I'm 33 and just got back into skating. Remembering cleaning my bearings religiously and how much I don't wanna do that now, I decided to go a different route and I only use sealed bearings. I love riding over patches of dirt or grass and really don't want to risk it. I've seen some pretty decent metal shielded bearings that aren't considered 'sealed' but they kinda are [to debris, just not water or slush]. Once you start popping the shields out and messing up the rubber the protection lessens than when they were new, and it's not the same. Some sealed bearings are better than others, the last ones I bought were diamond hella fast bearings and they feel great! They were 10 for the normal and the 20 for the better ones so it wasn't like a $200 purchase either. Not reusable, but neither are reds and some people don't bother to clean them before just getting new ones. Also, old trucks you find in a shed could be revived with a cleanup and some new bushings, unless they're like grinded down to the axle or something. I built my backup board around an old set of indys like that, I put thunder medium bushings in it and it's good! Some guys in countries where boards are scarce will also use wood glue and sawdust on the tail to make it last longer from razor tail. The obvious one for me is all the shoes we kinda go through. But not everyone goes through a pair a month. I rotate a bunch of shoes, even though I usually end up wearing the same ones the majority of the time. In 4 months, I've nearly fried at least two pairs of shoes. One being a pair of canvas nike chron and the other which is worse for the planet arguably, the always comfy suede accels (both with tons of shoe goo spread thinly with an ice cube). I also swap and re-use insoles by default, but never double insoles or you lose boardfeel. I have some nike sb slip-ons (the verano's?) that are made of this burlap like material, and those shoes just refuse to take damage. The downside is that until they were a little bit broken-in the first few sessions were rough on the top of my foot.
One thing I started doing in the ‘90s was skating bigger wheels like 56-60. They roll faster, better on rougher ground, and last a long time before they get too small. I repair chips when I can, I’ve posted a couple videos doing so. A lot of things that are more about being frugal or stretching a dollar, but also help with reducing consumption. I’ve thought about making risers out of broken decks, but haven’t actually tried it yet. I just try to take care of my stuff so it lasts, don’t throw or focus boards, don’t leave outside or ride in the rain. I have a parts bin with 30 years of misc stuff, at least 2 or 3 sets of 3 wheels that have lost their mates, but usable stuff too. I like the idea of gifting stuff to kids at skatepark with beat up gear or whatever, paying it forward
i need to throw my shoes away because they smell like a bum pissed on them. i may have used shoe goo to make them last longer, but by now i've worn them so long and put them back together so many times that it's actually how bad they smell is why i need to trash them, not because of how shredded they are. looking forward to hitting axle on my trucks. shoes & trucks are the two things i definitely get my money's worth on.
Hey I know you were against it, but could you please consider doing mmore trick history documentaries? I know you got in trouble with skate footage, but if you could really try to find some that is not going to be a problem, I'd love to see more of those. Some of the trick histories you did later were much less engaging because you didn't have much footage and only text posts and e-mails, which are necessary, but the video really needs some old footage. The primo and hardflip vid were my favorite 2 videos, I was instantly sucked in and watched the whole thing, I rewatch them every month because they're so good. Now that there are no questions left, I hope you'd consider.
Truck baseblates are always good to hold on to, someone may break a kingpin and theyre usually interchangeable. I like board graphics so I usually hang them but if theres a deck I really didnt like the feel of ill gift it to someone else. I never really worried about the sustainability thing or the reducing consumption part. I scooped up 10 skatewarehouse decks ranging from 8-8.75 to give out at the park if someone needed a board. They came out to be like $10 a piece shipped w jessup grip included during a sale. I think a quick adhesive cut to shape sole repair kit for shoes would be cool for the sustainability part. But suede lasts much longer, is it any better to buy canvas if youre burning through them so much faster? Youre pitching the soles and all in the end
Hey RadRat, maybe my message didnt reach you but I also had a question about the environmental issue. Almost (or DSM) came out with SuperSap-Decks. The epoxy resin is less harmful than normal epoxy resin, which is toxic. It has been used in boat construction - so its nothing new. What do you think is the next step to make boards more eco-friendly?
You can turn bearings into rings. As long as you have the right sized finger. And are cool with a boring ring lol It’s what I based by wedding ring off of. Got a ring that looked the most like a bearing, just the right size for my finger haha
i think there are 2 ways to help the environment in terms of our deck usage. either we make them longer lasting (which almost always means less eco-friendly materials, like almost impact decks for example), or we start using compostable grip tape adhesive, wood glue, and graphic ink, so you could literally bury your boards when theyre too worn out. i like the 2nd way more in theory, but i think effectively, it would just turn into people using up boards faster and buying more of them. also, i think truck companies could easily take used trucks, separate the steel axles from the aluminum, and then just melt the aluminum into new trucks. if someone could invent a machine to easily do the separating, it might catch on
I never thought that I might be contributing to climate change just by disposing of my old Ventures but now that you mention it I literally just can't stand myself.
Compared to other hobbies out there, Skateboarding is not very wasteful. Golf takes quite a toll on the planet, car racing is not even in the same range. Popular hobbies like fishing, are also very wasteful if you consider the boats and such. I'm not worried at all about my planet impact by skateboarding. I believe most trucks are built of aluminum, so you could always melt those and recycle that metal.
been following your channel forever so no hate - but just for people to have context - India produces 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste every day. so whatever you do to your board or parts literally makes no difference. donating to kids is always a good choice.
With a push for sustainability in footwear and vegans looking for non-animal product shoes, do you think synthetic materials will ever be as durable as animal suedes and leathers? I ask because a certain skate shoe brand (Cariuma) claims their synthetic suede is 3X more resistant than animal suede... And I find that hard to believe at this point, I have yet to try them.
