Now that you have all your tools and materials ready, let's get rid of that awful smell...
Step 1: Identify the source of the smell
This step is crucial because it allows you to focus your efforts on the specific areas where the rats are urinating, rather than treating the entire space.
To identify the source of the smell, you will need to inspect your home or office for signs of rat activity. Rats typically leave droppings, gnaw marks, and urine stains in areas where they are active. Look for these signs in attics, crawl spaces, basements, and other areas where rats may be able to enter your home. Pay special attention to areas that are dark and damp, as rats prefer these types of environments.
Once you have identified the source of the smell, you can then focus your efforts on cleaning and sanitizing that specific area. This will not only help to remove the smell, but it will also help to prevent the rats from returning to that location.
When inspecting for rat droppings, gnaw marks, and urine stains it is important to wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from bacteria and other contaminants that may be present in the urine.
Step 2: Clean up the urine
Cleaning up removes not just the urine, but also other contaminants. Furthermore, it helps to reduce the smell.
A solution of water and white vinegar is a good option for cleaning up rat urine. The acidity of the vinegar helps to break down and neutralize the urine, while the water helps to rinse away any remaining contaminants.
Before you start cleaning, wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from bacteria and other contaminants that may be present in the urine.
When cleaning up the urine, it's important to work from the perimeter of the area towards the center. This is to avoid spreading the urine further. Start by dampening the area with a mop or sponge, then apply the cleaning solution. Use a scrub brush to agitate the solution and break up any dried urine or stains. Rinse the area thoroughly with water, and wring out the mop or sponge frequently to remove as much urine as possible.
Step 3: Disinfect the area
After cleaning, it is time to disinfect the area. This step is important because it helps to kill any bacteria or other microorganisms that may be present in the urine, which will help reduce the risk of infection and further reduce the smell.
A solution of water and bleach is a good option for disinfecting the area. The ratio should be one part bleach to ten parts water.
When disinfecting the area, follow the same process as cleaning the area. The only difference is that after agitating the solution, allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes, then rinse the area thoroughly with water.
Don’t forget to wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from the bleach solution.
Furthermore, make sure that the room is well-ventilated and avoid mixing bleach with other cleaning products as doing so can release some dangerous gases.
Step 4: Dry the area
This removes any remaining moisture from the area, which will help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, and further prevent the smell from returning.
To dry the area, you can use fans or a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) dehumidifier. You can place fans in the area to blow air over the surfaces and help evaporate any remaining moisture.
A dehumidifier can be used to remove moisture from the air, which can help to dry the area more quickly. To use a dehumidifier, place the dehumidifier in the affected area, turn it on, and then set it to the appropriate humidity level for the room. It is recommended to keep the humidity level between 30-50% to prevent mold growth.
It's important to run the fans or dehumidifier until the area is completely dry. This may take several hours or even days, depending on the humidity level and the size of the area. It's also important to check the area regularly

Same problem, first it was in a little shed. The rats chewed thru the metal and ate all the seeds. We found it in the spring and a huge bathroom they left behind. We fixed that up. Now they moved under the sunroom that is enclosed, but it is just ground below. The smell is now coming into the sunroom and it is not good. Since it is on the ground what can be done. I was thinking maybe we could open a panel of the siding and spray with the products you suggested. can't clean the ground under (we are in our 70's). Any ideas?

It sounds like you're dealing with a challenging situation. Given the constraints you've mentioned, there are a few possible approaches to mitigate the rat urine smell under your sunroom. Please make sure to take care of your health and safety first, and if possible, seek help from someone who could assist you. Extermination: If you haven't done this already, consider getting professional help to exterminate the rats. Make sure that the professional also seal any points of entry after the extermination. Ventilation: Improve ventilation as much as possible. Use fans to direct the air outside or toward open windows or doors. Although this won't eliminate the smell, it could help dilute it. Odor Neutralization: You could try to reach the affected area by opening a panel of the siding, as you suggested, and spraying odor-neutralizing products there. Products such as white vinegar, baking soda, or enzymatic cleaners might be useful. You can also consider using a garden sprayer or similar tool to reach under the sunroom. Air Purifiers: If the smell has seeped into the sunroom, using a HEPA air purifier can help clean the air inside. Activated Charcoal: Placing bags of activated charcoal under the sunroom can help absorb the smell over time. Charcoal is a natural odor absorber. Professional Cleaning Service: As you mentioned you're in your 70's, it might be worth considering hiring a professional cleaning service that specializes in biohazard or pest-related cleaning. They would have the right equipment and expertise to handle this sort of problem. Seal the Ground: If the smell persists, you might want to consider sealing the ground beneath the sunroom with a layer of concrete or a plastic vapor barrier to prevent the smell from seeping up. This is a more drastic measure, but it could help if the smell is severe and persistent. As always, these are suggestions, and it's best to consult with a local professional to understand the best way forward.
