get harder, its in the human nature to benefit the own people first, even if times are not getting harder its on the long term view natural that the ethnic majority benefit its own people, and its a fact our really, and i mean the top notch engineers are fleeing germany, thats what i experience, they do not want to get robbed by the state by taxes and inflation.
@MaximKretsch
@MaximKretsch 9 лет назад
MsOtzelot The top notch engineers stay, of which I'm the living proof. :-) If times get harder people simply look out who is of service to them and who is vermin. I can guarantee you that language or skin colour will play the LEAST role for the question with whom I share food and with whom I trade fire. Your concept of "government" is not the concept of government we know here. And I can also guarantee that the day the state turns out to be unable to ensure your personal safety by maintaining a minimum of public order face to the rioting, looting crowd on the streets you'll start whining "If I only had paid some more taxes" - but it'll be too late.

@Julemacgrumble
@Julemacgrumble 9 лет назад
Yes, they do. It depends what you study, but you are almost guaranteed to find a university teaching your subject almost entirely in English or at the very least hold the lectures in English and use English literature. You're more likely to find that in larger cities though or in very business-focused universities like in the University of Mannheim (just to name an example I'm familiar with). Nontheless speaking German does definitely make things easier for you (and is not that hard to learn from what I've heard) but it's no requirement. Just socially convenient :)
@Niosus
@Niosus 9 лет назад
Alexis Maria Learn some basics before you go. Go a month or 2 before classes start and just immerse yourself. You'll pick it up incredibly fast. There is no faster way to learn a language. Most people do speak English to some extent, so you can always fall back to that if you really can't figure a way to say what you want, just be sure to ask them how they would say it afterwards. It'll be more effort because some things will go over your head during the lectures, so you'll have to look up what you missed.
@MaximKretsch
@MaximKretsch 9 лет назад
Alexis Maria I once knew an American student who came here to study chemistry with hardly any language knowledge, just because her professor in the US told her that she would have to study in Germany to be successful in her later career. After two years you couldn't distinguish her from a native German any more.

the catch is this: 1) 90% of courses are offered in german (which is logic). how many people outside central europe speak german FLUENTLY ENOUGH TO ATTEND UNIVERSITY COURSES very few. so thats why they are not overcrowded. if it was english or spanish countries forget it. it would be overpacked lol 2) most german diploma might not be recognized in a loot of countries where german isnt the used language. so you can only get a job in a german country. so you are stuck working in germany & guess whos gonna take 60% tax 😉

The catch is that Germany is "getting them young" so to speak...they are getting talented young people who are ready to live in a foreign country, educate them and, more often them not, in the end those people stay in the country and continue to be a benefit for the rest of their lives.

@TheThOdOr1s
@TheThOdOr1s 9 лет назад
Atom1cSasquatch All across the EU, all universities that answer to the European System are required BY LAW to have English, French and German as language options, instead of just the local language. Althought keep in mind that for non-European citizens: tuition cost, prerequisites for enrolment, and other factors might differ drastically between countries. As a rule of thumb (that pretty much applies everywhere): 1)Having a document that proves your proficiency in any of those languages is almost always a prerequisite. 2)Enrlolment and Tuition costs aren't everything. Degrees are equally prestigious all over Europe, so you can save a lot of money by going to countries like Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Slovakia, the Checz Rep, Poland, even if tuition is in some cases more expensive there (still not even close to what America has), because living in those countries is a lot cheaper. 3)And finally (which I think applies to all education), DO YOUR RESEARCH. Don't just blindly go anywhere. Almost All EU countries are light-years ahead from the US in terms of education, so almost all of them will be a better choice, but still... Do your research, look at many countries and regions, choose wisely, be prepared. Good luck ^_^

www.hochschulkompass.de/en/degree-programmes/study-in-germany-search/advanced-degree-programme-search.html There are no tuition fees at public universities in Germany. You only have to pay a semester fee (about € 300) for which you get free use of public transport. You will have to pay for your accommodation and other costs such as health insurance.

MIC2077 but is studying in english is as cheap and as good as german universities in germany ?
@ParaonoidPanda
@ParaonoidPanda 9 лет назад
Daniel ghassa as far is i know (and i'm from germany) it is. i don't know why it would be more expensive because at most universities you don't have to pay at all (except for material like books) and it's not that we have german-only and english-only universities, mostly it's just universities offering german and english classes (more german classes, i guess, but still).

ParaonoidPanda what about LIVING in germany? I live in Houston and I can BARELY manage here. I only make 400 bucks every two weeks. My bills are roughly 600 a month.

I am very sad when I think about what our goverment is doing with our tax. We are working hard and paying a lot of tax for the future of GERMANS but they give it to everyone else than germans. I would prefere that foreign students have to accept a contract, that they work for germany until the debt is cleared. Education is expensive, as you see in the USA, why should I support a foreign student with my tax?
@nutaki6841

this is so small minded......if they stay and work in Germany after their studies Germany benifits of them...if they leave they speak German, know about the mindset of the Germans and will be the perfekt conection between buisneses......the profesors are paid anyway so some students more are not more expensive.

Well, there are studies about this and guess what, it is a net benefit for Germany. For one, the students who are in the country to study, they might not pay for university, but they pay rent, for food, they shop in Germany and a lot of them work, hence they pay taxes, too. Two, the vast majority of them stay in Germany after they finished their studies anyway, without any need to force them. And those people, they usually end up big tax-payers down the line, paying back their education tenfold in the long run. Well-educated are always a benefit for society. And since it is harder for foreign students to get admitted, they whole thing is basically a scheme which allows Germany to brain drain other countries by investing in young talents early. It's actually quite clever, if you are able to think a few years ahead.

why should germany pay for YOUR college education? The only reason ( i don´t blame you for that) you came her is because going to college is very cheap comparing to earn your bachelor or master degree in the U.S. But i don´t understand why this country should pay for foreigners . 9 out of 10 will leave the country anyway when they have earned their degrees.

Could you explain how ...?
@Novozymandiaz
@Novozymandiaz 6 лет назад
Anant Relan They "usually" stay here and work since they already have the language skills etc. After 5 years the government usually makes back the money they spent on them. Though I would prefer a small fee for foreign students to shorten the time it needs to pay back the money.

Getting "value for money at a university"? Clearly you must be American. You should go to Germany if you are interested in our culture and languange. Oherwise you will have a hard time intgegrating. It starts already with getting the idea of a university in our society, which obviously you (yes you talking in this video) do not grasp. This applies to all foreign countries of course. Coming here for mere economical reasons and study on our tax money will understanably not make you many German friends and does not make me welcome you.

stop copy+paste the same BS. If you (!!!) have no economical idea, why it helps our economic if we have some foreign students, then please educate yourself.
