How to Get Killer Harmonica Groove (Using a Metronome)

The biggest difference between a killer musician and a hack is the ability to groove. Knowing all the scales and riffs in the world does you no good if you don’t know how to put them “in the pocket.”
The key to developing a good sense of time is to play often with some kind of rhythmic accountability. This can be achieved in 3 ways:
1️ Best of all, play with other musicians who have a great sense of time
2️ If you can’t do that, play with great records or jam tracks
3️ Play with a metronome

Hey Luke, I agree that rhythm/groove is the most important thing for any musician. Your suggestions are right on the money! When I started in middle school (the year I bought my first Marine Band), I wanted to join the school band, but all the spots for brass and woodwinds were taken (and harmonica was not included ;-) ). The only slots left were in the percussion section, so I joined. We spent the first half a year learning to count and keep the beat. That has helped me with every other instrument I ever learned, in particular the guitar and the harmonica (which I have only recently taken up again). I think a lot of folks have the most trouble with the rests - it is so tempting to try to fill the "empty" space. This is something I observe time and again when young musicians join our church band. If - as you say - they are able to jam and perform with other musicians who have a great sense of time, then they tend to pick this up pretty quickly, which is why it is important to us to let them perform in the band, even if they aren't quite perfect. But I think I will share your video with them, so that they have a way to work on their rhythm when they are practicing alone.

YES, share it with them! I agree with everything you say here. Church is the best place to learn music, in my opinion, because you're using it for it's highest purpose. The beauty is in the silence in between the notes. Those silences should be the loudest part of the song/groove. 💯 LEE!!! Rock on. 🤘🏼

Love your videos Luke, I'm 56 and picking up the harmonica and the violin at the same time. Never played anything and your teaching style is nice. Thanks!

Hi from UK, love your channel, I’m learning how long blues by EC, there is a magnificent harmonica playing through most of it. Any chance to get a lesson or breakdown. Many thanks H

Hey Howard - is there a link you can send me so that I know the version you're listening to? Most likely it's played by the great Jerry Portnoy.

What confounds me in using a metronome or foot tap is what notes align with a click or foot tap, whether using sheet music or playing from memory. Rhythm is my downfall!

Yes I was the same way. It took me SO LONG to be able to play with a click. You're right, tapping your foot is another good pro tip. Wish I'd included that in the vid!

@@Harmonicacom Hummm. Mayhaps I did not ask my question well. Where does the click fall in reference to the played note or sheet music? Does a click or tap always fall on the first note of a measure? And where does it fall within a measure? Do you have the know-how and willingness to do a video with a few bars of sheet music and a bouncing ball or other highlighting showing where the click falls? I don't have much music vocabulary, so I hope this makes some sense!
