If bare patches are forming in your lawn, then your grass could be infected with Take-All Root Rot. Take-All Root Rot is a destructive fungal disease that targets warm-season grasses like St. Augustinegrass or Bermudagrass. The pathogen, Gaeumannomyces graminis, can kill grass at the roots. Without roots, entire patches of grass will die and patches of bare soil can take over, followed by weeds and other unwanted plants.
The initial signs of Take-All Root Rot are subtle, so it’s common for other homeowners to dismiss the infection for some other cause. An early symptom may include the leaf blades yellowing, which may be confused for a nutrient deficiency or pest damage. Soon after, however, the grass will turn brown and die off in irregular-shaped patterns. These patches can range from 1 foot in diameter to 20 feet.
Take-All Root Rot is typically found in grass in shaded areas where moisture easily pools, creating an environment that encourages disease development.
This disease causes rot to form on the grass’s stolon and roots. If you pull out a runner, you will see brown or blackened splotches along the stolon. You’ll also see blackened and rotting roots as well when healthy roots should be whiter in color. Grass that is infected with Take-All Root Rot can be pulled from the ground easily with no effort.
In order to treat Take-All Root Rot, we recommend you use a product like Patch Pro. Patch Pro is a propiconazole concentrate that will control many lawn diseases and fungi, including the pathogen causing Take-All Root Rot.
Before any application, calculate the square footage of your treatment area. Use this value to determine how much product to use.
Patch Pro is a concentrate, so it will need to be mixed and applied with water before application. To treat Take-All Root Rot, referred to in the label as Take-All Patch, the application rate is 2 to 4 fluid ounces applied per 1,000 square feet of treatment area. Using a handheld pump sprayer, mix 2 to 4 to fluid ounces of product with enough water to make 1 gallon of solution.
Apply your solution evenly over your treatment area. We recommend you use a fan or cone-shaped spray pattern to ensure the grass blades are evenly coated.
For the best results, make 1 to 2 applications in the fall in September and October or when night temperatures drop to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, then make 1 to 2 more applications in spring in April and May. Be sure to wait 1 to 2 weeks for every 1 fluid ounce applied in-between consecutive applications.
You should see a significant reduction in afflicted turf 2 weeks after your follow-up applications.
