Doc, being an alcoholic I ran a marathon thrice 2017 to 2019, I followed your advice on how the wrong diet and smoking can put more adverse effects on the liver, it helped me a lot, it seriously worked for me, thanks for your knowledge and blessing,, Cheers!! Namaskar 🙏 lots of love from the Indochina peace movement
Love the content and advice you provide here. As a massage therapist i know how much the neck muscles at the base of the scull get tight and have been finding massage in the upper portion of the neck in the evening while running the hot water over the neck really helps with calming the nervous system before bed. Also the temperature change from hot shower to getting cooler while laying in bed helps the body to relax.
Dr. Berg's videos have shown me the truth about a lifestyle for health. Following his teachings , I have lost weight and feel 100% better, have my energy back, and sleep better also. I will be doing this from now on!
Great episode! excerpts NREM sleep is for physical rejuvenation (1st half of sleep), and REM sleep is for mental rejuvenation (2nd half of sleep). How to improve your REM sleep? 1. Relax the muscle around your brainstem 2. Get your breathing balanced 3. Adjust your blanket (not too hot or cold) 4. Increase acetylcholine (vitamin B1/nutritional yeast) 5. Reduce stress - this is the biggest barrier to sleep
I drank a cup of chamomile tea with my magnesium supplement last nigh (l-theronate). I went from 35 min of REM to 1 hour 35 min!!! I’m excited to see if the trend continues
REM sleep cycle sounds like the state you get to in meditation, or lucid dreaming. Has anyone studied the brain activity during daydreaming for activity and what they have in common. Very interesting,, possibly useful for readjusting old patterns willfully.
@immafinna betryna : I think it goes deeper. I adjust an old belief that made me develop the pattern in the first place. ie. I thought people who claimed sugar was bad for me, were overhyping it’s relevance. I now know exactly what it’s doing that is harmful in countless ways. 1) I simply decided to apply the principles of a keto diet in my life to see if they worked as described. 2) I observed the results. 3) I have concluded that it was high carbs that were the root cause of multiple health deficiencies I was experiencing, since they were disappearing one by one. Had I adopted the premise “sugar” was bad for me, I would never have gained all the fore mentioned knowledge in order to present the experiential evidence to others. We move the idea from a rule to a knowing. Hope this helps. ❤️🇨🇦
I haven't been getting more than 15 minutes of REM sleep per night for almost a month now and it's really taking its toll. Im waking up exhausted and angry
Great information about sleeping, especially about relaxing the neck muscles, breathing and adjusting for temperature. Could you please also add what the acronym ‘rem’ means….rapid eye movement. I think it is critical for people to understand this visible sign (not that they will see it when they sleep, mind you :-) ) but there is so much that happens in that stage in repairing the body, healing memories, etc. ‘rem’ is so very generic, but ‘rapid eye movement’ will catch peoples’ attention and hopefully be even more of a motivator to take care of the elements hindering sleep. thanks for all your videos!!
So while the breathing advice is not bad, it's not exactly accurate. If you want to balance your breathing, box breathing is effective: 4 second inhale, 4 second hold, 4 second exhale, 4 second hold. Navy Seals use this method to maintain alertness in high stress situations. In regards to sleep, I would recommend having a slighter longer exhale than your inhale. When your exhales are longer this activates the parasympathetic nervous system and will calm you and prime you for sleep.
Once again, I received an important nugget of info from this video. THANK YOU! Everyone knows about the value of K+, Mag, L-tryptophan, b6, but few people have commented on acetylcholine as you have done. Also, the comment that REM sleep provides mental rejuvenation is important. Cb
please b aware some anti depressants have been found to cause problems like suicide ideation. so many things just get better with diet changes. kinda like a great adventure to find out what is right for you in your diet.
Try magnesium, b vitamins and D3, I swear by vitamin D3 for " feeling happy", get your blood levels checked and see what your vitamin D is. Try and have a routine of some sort, try and do some sort of exercise even if it's just walking, for at least 30mins....walk somewhere you enjoy, in nature, a forest etc...and eat as healthy as you can, it's so important. You can get better but you have to look after yourself the best you can.
Dr Berg your background is too bright and it's sensitively to my eyes are keeping me from watching So I lay down the phone to listen Thank you for this info You're great to the World
Dr berg is a hot blooded man sleeping with a sheet i am more like his wife with the big blanket lol Dr berg is talking about what i learned years ago about meditation and breath control this is my first time back leaving a comment of one of favorite people on youtube since my beautiful mother passed away may 2020 god bless her soul
This is the first I've heard of people having more problems with REM vs SWS "deep sleep". It's the latter that declines with age substantially. Please do one on deep sleep.
Than you dream about things and people whose no longer in your life, having to think about them when you’ve completely blocked them out your life. I think it can end in something bad unfortunately, nothing good comes out of not being able to have a normal sleep schedule
Another cause of nightmares: heart trouble. I don't know why, but arrhythmia caused my grandma many nightmares, but it all went away when her digoxin was adjusted. Another cause is fireworks; I still wake up with nightmare after nightmare for a week or so after any celebration including them. The sound is terrifying, but quickly over. The scent, which lingers causes ongoing issues, because after so many years, even the dirt on the hill where they stage has the stench.
@@mosescordovero8163 check with a cardiologist. Heart problems are very serious. But, often, they're fixable. Maybe not permanently, but treatment often works.
ironically, i saw my cardiologist just yesterday. i found out that my blood pressure is 84 over 39. i never heard of a blood pressure that low, which is all the more remarkable given that I am middle aged and 150 pounds overweight. somehow though, my cardiologist did not find this remarkable, nor did she have me stop taking the medication i take for high blood pressure
@@mosescordovero8163 Um, that's nutty. Low blood pressure, overweight, and a cardiologist that thinks they know. I am still amazed my friend survived when her heartbeat went to nearly 300bpm. They didn't listen to her, because, well, the machine must be wtong... so her husband, a doctor, admitted her, and, funny, wouldn't you know it? The tech they called to quadruple check the machine began screaming about it was real, the lady needed surgery. She made it through surgery... And became a case lesson. If you think there is something wrong, stand your ground. At the very least ask why, and how, and what options exist. You know your body, even when you don't understand it.
Sleep is my biggest challenge. I am too warm, too cold, but mostly my pillow is uncomfortable. I have tried so many pillows trying to find the most comfortable pillow. My best sleep comes when I take a sleeping medication.
Dr. Berg, could you provide links to clinical studies supporting the use of vitamin B1 supplementation and reduction in nightmares? My daughter takes a nightmare medicine, but it has enough side effects that an alternative like this may be more favorable. Many thanks!
Dr Berg is like Mr Rogers for boomers 🤣 and I mean that as a compliment. His presence is soothing, I always learn something and his dry wit delivers some easily missed jokes if you’re not paying attention. If he just had a theme song... 🤔
Thank you for your amazing videos Dr Berg, you are the best of the best!!💖💖💖💖💖💖😇 I have a question regarding vit B1, could you please recommend a good supplement brand?
Looked up sources of B1. The first thing that I saw was liver and eggs - listed under fruits and vegetables. I'm thinking that's not a very reliable source of information if they think those are vegetables? LOL
Foods is really poor in b1 compared to our current needs. Due to stress, all the toxins, ect. Even nutritional yeast is still way too poor. I feel way stronger when I take at least 600mg of b1 daily.
stress is soo terrible it has me going to sleep at 12 then waking up at 3am meaning no detox in my body and even more stress the next day. This is a vicious cycle
New to your videos but they are excellent. I'm in Australia. Wondering about some of your resource suggestions for over here. And still confused about the whole supplement thing....you say some are synthetic but others aren't please direct me to the right sources....undiagnosed me/chronic fatigue syndrome possible adrenal fatigue definitely cortisol ptsd....
TMI alert, but i have come to the realization that one of the major things that both keep me from sleeping at night as well as wake me up prematurely in the middle of the night, is my need to urinate. once i do go urinate, falling back asleep becomes a lot easier, that is, until my body once again compels me to urinate
The B vitamines (especially b vitamin complex) should never be taken too late or it will give you problems sleeping. Does that also count for B1? i Guess most people will take a complex and not a seperated b1 version
I take 100 mg b1 along with magnesium and calcium at night. It doesn't seem to affect sleep negatively. I do take b complex early in the day to keep a balance in, tho.
Hey Dr. Berg! Thanks for all your information!! Is, Polyphasic Sleep like 'Uberman' etc, legit? Where it 'hacks' your NREM sleep cycle - so you drop straight into NREM whenever you have your core 3/4 hour sleep cycle, and also drop straight into NREM with your supplemental 20-30 mins naps too etc?
Another very important thing which helps with sleep is eating a banana as your first meal everyday. Many people don't know this but eating any protein especially meat as your first meal after waking up can reduce sleep quality and your ability to fall asleep. I find it almost impossible to sleep if I haven't eaten a banana as my first meal. Eat the banana and then wait for at least 30 mins and then eat whatever you want!
Good Morning , Dr.Berg 🌞 Thank you so much for sharing this very interesting information with everyone ! Greeting Form : Fort Worth , Texas USA 🇺🇸 7 / 8 / 2021 🇺🇸
This is great. Can you do one for getting more 'Deep Sleep' My sleep app is showing very erratic curves with only about 2 cycles showing movement from REM to Deep or vice versa?
I’ve always been much more of a “morning person,” even as a child. And I’d rather mop the floor of a public restroom with my tongue than have to stay up late. Around 8:30 or 9 p.m., I go to sleep, unless I’m up moving around. I nap until maybe 10 or so, then get up, get ready for bed, maybe read a bit, & finally go to sleep around midnight. I’ve read that such a sleep pattern is more like what people years ago did-before electricity made staying up late the norm. I wake up around 5 or 6, though sometimes I wake up in the night too. Is this super weird? Is it bad for me? It’s really just what my body wants to do.
Before electricity, there was something called First Sleep and Second Sleep. It was common for people to wake up in the middle of the night and stay awake for about 30-90 minutes before falling asleep again.
Dr Berg has videos on waking up at night and on how to solve it. If quality of sleep increases, one needs less sleep and one gets more energy throughout the day.
Great topic. As a matter of fact, we're in a bad sleep epidemic. I've heard that vitamin D level in blood is pivotal, and there's an other important factor of sleep: vitamin B5 from our gut bacteria families. Healthy Sun exposure (no sunburnt) and healthy gut. Panthotenic acid, apple cider vinegar, organic egg-yolks, sunshine. Good to go. Good to sleep. :-)
You're not in a terrible sleep epidemic; you just do not like the fact that you can be saved by not feeding the stress hormone when you wake in the morning, and you won't bath cold water, but you will likely pour that on a plant in the morning to stay green. When humans reject life for the food and medicine they created with their hands, the body won't let you rest.
Um, yes, you are right, of course. They took away our recess, whine our kids are fat and hyper, feed them sugar with a side of corn, and milk, and for good measure, a nice, frosted donut with sprinkles... And then wonder why we all have anemia, vitamin D deficiency, and we have a raging obesity crisis threatening national security. If we can get enough healthy young men to fill the ranks, they end up with a medical discharge from obesity and diabetes from a 4 year term of what should be honorable, but otherwise metabolical syndrome free service! We haven't even gotten into parenting issues, like not teaching kids to take a walk or strap on some rollerskates, or ride a bike.

I need the opposite. A month and a half ago I gave up cannabis smoking and now all I do is dream all night long from start to finish. It's terrible. I wake up feeling like I was busy all night long.

I've been doing a breathing remedy where you inhale for 4, hold for 7, and exhale for 8, for about a couple min or so. Helps me relax as I tend to catch myself exhaling out more quickly than I inhale when I am stressed
