Thank you doctor for this video. I have tried almost everything to look younger + delay aging as much as possible, anything from face exercises, vitamin C serum, Fraxel, collagen supplements and of course Retin A (7 years straight), home devices and what not. However, nothing made any real difference compared to the high-quality derma pen I purchased for around 100 bucks. Within 3 months of use, my skin has improved DRAMATICALLY. I don't look like I'm 18 again, but definitely not 44 either. My fine lines have disappeared completely, and my nasolabial folds are way less are nonexist (Never had jowls though). People often underestimate the power of wounding and the revolutionary effects it can have on the skin.
Shhhh...don't tell everyone! (Joking) Ive been microneedling for almost 10 years - most guess I'm @ 15 YEARS younger than my birth certificate says. I DO it myself at home, quote aggressively in places, and lightly in others,,maybe 1x month. I am 63
+1 for kora beauticaIs. I've been doing microneedling since it started 12 or so years ago. Nobody believe I am 55. They all say I am in my 30's or early 40's. As you know, as we get old, our skin gets thinner therefore creating wrinkles. But the wounding kept my skin still thick and youthful. Your comment will help so many women to restore their skin..
So true. My dad died at the age of 42. I NEVER saw him sick a day in my 18 year old life. He had a massive heart attack. We were able to bring him home from ICU, but he died 2 weeks later after another heart attack.
@jmc8076 it's not getting older. It's the effects that it has on your face and body that make it awful. Who wants to look like a shrivelled up, old, wrinkled prune? That's the only option unless you get surgery!
Same, maybe it's because I don't have lines (oily skin) but sagging jowls seems so much worse, they change your entire face shape and make you look sad/angry all the time as your mouth points downwards :/ Already experiencing some sagging at 39
Same here. Forehead lines can be addressed relatively inexpensively with botox or bangs. Patients don't complain as much about their jowls because they believe the treatment will be hard & expensive.
To be honest what really helped my jowls was lifting heavy weights at the gym. Especially upper body work outs. I shredded fat and my face became more contoured and even improved double chin. Nobody talks about that. I think when you lift heavy you automatically clench your jaw so thats why it helps.
I 100% agree. I'm 42 so I still feel fairly young, but its actually pretty incredible how lifting heavy has made not only my body but my face look younger.
I am 50. If I cut my refined carbs and stay away from alcohol, my face is dramatically less puffy and jowls are less noticeable. Daily lymphatic and face massage is also helpful.
Oh, just wait until you ladies hit 52. That's the big one. My facial aging in my 20s, 30s, and 40s was honestly kinda cool and empowering (and also largely dealwithable with makeup, at-home devices, etc.). But holy shitballs, the 52 year old jump-scare in the mirror is insaaaane. Menopause is no joke.
Thank you for heads up! I have another 6 months before I reach that age. Are you happy now? Do you do your best to maintain your routines? What have you been going?
@@gategirl66 Have you spoken to your doctor about it? I’m asking because I also wonder if we’re lacking getting enough nutrients that may be speeding up the aging process. Do you do anything else, like those facial massages?
I have jowls & my mother did as well. I asked a cosmetic surgeon what he could do to help me with Botox & fillers at age 66 - he told me that ship had sailed…only surgery would help!! 🤨 I’m 72 now & I just concentrate on my skin and keeping it looking as good as possible. It is, what it is. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
I’m 72 yrs old also! Ditto for mommy having jowls too! I’m just trying to be the best I can be! Thanks to my daughter who buys me Boxycharm each month and also Ulta gift certificates on special occasions, and my late youngest son, who I lost suddenly November 11, 2023, bought me a yearly subscription to Ipsy glambag . I am a lucky Mom, I’d give it all up in a heartbeat to see my boy one more time!💔❤️🩹🙏🏻
I am so sorry for your loss😢 I am 59, I just keep telling myself...I might be getting older but I am happy with the person I am and my life. Sorry about your son, our kids are not ment to go before we do 💙 @@cathygiuliana9089
My mother used to do facial exercises when I was a little girl in the 70s. My little brother and I used to crack up watching her. But let me tell you she looked great for her age
I did not notice much change before the age of fifty. Everybody always thought I was 15 years younger than I was. Then after fifty it went south realy quickly.
@@PrototypeM Yes so rude. My mom started hormones at 48 and she's been on them for 10 years so her face still looks quite youthful but I hate how hormones make me feel so not sure I want to go that route.
@@joanna0988 oh , I have been on oral estradiol pill and progesterone oral and Thanks to God, it's working well for me. Can you consult with your doctor about oral route, if you are healthy and have no history of blood clots, in my opinion it's the best form of HRT
I’m in my mid 50’s I have Jowls. I have accepted and embraced aging and I couldn’t be happier. Also, what other people think of me is none of my business which makes me even happier 😊
I heard that post-menopausal women are more empathetic and less sensitive to negative emotions. So I am looking forward to not caring so much about this kind of thing. It sounds like you're there 😊
I wish aging was praised, that the jowls, wrinkles and crepey skin was something the young envied and looked forward to. Why aren’t we celebrating aging? It’s literally a privilege and not all get to experience these changes. Wouldn’t the world and life as women be so much less stressful if we weren’t always battling our own bodies? Sign. Just makes me sad inside.
Ok do it on your own what is the problem? Ofc it is privilage to get older, but why others have to like looks they dont want? Do whatewar u want and dont bother others......
Nobody is saying YOU can’t celebrate getting old….There are different ways of celebrating it! I, for instance, like to celebrate my aging with cosmetic treatments. If I can age more gracefully, I will. I just celebrated a big birthday and I did it with ultraform 3 followed by a touch of Botox on my 3 areas! Yay! looking like 35!
Why are you even here if talk about controlling & slowing aging makes you “sad???” Are you a Masochist? There are lots of videos “celebrating” saggy jowls, deep deep wrinkles, droopy eyes & turkey necks & glorious white/dull hair!!!! Have FUN! It’ll bring JOY back into your life!😘
I’m 48 now & I had jowls in my early 40’s. I started using micro current & red, green & blue light therapy. My jowls went away!!! You have learned so much about skin care from you!!
You are NOT lying! This legit is what happens ladies!! I just turned 43 and I swear I just looked at myself in the mirror and said who is that!!! Thank you!!! Love ALL of this!!❤❤❤
Ladies, dont underestimate the power of good posture, as well as face yoga. I reduced my double chin and firmed up my jawline drastically by doing that. A lot of us have tight necks with shortening of the platysma muscle that pulls your face down, especially lip corners. Your skin and muscles are very responsive, so dont feel disempowered. The beauty industry fear-momgers a lot. How is it that you can work out your body but from the chin upwards yoi can't? Just as you have to do body exercises properly so you don't hurt yourself, same is true for face exercises. Edited to add: I tried posting more info below but those comments were deleted. I'd add the info here, but then this will probably get deleted, too. Do your own research folks and always have a healthy skepticism of big industries.
Yeah, it's interesting that she poo-poos facial exercise. People swear by it. Maybe because she's selling products? For those wondering just put "facial exercises" or "face yoga" in the search bar. You'll get a ton of results.
This is interesting to hear. I worry that doing facial exercises will strengthen the platysma thus pulling down the face further. Why do facial exercises initiate the opposite?
I’m 58 years old and on a low carb/zero carb diet which helped me got better from my illnesses and stayed healthy . Fasting has helped me tighten my skin.
Ma’am, while I love that for you, there is literally no way that you, an 80 year-old woman could be mistaken for being just a few years older than me. I’ve never seen that. Even the best face lifts cannot provide the plumpness of collagen and how the eyes are set in youth. At your age, your eyes will have receded to an extent. That just looks older and is an indication of being older. I am inspired by your happiness and satisfaction at 80!
Who is your surgeon? Also, good for you. Some people are shamed for getting cosmetic surgery and I think it's perfectly acceptable for ppl to do things that make them feel better. You only get this gift of life once. Don't let anyone else tell you how to live it ❤
My face really began to change when I reached 74. I began to notice both static and dynamic wrinkles. I’m very fortunate as I always took and take good care of my skin. I have always used sunscreen and covered up. I don’t have any discoloration or freckles on my face neck or chest. I grew up in New England, Hawaii and Florida. Ironically I am not a beach goer or sun worshiper. As a child I had some severe sunburns on my back. Consequently I have a lot of freckling. I have noticed some jowls appearing. I consider myself fortunate as I always get questioned about my birthdate. I have to frequently prove my date of birth. My eyes have drooped a bit. But I still have smooth skin on my eyelids. And, very minimal crows feet. My father had beautifully smooth skin. He did have minimal jowls. My mother had jowls but didn’t have obvious wrinkles until her early 90’s. So I believe we do owe a lot to genetics but the biggest thing we can do is wear sun protection.
K2, D3, magnesium complex, boron, and collagen, 2-3 avocados 🥑 daily = tight skin and strong bones and muscle. You must be doing some strength training like swinging a 20 pound kettlebell or more. Age more gracefully without the appearance of heavy jowls. 😅♥️also seamoss. How could I forget that! It makes the skin look and feel so good on its own.
Yep! I’m 57, and I just noticed that I look older/possibly my age. I want to look less tired, when I’m not tired. I should pull out my Nuface I bought when I was 50. 🤦🏾♀️ I need a new cord. 😆
@@helenjoanna49 HRT would definitely help with over all rejuvenation along with quality lifestyle and skin care etc, but the inevitable aging, I.e, laxity, volume loss, sagging it's all considerably gets accelerated post menopause

Would also love to see a video on Marionette lines- would skincare do anything to fix it (perhaps retinoids?)? What are the in-office treatment options, and how successful are they?
OMG YOU SOLVED THE PUZZLE FOR ME‼️‼️‼️‼️ I didn’t start getting them until my anxiety started causing me to bite my cheeks ‼️‼️😭😭😭😭😭😭biting helps distract my mind
It's an all rounded information and genuine of every word. Dr. Idriss was clearly not selling herself but was keenly interested in making aware of the facts of jawls. She's truly a professional and knows what she's speaking.
"You buy your shoes on sale, not your face" 😂 love that. And yes, there are no instant fixes... Thanks to how our current society is structured people really forget that. If we just put in a tiny bit of daily effort, over time, that's actually the most effective. Thanks for all the great vids ❤
I swear mine literally came within a month out of nowhere when I hit 40. Yes I have a “strong” jawline. I’ve always taken good care of my skin with retinoids starting in my 20s, antioxidants, and frequent reapplication of high SPF sunscreen. But I went from looking a decade younger than my actual age to having jowls and frown lines (11s between my eyebrows) when I hit 40. I also hit perimenopause at the same time. My cycle disappeared out of nowhere for half a year. My jaw dropped when my gyno jotted down “perimenopause”. It’s been a rough year. Mother Nature give me a break. She took me from my maiden phase to my crone phase with no gradual transition over years. No it all happened to my skin in a month. 😑 Oh and there’s the Melasma that came out of nowhere too.
@@Nalenja I honestly thought it was supposed to be a gradual transition. Nobody prepared me for this unspoken reality. But props to Dr. Idross for preparing women.
I’m 48 ( 49 in November) and I have aged literally in the last year! I have jowls , it’s genetic but also I’m peri menopausal. I’m beginning to not recognise myself anymore. It’s so rapid that’s what’s scary …. I haven’t had time to prepare and accept it yet . I think il be saving for surgery
It’s such a blessing to be in my mid 20’s and have the internet and hear a doctor talk about what my options will be when I’m older if I want to age a certain way. If I was this age 20 years ago I wouldn’t know all of this and I most definitely wouldn’t be using sunscreen as much as I do. Thank you for all you do Dr. Idriss 💕
Im 60 yrs , hv autoimmune disease, im on prednisolone since 25 yrs n still hv good skin n my Drs said i look 40 yrs, even all who see my ID can't believe im 60. Hv done none of what u r saying. May be it is genetic. Im very health conscious, no alcohol, no cigarettes no fast food n hv a very good husband n children 😀. Be happy 😊
I love your straight to the point honesty! It’s so refreshing especially considering it feels like social media is one big ad trying to sell you something more often than not. Thank you 💖
Having lost 120 lbs (with 68 to 80 lbs more to go), not to mention, being in my mid-60s, I am learning to accept my face and body with all their lumping, sagging and wrinkling. It can be hard sometimes, but I can do so much more in a slimming package now. Luckily, I spoke to a cosmetic surgeon who advised me wait 2 years after maintaining my goal weight before doing any procedures. This makes sense to me because after losing 100 lbs, I had a weight plateau for 9 months. In the past, I would've gone back to overeating and regain all the weight and then some. So I'm giving myself a deadline for health! I will do tape measurements every two weeks. I am scheduled for my first Dexascan on July 3 to measure muscle and body fat. These I will do quarterly and then monthly until February 14. Whatever I weigh then, that's where I'll stay.
Dr. Shereene Idriss - I so love and adore you - you are a beautiful human - always so honest and no hype. Yes I have jowls and I hate them and you explained the issues perfectly - you are just the best. Thank you for always being there for us. God's Blessings to You and Your Family always. Have a wonderful w/e. 😍🤗😘
Oh my gosh! I am 61 years old and my red light led mask is the best and has better results than anything I have ever used. And I have it all. It is unreal the difference it makes. You must have never used them and never looked at the science. I had to rewind to make sure I heard you right. Really surprised. I thought you was a dermatologist?
I noticed my jowls sagging back in 2018. I was 44 and a half. I thought, ''well, aging, what can you do''. Fast forward to now, 2024, at 50 and a half. For different reasons, I went without my usual, daily, huge glass of orange juice, milk chocolate, chips, rice and eggs, for about 2 weeks or so. I was also not sleeping, I got about 4-6 hours most nights. Lo and behold. My jowls? Gone. I am partly reintroducing my usual ''diet'' to see which one is the culprit, but I suspect the sugar and empty calories in the obvious aforementioned. Lack of sleep didn't effect me as much as my diet. So, they were not huge to begin with, but I noticed them, they aged me, I thought, considerably (1mm on the face makes a real difference). I'm not saying this will work for everyone, maybe not even for most. Also, one more thing: I knew a middle-aged woman some years ago that was going through some stressful times. Once the problem was solved and she probably started sleeping better and stopped feeling so stressed she looked about 10 years younger from one week to the next. It was amazing to see.
Cutting the sugar has been a total game changer. I haven't eliminated it completely but have cut it way, way back, and the difference in my skin, hair, and mood is definitely noticeable. 👍
I need to sleep to function well! They say about 1% of the population can get by with 3 to 4 hours of sleep nightly, I can't do that! Most people need 8 hours at least!
To everybody, your jowls are pretty and nice. They make me trust what you have to say and want to ask you about your long and beautiful life. ❤ Thanks for the advice doc!
You lifted my spirits, l always looked 10 yrs younger than my actual age, until about 60 yrs old, l have a heart shaped face , my jawline is narrow and post menopause it really was very pronounced, l've tried everything from creams , to facial devices, scared to put the time in for the devices because of fear of not working, it makes me feel elated and happy to know you see the beauty and feel comfortable talking to us with the jowls, were young at heart , from what people have told me I'm very easy to talk with, thank-you again for lifting my spirits
Great job I learned so much. I’m 70 and I want to learn what I can do with out too much drama and expense. I want to look like a 70 year old woman not a fake face.
Yes, I always thought I looked very bony with my dad’s high cheekbones and jawline. Now, at 65, I feel like it’s probably helping to hold my face up! Thanks, dad!
I think that was one of the most helpful video you’ve ever done! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge with us, it’s truly appreciated. I’m in that early 40’s stage where I don’t recognize myself anymore too and it helps to know I’m not the only one feeling depressed by it ❤
I’m 50 and I definitely notice jowls, more so after losing 70 pounds. But I’ll choose the weight loss over my face 😅. It does bother me though but I won’t do anything invasive (can’t afford anyway), so I just do a short facial massage morning and night and hope for the best. 🙏🏼. I love your videos and I giggle when you talk about young influencers being fetuses 😂. They have no idea what’s coming for them! I certainly didn’t. Trying to just accept my face the way it is, care for my skin and body and mind the best I can and let go of feeling the need to look younger and embrace each stage of life and all that comes with it. 🥰. Oh one thing I am starting to do but it’s very hard, train myself to sleep on my back because I’ve noticed the jowls and nasolabial folds on my right side are more prominent than the left and I suspect that’s due to side sleeping. So maybe that’s something to try as well for anyone wanting to help the jowls situation? 😊
I look just like my paternal grandmother, and she, her two sisters and their mother all had jowls - and I'm well on my way at age 55. I am considering trying the Nuface to see if it might slow things down, but the reality is that I resemble the beautiful women who came before me, and I wouldn't change that for the world!
I love the way you always break it down without sugar coating the facts. You are helping me so much on my ever changing, middle-aged skincare journey ✨️ .
I just did 6 treatments of forma and it has helped tremendously. It was actually really relaxing with zero down time. A month out and still looks great. Will see how long it lasts.
Blows my mind how accurate you are! I'm in my late 30's and literally this last month my double chin saggy neck skin and jowels just appeared! I felt crazy but not now you said this can happen!
What a gift! You are the whole package. Thank you for sharing your super brain in such a pleasant, modest, real deal way. As an aging girlie, I appreciate you.
Nice sign in the back. I laughed a little this morning when I noticed. Have to recognize helpful people. Everyone replay and take a look at the sign behind Dr S to the left. Would love to have you for a boss!
At age 73 I look 20 years younger than I did 3 years ago. I do the facial lymphatic massage in the shower after I've cleaned my face and the facial yoga throughout the day. The only medical procedure that I've done is stem cells for full body strengthening. A happy smile and positive attitude will shape your face as you age. Also Mewing because the palate supports the upper skull and prevents the jaw from sagging.
in the meantime, there are derms and plastic surgeons who have videos, not be mention american board of cosmetic surgery and the american academy of dermatology who have lists of questions to ask a doctor before procedures.
I'm 51, and I started noticing my jowls around 48 😢. I'm trying to cut out bad habits and increase self care until I need fillers... thank you for the info much appreciated 👏 💐
I can say that medicube age-r booster pro changed my skin. I used it for 3-4 months already. The ems and dermashot mode are indeed amazing 😍 but like you said, consistency is the key.
Skin care has come such a long way. I no longer ‘worry’ about wrinkles 🎉 . But jowels are a totally different beast! Just to confirm, is melted fat permanent? Thank you so much for all the wonderful recommendations and comedy 🥰.
Thank you for explaining everything in a way that makes sense and with humor. Could you do a video on around the mouth lines and the alternatives please? Thank you!
About 20 years ago, it was bangs or Botox for me, and I chose bangs! 😂😂😂. Had hysterectomy at 54 and menopause started the neck sagging. Also had thyroid cancer 3 years ago; surgeon did a beautiful job, but neck is now a bit saggy and jowls are noticeable. But I'm 63, so whaddya expect? Bought the Medicube and will give it a try. Thanks so much for the straightforward information. It always so appreciated!
Thank you Dr Shereene! This was a super informative video regarding what we aging older gals can look forward to if we want to beat the clock withe the least amount of pain and downtime. I’d love it if you could do a video about types of chemical peels and the amount of discomfort and healing time goes along with each! I’m a 72 yr old retired RN who used tretinoin nightly since 1985, most times without a sunscreen! I’ve stopped using tretinoin about a year ago. The skincare products from my daughter via Boxycharm are a lot more fun! Thank you again, Dr!, you’re are gorgeous, and brilliant with such a relatable personality! So glad I subbed, it’s a privilege and a pleasure!❤️🌹👏🏼🥰
@@naazkhan9233hi I knew at as HIFU, high intensity frequency ultrasound. It’s can be painful on the forehead, but under the chin I felt nothing. You can see it tighten immediately and then the real results kick in on month 3. I had a Dr do it, but she gave me a family discount of most likely less than what a derm would normally charge. I noticed different offices have different names, I guess they use the machine name.
I got my dad’s jowls. My mom and sisters did not. That said at my mid30’s my face looked GREAT! And I didn’t have any wrinkles. I became obsessed with sunscreen and avoiding the sun by 30 but I’d started wearing sunscreen in my late 20’s. This was the early 80’s so everyone thought I was a freak. In my late 40’s my jowls and turkey neck had started but I only had a few light wrinkles. In my mid50’s I began to do medi stuff including something that was done to my neck that was fab (can’t remember what it was but it was $1800), Botox and very minimal filler. My industry did not want women over 48 to be doing what I was doing. At age 63 I was forced into retirement and stopped Botox and filler. My jowls really came out at 65-66. Then I saw a video about a bunch of microcurrent devices and at 68 I got the mini nuface on a serious Black Friday month sale. I watched all the videos and started using it. It took 5-6 weeks but I started to notice a change in my jowls! In 8-10 weeks there was a change in my neck. Sure I still have jowls but they look like they did when I was 48 so I’m happy. I do it every day but 2 days out of the week. I have less wrinkles on my forehead than my 38 yo niece (who doesn’t wear sunscreen like I was at her age). People accuse me of still using Botox but I do have wrinkles (tho Botox would lessen them)
@@taksimmetre nuface mini I’ve run out of the expensive gel by them. I did buy regular medical gel but someone recommended just using a Korean aloe Vera gel (they get there’s at TJ maxx and I got my first tub there too, second one I got on Amazon but I’ll look for one when I order at Stylevana)

I am focused on saggy jowls because I am starting to develop them NOW 😩. Love your videos, I get so much relevant info and actual solutions (yay!) to my ‘aging’ issues. Thank you for sharing them !
So loved this video! do all the right things, high quality, low fat, high protein plant based diet. Daily sunscreen since 15 due to acne/acne treatment. Vitamin C, learned about Niacinamide from you, retin a, barrier protection, enzymatic gentle peels, glycolic serums. Acne really did a job on my focusing on my skin/face. I am trying self lymphatic massage..seems a good thing for health. It is up to each person and in no way is natural aging not beautiful. Having said that, I had a deep place facelift and a couple little other things last year and I’m very glad I did. Instead of ever having a new car, this was my big buy. For younger people…even I’m 40’s…there are things with small amounts of Sculptura and filler to camouflage the jowls. Since these products can sometimes never fully go away, it’s important to go in informed I want to say to those who are bothered by jowls once there is redundant skin, bone and volume loss and facial muscle and fascia falling down, it’s ok to get surgery if it makes you feel good and more like you feel inside…and those who would never consider surgery and enjoy seeing and experiencing the natural process , you are absolutely beautiful too. I’m a sinker, but eventually I sagged! Thanks Dr for such good reputation. Ulthera is good for people with great volume like you. I truly wouldn’t risk that or Morpheus, if you are a skinny. Yes, must go to a surgeon who knows not to close with tension. I think a facelift can last longer than 10 years, …but we will see!
I’m interested to know why you don’t think that facial exercises are a good thing? I’ve been doing Dr Mandell’s jawline exercises for a while and have seen good results with my jawline looking tighter. Are you thinking it can cause problems long term?? Loved this video, thank you xx
I use microcurrent and RF at home devices, don’t use them over the thyroid, however was wondering if these devices do affect (disrupt) the thyroid ? Also, how often is it safe to use these devices? Thank you
This was the best information ever! I did wake up in my early 40’s and said whoa! Where did these jowls come from! And I talk like that with my bottom teeth showing, and make that face a lot subconsciously! Now I know where to get my Botox!!! Thank you so much!❤
I felt the huge shift between 39 and 42 (now). It's like they just came out from nowhere. I saw a picture of me looking down and I was like, "Noooooooooooo." I'm not averse to a deep plane lift later on... I'm holding out for my 50's, but who knows... I'd be a one and done. I wish I could come to you for any fillers or Botox, because I DONT WANT IT TO LOOK OBVIOUS, but I'm all the way in Texas... Plus, after that study that showed fillers hanging around in some lady's face decades later, I freaked out. It looks like it all just migrated. I may consider going to my mother's derm, since she has made my mom look FANTASTIC, and all the changes were very subtle.
I’m 47 and just this year had that shift that you mentioned happens in your late 20’s and 30’s. Guess I’m lucky, but now I look 5 years older than I am and it’s shocking. I’m blaming it on taking up coffee drinking last year. That shit ages you.
100% agree! Coffee is the worst for skin and bones. I remember Sharon Stone coming out ages ago talking about all of the cysts that were found in her body and when she asked the doctor what caused this, her doctor said coffee was one of the main culprits and told her she needed to stop drinking it immediately 😮
