This video demonstrates the "And-Up!" technique I developed for people living with Parkinson's Disease. This technique, when learned and practices, will help many rise from a chair to a standing position without assistance and without using their arms. Enjoy but proceed with caution.

Great helpful video But I had to pause the presentation when he referred the butt with an old school name. Not a fanny but a RUMP. LOL. I've been using his method for rising from a chair or the floor. Only difference is that I don't say "and up". I say "OOOF TA". LOL

I'll have to review the vide. I don't remember using the word RUMP. But I'm from the midwest so maybe I did! LOL

Great technique. Looks effortless in the students on video. Do you have a video for sitting down safely? You mention that a heavy sitting style can hurt the hips and spine. Would be good to know if there is a technique for sitting back down. Thanks for posting

The trick for sitting is going as if to squat, but fail because your derriere meets the chair half way down. People who think of sitting usually collapse themselves on the way down and essential fall. Where as those who are squatting will stay present and in control all the way. www.alexander-technique.london/2017/03/23/don-t-sit-down-squat/

What about client with forward falling posture or retrograde?

This technique should work for those conditions as well as long as it's not too severe. Obviously if posture is forward and poor a walker might be something to consider. If balance deficits are present, more care and attention must be implemented. This technique is for those with minor symptoms and minor weakness.

Possibly place a chair or a table in front of the patient as they are seated. Ensure the surface is stable so that they may place their palms upon it so they can lift themselves up. Perhaps you can progress this treatment by standing in front of you and using your palms as a surface, or maybe stand beside them guarding their knees ready to catch them as they attempt to stand up. They can even stand up halfway, then sit back down, (half squat) if they are too weak or hesitant to do a full stand.

My mom has atypical parkinsonism and I would like to try this with her but I'm worried that when she leans forward she might fall forward.

So the trick to get up from the chair is to get up from the chair? this didn't work with my mom and I imagine our body's instinct is to try to do this anyways. I really like some of the other exercises
