A bit bittersweet how much exposure tracks like these get right out the gate. Seems like anything relatively upbeat on the contemporary side gets thoroughly depleted due to how rare it is. Reminds me of when that Pharell Williams (sp?) track "Happy" came out and it got wore out by appearing everywhere all at once. At least with this song, I've heard it a hundred times already and still like it.

Never liked chorus after that, but never made the connection that the sound I love is ‘the wrong order.’ John Mayer and this video you did made me realize how perfect that sound suits me. It also has Methane's patented chorus sound, although as an example of chorus I'd go with Jaco. But if they want to go back to the 80s and get chorus rock sound, there are better choices, like Boston's Tom Sholz on "More Than A Feeling" or if you want something more jazz, the Crusaders "Carnival of the Night" with Barry Finnerty on guitar, that has subtle chorus/flange. Or maybe Carlos Rios on Gino Vanelli's Sally. Or how about the Yellowjackets Elamar with Mike Miller. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Iuuhi27pXyg.html all with chorus-like solos. No offense to John Mayer. As pop recording artists go, he's a damn good guitar player, but the 1980s were filled with great guitarists, and people liked hearing guitar solos - a match made in heave. Don't sell people short, just have them listen to the real thing.

@@NiRo_90125 I implied inexperienced, you inferred immaturity. This has less to do with Metheny's gear and more to do with the tone expressed through his hands, and the musicality expressed through his keen melodic sensibility. The idea that a pedal can confer these attributes is musically naive.

The tone on Kimmel is very different from the studio tone. I'm pretty confident that the studio tone IS a Soldano and might even be John's EC Grey Clapton Strat as well. Chorus tone added is TIMELESS and even though people will openly disagree it would be nice to see their boards at home and notice everyone has a chorus pedal. Honestly, it belongs at the front of the board for more reasons than one. It has always sounded amazing, just admit it people!!!!!! LOL

Gents, at the end of the video (Lee) had that tone or just about. Its down to the ear and source that people hear. It needed more volume but that could be where I am or Andertons. Brent.

It's so funny to know that many people on the street - at least in Germany - have probably never heard of John Mayer, seven Grammys or not. And certainly not of something like "tone". And, also funny to know, that if one day John Mayer appears on Anderton's TV together with Lee and Pete, all RU-vid records will be broken. I'm already looking forward to that day.

Same here in young Brazil. Although we do have many who take interest in blues/jazz/clrock, we as music listeners still seem to've been having a luddite moment... No new players seem to be enjoying much recognition, even Brazilian ones. BUT!.. let's give it time, I'm sure we'll come well around this featureless pop in the near future.

Imo he uses more Gain on the Studio Version, which makes it sound like Clapton's solo tone in Pretending. Awesome. Also, there's this wabbling thing ... is it an additional tremolo?

Yeah the studio version definitely has a Soldano somewhere in the chain while Kimmel was just Dumble/Two Rock/Jazz Chorus by the looks of it.

It maybe has a cocked wah too since Knopfler used that sound for Money For Nothing and that's an iconic 80's tone also.

Lee gets a great Clapton tone at the end there. Great video chaps. One thing I thought I heard on the Kimmel version was a sustain pedal of some sort? Thoughts?

I still have my Boss CE-2 chorus pedal which I bought in 1978; it still works but is a bit hissy now. Must get it renovated one day.

During an interview with Andy Cohen, John Mayer said performing for his Sob Rock tour was like being a helicopter pilot- where the pedals and effects are like the knobs and switches a pilot has to keep track of After seeing how much effort you went through to replicate just ONE song’s tone, I believe that

That little wing chorus pedal is so good, sounds the best in my opinion and was surprised it wasn't higher up in the chorus shootout possibly thr best chorus pedal atm

As many have stated, it’s very August/Journeyman Clapton. I can get very close with my ‘91 strat Plus with Lace sensors. I presume what EC was using in his signature guitar back then?
