Larder beetles are small, ovular beetles. They grow to be about ⅓ to ½ of an inch in length. They are dark brown or black in color, with a tan six-spotted band that runs across the middle of the body.
As larvae, they have hairy, color-banded bodies with contrasting colors, usually white or a light brown with a dark brown.
Adult larder beetles can overwinter inside structures, but most people who experience larder beetle infestations may notice them from late May through to June. Larder beetles invading at this time are looking for suitable locations to lay their eggs. Larder beetles prefer to lay their eggs on top of their food sources, such as meats, carcasses, or even pet food.
When looking for larder beetles, you’ll want to look through your pantry, kitchen, and anywhere else you store food, like the garage. Look through storage areas like the attic or basement and check any furs, leathers, rugs, and clothing for any small holes, as larder beetles and their larvae could eat through those materials as well. Also be on the lookout for any decaying rodents or other animal carcasses, as those are huge food sources for larder beetles.
To get rid of larder beetles and larder beetle larvae, you’ll need to start with an initial cleanup of any infested food products, clothing, or other items that may have been damaged.
First, clear out your pantry. Start by throwing out infested foodstuffs. Once those foods are tossed, proceed to remove and set aside everything else.
Next, vacuum all cracks and crevices in your pantry shelving. If your shelving is adjustable, clean out the peg holes with a toothpick and vacuum. Wipe down the pantry shelves with water to clean up any food residue. Do not use any strong cleaners or bleach.
Next, wash all fabrics with detergent, then dry them on high heat. The heat will kill any beetles, larvae, or eggs on these items. Be sure to wash clothes, bedding, towels, and other fabrics. If you have anything that can’t be washed, like silk, place them directly in the dryer.
If you’ve come across any dead insects or other dead animal carcasses, properly remove them, then proceed to clean and sterilize the site.
Once you’ve cleaned your clothes, pantry, and other sites, you’ll need to use an insecticide that’s labeled to treat larder beetles. We recommend you use a liquid concentrate made with bifenthrin, like Reclaim IT. Reclaim IT can be applied to an area once and it controls pests for up to 90 days. Plus, areas treated with Reclaim are safe for people and pets to pass through once the product’s application has completely dried.
To treat indoor spaces with this product, you’ll apply the product as a crack & crevice treatment with a mix rate of 1 fluid ounce per 1 gallon of water. This will be enough mixed solution to treat up to 1,000 square feet of the treatment area.
Spray the solution in the areas where you found larder beetle activity. Treat cracks and crevices around your pantry shelving, along baseboards, closets, around bookshelves, and other active areas where larder beetles and their larvae have been.
Since larder beetles invade structures from the outside, exclusion methods are the best way to keep insects out of your home. Use caulk and copper mesh inside & outside your structure’s perimeter to seal cracks, crevices, openings, and entryways.
Ensure that all newly stored foods are transferred from their cardboard or plastic packaging to glass or plastic airtight containers. This includes any pet food. By storing loose foods
Finally, in addition to treating the indoors with Reclaim IT, you can also create an insecticidal barrier around the outside of your home to further stop insects from invading. With Reclaim’s 90-day residual, you can reapply the product once every 3 months to keep larder beetles away throughout the year.

I currently have these in my home and information about them can be tricky to find when you don't know what you're dealing with. Thank you this video has been very helpful, now I got bugs to kill.

I found them in my books. Several books that were originally in the living room. We read in a big chair by the window where my cat convalesced in March/April. I fed him there and I am sure that his treats are still here and there. But they had infested my BOOKS. One adult had crawled over to the window. One book had at least four beetles and seemed to have no end of larvae coming out if their little tunnels. The books I have found look like someone spilled Coke on them 🤮.

I have found 4 so far and have been collecting them in a yogurt container. I have been feeding them a peanut and pieces of banana and broccoli. I just watched one try and fly but it failed to get air. I didn’t know they could fly. I need to put a mesh on top now.

the larva and egg states are the worst, the larvaes are quite fast and disgusting and the eggs are hard to spot.

Everywhere I've looked says these don't bite humans, but I was definitely bitten tonight, and it even drew blood like a little pin prick. It actually hurt quite a bit too. I was just lying in bed listening to Audible and drifting off to sleep when I felt a nasty pinch. I reached my hand down and felt that there was actually something there so I jumped out of bed and it was one of these.

I remember when I lived in Finland, two of our houses used to be full of these nasty creatures! These things are impossible to get rid of. Then when we moved to southern Sweden we did not see them at all, probably devoured by all the big scary House Spiders that we didnt have up in Finland.

They even dig into metal! I do hate them, they come from the ventilation, floor molding even lurks out in the stairwell. They've been in shoes (hitchhiked on a sock to another home), on glasses recently used, everywhere! Came into the complex through a grainhorder neighbor whom thinks vacuuming is the solution... Rest of neighbors don't care so I've decided to move. Have to freeze things, package them without touching home surface and hope for the best. Loads of disinformation, as for heat I've red that 105 Celsius is the only guarantee. Hope freezing for -20 Celsius for 14 days does the trick else all is lost. Freezing seems to be the only option, cannot burn or boil everything :(

I just learned diatanatious earth kills bugs including spiders. I know you have to be careful not to breathe it in, but a small poof along the baseboards should work. And other areas too? Not sure, you'll have to decide. Apparently it gets all over them and they carry it back to their nest. The product dries them out and, ta da, problem solved! Please study up on it before you buy it tho, so you know how to use it safely, especially with your kitty. The only kind available to me is food grade, so no poison. Mine is on order now, and I'll use it right away! PS I know it's been quite a while since you posted, but I wanted to share in case you're still battling them!!

I live in Alaska, and I have these in my apartment, which i live in an apartment complex. Other neighbors have these within their homes as well. I believe that the entire building is infested. The property managers think I am nuts and think I am stupid and don’t know what I’m talking about. I am having a hard time trying to figure out where exactly these bugs are most active in? I’ve seen these beetles throughout my apartment in almost every room, including bathrooms, hallway, etc. I have moved everything into plastic bags, plastic containers, and glass containers that are sealed tight. My state does not allow me to purchase Reclaim I/T. What else may I use to spray on the cracks and cervices of my home? What other beetle or bug pesticides do you recommend? I have a a 1 year old. I need help please!

Mine hang around edges of carpeting (especially stairs) installed right before I bought my home. The numbers have decreased year over year as we have picked adults, larvae (check under appliances) and ran a dehumidifier all summer.

I live in AK too, up here these bugs are much more troublesome and bite humans, contrary to what is being written about them. (I thought I had bed bugs) these little f@ckers flying around at night and thought I was their dinner. I declared war and took weeks off from working to eradicate the enemy insects. I figured out that they lived on the bottom of the exterior walls where moisture condensates.if you have high humidity. They bored into the insulfoam insulation that was used to seal up between the floor and wall, and had there nests there. I got rid of them by removing all carpets, caulking and sealing all cracks, spackling acrylic tile adhesive over all insulfoam and painting all floors sealing all cracks between the plywood. I finally got rid of them and can peacefully sleep again.

Hi I’m in London,Uk & have been battling these for over 6years, they were in the property already (it’s a Victorian townhouse) ie the crack n glaze plaster system failed a long time ago and inside the wall cavaties is horsehair;BINGO; instant protein for which beetles love , well to cut a very long story short, I love found SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES of beetles in ALL the rooms in the house, so I would advise you to buy some spray bottles and experiment with all the ingredients I’m about to list, to your own preference for scent; Insects hate Alcohol from pharmacist, white vinegar, dish soap, peppermint oil, cedar oil,NEEM oil, orange or lemon oil. This works nicely. Unfortunately I have an Empty house next door which has sat unused for over 10 years and my property and attic is connected to the empty house. Also my landlord has failed to replace my rotten windows and I have massive cracks and holes in the rendering outside and leaks and mould and shoddy heating system and holes in the attic so it’s not surprising that I can’t get rid of these bugs long term. They live in all the rotten wooden windows, plus the neighbours below me refuse to give access to the builders so the works have been stalled. I also have been diligent with keeping my home clean and clutter free and all our clothes in plastic clothing storage bags Goodluck!!❤

Also I spent a small fortune on bug sprays, treatments and caulk and poly filler and new furniture and flooring and clothing and bedding, even paid £200 to a pest control “expert “ NONE of it worked and I had 1yr old twins and a 4yr old & my partner had just died suddenly and no single person helped me, I had to figure it out myself and b4 u waste all your money, please try and make your own, as you could maybe leave out the dish soap, but you apply it when you’re 1yr old is asleep &do it behind things &under things especially where you have seen them and where you know they nest, doorframes, windows, skirtings, taps, undersink, under furniture legs, in shoes, in boxes and cereals and cupboards and under flooring
