For anyone unfamiliar with a standard IFR clearance, it follows the CRAFT method (starting at 3:49): C = Cleared to = BUF (Buffalo Airport) R = Route = Radar vectors, HHOWE 3 departure, BROKK transition, DKK, BUF (destination) A = Altitude = 3000 feet initial, then FL250 10 mins after departure F = Frequency = 132.35 T = Transponder = 5163 The "Q830" route they were talking about beforehand is a published airway; think of it like an interstate with defined on- and off-ramps.

We use CRAFT+V at our Flight school, with the “V” standing for void time since we operate at a non-towered airport. (Basically how long you have to get off the ground and contact ARTCC). It can be as long as 15 minutes and as short as 3 minutes sometimes. Just a little additive to already good info :)

Agree with Jeff r This one was pretty over my head, but for some reason I still think it is cool. I like the analogy, that helps me understand better.

Informative video! What I think would be even better is if you could put up a map on screen showing all of the IFR fixes being discussed and the actual route of the flight plan. That would help to visualize it, especially with the modified routing. Good stuff!

Hi Shaun, I've just subscribed to your most inspirational and informative channel and I thank you. I'm from the UK and 63 yrs old. I'm a driving instructor (car). I never thought for one minute I could ever be able to ask a serious question about safety, regarding pilots. So, here goes. Is there no requirements regarding head restraints on pilots seats. It's just that I noticed there were none on this plane but all other aircraft RU-vid channels pilots aircraft have them. I'm pretty sure your followers and family want you to be safe and keep us informed as you so professionally do. JC

Pontiac has a lot of business jet traffic. The final approach transmitter is 1/4 mile from my house. The aircraft are 800 AGL going over my home. I get to see so many types to include four engine turboprop cargo transports and helicopters. Pontiac is one of the poorest cities in America. It just got out of bankruptcy. They lost their police department which is county run now. Oakland county is of the wealthiest in the country. Pontiac and Flint were magnet cities during the 50s, 60s and 70s. If you wanted a good paying job this was the place. Now, you could not intice any business to move here. An absolute ghost town. Bars are the only businesses that thrive here.

I envision instrument flying like a Venn diagram with three realms; attitude flying, infrastructure, and the human factor. Infrastructure is a loose category that includes everything from the paint patterns on the runway, GPS system, and then paper charts and the FAR/AIM. These are ground school topics you should master before you start flying. It all falls into place, but could be overwhelming when you try to give full attention to all three realms at once.

Shorthand mate. There IS a follow. I think is called CRAFT. It's like a waiter talking your food order Haha. You don't need to write everything, just the identifiers of fixes/vor departures, and altitudes. After a while it kinda becomes a second nature since the format is ALWAYS THE SAME, kinda like food, first appetizers, then entrees, and lastly desert. Hope that makes sense

Great Video... One thing i have always wondered is how you are able to capture/record for your videos you post, all headset communications from Pilot to CoPilot or Aircraft to ATC, or Aircraft to Ground... With having multiple cameras setup in the cockpit, do you connect one to the onboard Comm Systems or connect some type of audio recording device to the Comm Systems??? And if so, what do you use and how do you use it... Have a Great Day an... Thanx for sharing...

I have a question.....I am not a pilot just a lover of aviation and your channel. When looking up at the planes flying over my home (live near an exec airport and an airport) do the lights that we see on the plane have any significance i.e. green and red blinking lights.
@peteralberti
@peteralberti 4 года назад
Yup. The red position light is on the left wingtip and the green one is on the right wingtip. There is also a beacon light on the tail. They don't blink - they are solid. These allow other planes to determine the direction you're heading for see-and-avoid. There are also other lights (anti-collision strobes, landing/taxi lights, etc.) and they all have a specific purpose. In fact, the Federal Aviation Regulations (or FAR's) specify which lights must be used for different situations. Hope this helps.
@UnBoxItwithMaureen

@vonw.3294
@vonw.3294 4 года назад
You try to be wheels up at the time you scheduled your departure when you filed your IFR flight plan. There is a thing called Clearance Void Time. This is when ATC expects you to be airborne by that time. So if you are not able or choose not to depart by the Void time you have to contact ATC within 30 Mins, If you don't then they will dispatch search and rescue operations.

Not answering your question directly but there was a video where a Citation medical flight lost both engines out of Florida due to a weird incident where the Jet Fuel tech but a diesel additive into the Jet fuel by accident and the plane loDt both engines and thus some instrumentation and ended up gliding to an emergency landing in Savannah Ga. They reenacted the incident sort of and went through the processes they followed to get safely down.

Interesting that whoever that was sitting in the plane just past the entrance door got up to hang some clothes up on a hanger in the closet behind the cockpit caused the plane to move just enough to tumble the video cam over. Not sure if he was a passenger, or your copilot just chilling out in back while you do your video thing, I'm thinking not a pilot from the way he was looking towards the cockpit like hes checking it out like I would as a non pilot.
