I find the volunteering part tricky because not all people will be in that fortunate position. I am a mature student and an immigrant in the UK. I pay expensive rent in London and support myself while I study. Volunteering has never been an option for me as I don't have that level of support or good financial fortune.

I totally see where you are coming from, sometimes even just a couple of hours a week somewhere can be enough. You obviously have to focus on income at times though.

Hi Fraser- thank you so much for this comprehensive video. I am finishing my Psychology MSc and am working volunteer roles currently. I am still undecided re Counselling or Clinical route- the lines seem blurred and I am interested in both elements of each route. I know funding is a differentiator. Could you pass on any guidance on how they differ or point me to a video? Thank you

Hi Simone, thanks so much for your feedback. We actually have a really popular video on this topic. The difference beetween counselling and clinical psychology is a video on the youtube channel that you can check out. Hope it helps

Hi :) I'm in my final year of my psychology degree, and I'm applying for a doctorate in counselling psychology. Aside from my degree in psychology, I also have a 10-week diploma in HRM and another in counselling psychology. In addition, I'm also working as a volunteer as a telephone support worker for elders who are lonely. I've been working as a healthcare assistant for over 2 years, and I've recently been hired as an HCA for a brain injury rehabilitation center. Based on my education and work experience, do you think I need a master's degree to be accepted into a doctorate in counselling psychology?

Helpful video. I have a question, a lot of people recommend getting a support worker role for experience, but it's not work I'm physically capable of, am I able to gain enough experience through volunteering, and is there anything in particular you reccomed? Thanks.

yeh for sure. Online and telephone counsellor volunteer roles could be ideal. there are even opportunities to do these kind of things from home at times

Hi, thanks for a great video! I am currently doing my undergrad and about to do an AP placement. Does anybody know if being a carer/ senior carer is the same or considered the same as a support worker? I’ve worked for the same care agency for about 4 years and I’m not too sure if I should stick with it or move onto a support worker role or something similar. Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks :)

Hi! What kind of organisations could you reach out to for volunteering as an Assistant Psychologist?

If you have an undergraduate degree in sociology is there no chance of becoming a psychologist?

You’ll need to do a conversion course at MSc level that is accredited by the BPS and enables graduate basis for chartership. This is the most straightforward way to getting on without a BSc in psychology

Great post. Can I ask what your views are on the BPS QcOP as I am finding that doing the doctorate very expensive and mostly full time. The QCoP seems to be the most flexible one.

Hi Stephen, thanks so much for your question. What I would say is that yes, the qcop allows for more flexibility and may help financially but there are a few things to consider. When the route is independent, that means you are entirely in charge of your own learning and meeting BPS standards, which might be very challenging at times. Also, the qcop can at times take in excess of 7 years to gain your full qualification. You also do not gain the Dr title after your qualify from the independent route. You are able to call yourself a counselling psychologist but not a doctor. Just a few things to keep in mind. Hope this was helpful, any other questions then just ask

GetPsyched That's great. Thanks for the info. I am really motivated and this would not be a problem. It is just the logistics of it that I need to get sorted before I take the next step.

Hi Thank you so much for your video! I am currently working towards my counselling undergraduate degree (finishing next June) and I am considering doing a psychology conversion course after to then apply for a counselling psychology doctorate. However, I am worried that because my undergraduate won’t be in psychology that could affect my application to the doctorate. On the other hand by the time I am going to finish the psychology conversion I could apply for an accreditation as a counsellor. Do you think I could have a chance getting a place at a counselling pychology doctorate with this educational background?

If I'm looking to get a doctorate in school psychology, is the PhD or PsyD a better option? I have heard a PhD is more research based and a PsyD is more practice based. I am looking to work/teach at the university or CC level :)
