For those interested in the physics behind why pumping works it’s the law of “angular momentum”. Velocity increases when mass moves to the central focus of a curve. Put more simply, the riding technique is “go in small, come out tall” when navigating any curve (up, down or around). I’ve done this instinctively for years as a bowl skateboarder but only recently discovered the physics behind why it works. I’m learning to hit the trails on bikes and your videos are a great help, Ben. 👍

Okay thanks for the videos you helpful boi I’ve just got one question How do you decide where to pump and where to absorb out on the trails or can you do both at the same time?
@BenCathro
@BenCathro 3 года назад
Pumping as what you do to generate speed, combat any hefty compressions and turn sharper. Absorbing is more guiding the bike through the terrain to stop you from getting bucked around. They both utilise the same movements with pumping more focussed on speed and absorbing more focussed on control. You decide what to use and when.

You're killing it with this series ben! So many other videos are sorta wishy-washy about the physics. However, I wish there there slightly more diagrams and/or overlays. There are lots of words and descriptions that are not completely reinforced visually. A subtle knee angle change could be called out with a couple lines, over-layed at the knee with riding footage, with a graph perhaps to show/prove exactly *when* the legs are extended to create that pump, in addition to the verbal description. Still absolutely the best video series about the technical aspects of riding a bike! Something along the lines of the masterful plot of the center of mass of the rider when pumping/absorbing on the trail.

Best tutorial on pumping that I have seen. Pumping never made sense to me until now. Also, I feel vindicated about my self-taught cornering technique that is the same as explained in this video, especially in regard to the forward-to-back weight shift. Until now, I had not heard anybody recommend it. In fact, some say it is poor technique. Screw them - it works and it is FUN.

Hey Ben Super tutorial videos for us oldies. I am on the trails what I would like to see is if your learning a new trail you don’t know where your actually going so you are trying to ride with some pace on a green trail (Beginner trail) which is where there are no real drops just lots of rocks and tree roots bouncing you all over the place how do you know where and when to pump while you have to pedal not coast on a trail. ? It does not mean climb it’s lots of bouncing about on rock and root infested crests. Do you have any videos on pedalling techniques on how to get through these sort of trails. We’re I ride is lots of pee gravel rocks and tree roots. Advice if and when you get time would be appreciated. Other then that great tutorials even if it can be overwhelming keep this great content coming 👍
