I did that with my connect. Used L brackets to slide behind the plastic. Put some of my clothes up there. Works great.

In my transit connect I have bolts along that ceiling behind the seats. When I bought my van a very sturdy/heavy metal barrier was attached there. It's purpose was to keep people from breaking into the back. So, I suspect those bolts are pretty darn sturdy. You could probably support the shelf using those which would probably increase your weight safety margin a bit. Btw, you see where that front plastic shelf connects to the sides with a bolt? In my transit connect I have hand olds there. One side of the hand hold connected where the shelf connects and the other side to that round peg you see in your van. I suspect if you remove that peg you will find a bolt hole. And those are definitely sturdy in my van since that hand hold allows you to pull yourself up and out of the van.

Hey Bruce- I like that nondestructive way of hanging that shelf. Really cool idea with that notch and the para cord thing.

Brilliant idea this and no invasive drilling or fixings needed. Will build one for my Tourneo Connect. Thanks for the inspiration and great idea.

Given some of the roads I have traveled on recently, would try it on some bumpy road wearing a helmet, lol, before hitting the road with it. I have gotten a few unwanted surprises on rough roads, whoa didn't see that one, dang, lol.
@WannaBFree
@WannaBFree 6 лет назад
You may be right and I believe it might need some additional help on the front edge. We'll see how it works and if I have problems with it I'll come up with something to keep it attached. First few rides will be with a helmet, LOL. (That's funny)

Very cool -- like how simple this is. It has strong support, but you didn't need to drill into the van and easy to take down without tools, just pull the paracord away from the screws.

Turned out great Bruce! Very nice to take advantage of that space over the seats. And always nice when you don´t have to drill holes in the van. Great idea! :-)

I found your channel tonight while reading the comments on Camper Van Kevin's video...I suppose you got the message alert about me subbing already! Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching your videos! I, too, am fixing to be full time out on the road again...I say "again" because I spent 38 years as an OTR truck driver/owner operator. Have been retired since 2015 and I'm climbing the walls to get back out there...on MY terms, and, see all the things I couldn't before while looking through the windshield of a truck! Thing is I've always had the nomadic life in my blood, and, I suppose that's why I lasted as long as I did as a trucker! I'll be buying either a new Promaster and have someone build it out for me, or, I'll just buy a new Roadtrek 190. I'm leaning towards the Promaster due to the fact it'll be totally stealth whereas the Roadtrek won't be. Even though the Promaster is nowhere near as pretty as the Chevrolet/Roadtrek I love the idea of the Promaster having plenty of real estate on top for solar and Maxx Air Fans! Besides, a good friend once told me it's only ugly on the 'outside' !! Btw, your idea for fastening the back side of the new shelf was pretty ingenious! All you have to do now with it is make sure you don't beam your head when you're going back and forth to the driver seat! And, for easy reach to the stuff in the rear of the new shelf [and towards the front of the van] just go by a truck stop and purchase a 5th wheel puller...you'll be glad you did! Travel safe, stay happy, love God, and, I'll catch ya' on the next video! (9/27/2018 11:38pmCST Thursday Houston, Texas)

Welcome Jim! Sounds like you have a good plan and are ready to make it happen. My wife and I are considering a Promaster but we will probably wait until next summer to make that jump. We are just trying to make this little Transit Connect work in the time being. We are not full time in the van so I think it's definitely doable as a little get away vehicle and will be great for road trips to see the family. I haven't really heard any negatives about the Promaster and it will be neat to see how Kevin's holds up for him over the course of the winter. Again, welcome to my channel and I hope you find some useful and entertaining videos here on the channel. Take care :)

Super clever hanging system with the brackets and paracord! Did you ever consider a tighter knit netting and just basically having a hammock style gear holder? It could make access to the front of that shelf (original storage area) easier and you could see what you put up there. I would forget where I put that one thing....
@WannaBFree
@WannaBFree 5 лет назад
Now you tell me. That's a good idea but I don't know where you would get a correctly sized netting but I'm sure they are out there. Hope you're doing good :)

Dang Bruce, this may be one of your best designs. You have gained a lot of storage with this shelving unit yet it is not at all permanent.
@WannaBFree
@WannaBFree 5 лет назад
Yes I'm pretty happy with the result. It is not my idea though. I got the idea from other Transit Connect owners but I did want a design that would not require drilling or permanently altering the van and I think this one will work.

Great video brotha! Thanks for giving dimensions, but you said 74 inches long in the video? Do you remember the actual length of this shelf? I want to put one in my connect and was wondering how much wood I’ll need
@WannaBFree
@WannaBFree 3 года назад
Thanks Max! I don't remember the dimensions. I would recommend you just measure your van first so you'll know exactly how much wood you're going to need. Have fun with your project!

He said 74x20 deep incessant but I have a 2010 transit connect and that's way too wide for mine. Like over 6ft. I was hoping to cheat and use his dimensions but I definitely have to measure. Thanks for the video. I was looking for removable stuff since my van has 290k so dont know how long before something major happens like trans. I really needed some light extra storage. My bed is a cot so the under storage isnt as much
