I have been going through my shorts to see their retention and for the most part they fall off the shelf below the 70% like you said BUT I have one video that is still sitting at over 80% and only 35 short views??? RU-vid can be so frustrating. This particular video has over 100% retention if 3 other categories...so maybe that has something to do with it? Just trying to learn all I can in order to make the best shorts.

The 70% things was just something I noticed, 80% retention from the shorts shelf traffic source and not many views is unfortunate, I wonder if it'll get tested again soon?

Woah!! Really good insight! Thanks for taking shorts analytics to the next level. I put in a ton of work into shorts (diff channel) and they do relatively ok - high triple digits views. Lots of work - filming, editing - all niche content. Then I see something that took literally 30 seconds of cat playing with its tail and it gets 100x the amount of views of my shorts! After your video- will try to add more entertainment and more intriguing titles. Thanks again!

Great video! Really awesome break down of all the analytics! I have been making purely long form content up to this point and recently started experimenting with educational shorts. Overall things stagnated for me on long form videos for a period of time and once I started adding some more bite size educational short videos my interactions on the channel have gone up on not only shorts but my other videos as well! Nothing earth shattering but still people seem to be liking it overall. I’m still working on the formula that best works for my channel but I really enjoy giving my viewers short form educational content that doesn’t require a full video and they seem to be enjoying it too.

Hi. Very instructive video. Shorts also exist in artistic domain but the criterias can not be exactly the same. I tried different things like a little piece, or a tuto and it is difficult to analyse why some had very quickly 1000 views (fantastic for my little classical guitar channel ! ) and others do not take off 😥

Been enjoying turning some of my existing popular videos into shorts that do insanely well! My first short got me 500k views and 4K subs! My second one not so well, only 500 views, but my third one hit 200k and got me to 6k subs! Been only uploading them just about once a week and keeping them relayed to my content. Hopefully I can keep my newfound fans entertained!

Thanks for the video! Just a few quick questions and information: My average view time for a particular short is 120%, however, it only stayed “popular” for about 4 hours, and is now only garnering 50 views per day. Any tips?

Great video Ed, I just checked average percentage viewed for my shorts and found it very interesting: 1. Best performing short video gained 2,837 views from short shelf (published 18 days ago) - ave view time of 60% from short shelf. This video this brings 20-30 new views per day. 2. I had a couple of shorts that had some initial traction but have been taken off the shelf (275 views - 30% view time, 258 view - 44% view time) 3. One short video flopped massively on the shelf (10 views from that source ans 12.3% ave view time woohoo!) 4. I posted a couple recently (1 and 2 days ago and one of them hasn't been shown on the short shelf yet). The one posted 2 days ago had 24 views so far and ave view time of 40% so my guess is, I'll be able to 'milk' it for just a little bit longer but it won't go far..

So the one that gets views still, try adjusting the time frame to the last day or two and see what the average is there thats keeping it there, would be interesting to see what's happening to it

I can confirm that my most viewed short never fell under 75% retention on short source, with an avarage total view of 79% from every source.

I’ve had a RU-vid account for years, and my videos rarely got much attention. Last week I had one simple iPhone video blast to over 110k in a matter of days. Another started picking up steam, but nothing like the first. They were both on shorts, but I just want to know why that first video of mine took off out of nowhere. RU-vid is weird

100% there’s potential for niches.....RU-vid has, for its entire existence, perfected the art of serving up content that is relevant to us as an audience..... the only reason it’s struggling to serve us anything other than dancing, dogs or answers to what’s you job, is because there’s a lack of niche content.

Great insights. We've been playing around with RU-vid Shorts and have published 4 short videos so far. One of them gained a little bit of traction and a couple hundred views at a 50% audience retention rate. Have two others that have over 100% audience retention rate, but only a handful of short views (like less than 10). One of these has been sitting for a month now and the other for only a day. The one we posted 24 hours ago has over 100% audience retention in every category, so my hopes are high for it. Wondering if you have ever heard of any short videos that have a very high audience retention, but never gain a ton of traction from the "Short Shelf?"

I make shorts. I'm Vegan and I almost never label my content Vegan because I want people to see it before they make a decision on whether they like something or not. I also learned from one video that had a lot views that it's important to be more general. I agree with you on the title. One of my videos wasn't getting a lot of views and was on the shelf, I changed the title and it made a difference. One thing though, do you think that getting engagement before getting on the shelf gets them on the shelf?

So the issue with general is you don't want to go too general and leave your niche, it needs to still attract the right people otherwise it will just bring viewers to your channel who have no interest in your other videos. id make it obvious that it's vegan, itll help youtube know what you're all about and there's a lot of vegans out there and youtube is about building a community of like minded people, it might mean less views at the start but it'll also mean a fan base builds over time that potentially more interested. With regards to engagement before the shelf, I think its just about the shelf, I don't see why engagement from other traffic sources would impact it, good question though, 🙂

Hey Business Film Booth! In my last short, I got ~500 views, 100%+ Retention, 7 likes and 5 comments in 4.5hrs, then RU-vid removed it from the shelf. I posted it at 11pm EST & it hit the shelf at 6:30am EST the next day. Any guesses as to why it was removed from the shelf? Thoughts on if it will go back? Hi may I ask, my videos are doing fine most of my viewers liked them. I hit 3k subs in 2 months, my last video gained 700k views and 1k subs that was my biggest achievement and I'm aiming for a million views. This video is exactly the opposite of what I've been experiencing and Ive been experimenting for months. I literally labeled a video on my apt account Minecraft and then said subscribe at the end and I got 200 subs and 40k views in an hour and then just stopped. And this isn't the first time I pulled this off.

Uploaded a 30 second short on a separate channelt. Got accepted to shorts. Got one view. Average duration of that one view was 5 times longer than the short. It got one view and hasn't had another one since... go figure.

Can youtube shorts go back on the shelf? My friends video has a 95% attention rate (he got it from under shorts category in analytics). He's convinced that the video was taken off the shelf because his video was blowing up then stop suddenly for 3 hours.

I think we are just too small, have a channel we do highly edited shorts every couple days from our RU-vid content, and they all have incredible retention across all streams and always get above 90% when the shorts feed tests it, but only like 1 in 7-10 hit the shorts feed, they get a few thousand views get crazy high engagement, then drop off after RU-vid no longer cares (retention still at or above 90%). It honestly seems we need to be bigger so RU-vid trusts us a bit more with our shorts content. (Only 58 subs)
