You can get sand in your pool by running your pump on recirculate too. I just set up a new pump and filter and had it running on recirculate instead of filter. Figured this our after several hours and switched it to filter. When I came home from work today the bottom of my pool had sand everywhere. Was wondering why my water was so cloudy yesterday. It was the sand being pumped into the pool. When I went to the booklet that came with the filter under the "Filter media in pool" Section the first listed cause was "Filter on Recirculate"
The same goes for DE filters. Years ago, I had tons of "sand" in my pool no matter how many times I vacuumed. It turned out the flter was broken and had to be repaired.
If you're dealing with a TON of sand, then yes, that could be a risk - as with anything you vacuum in large quantities. But the amount of sand that most people experience should be fine. If you don't have a sand filter, you will need to vacuum with the filter set to "waste."
People, they always say that the sand comes from the filter but they always omit that sometimes, rain brings sand with it. It's a pitty when people buy new filters or try to repair it when they are perfectly fine, is just the rain...
Replaced an old cartridge filter with a new sand pool filter using glass. I’m getting smaller amounts of glass on the filter setting 3-4 ounces and larger amounts immediately after running a backwash / rinse - 2 pounds of glass entering the pool. I vacuumed to a filter sock to see how much media was entering the pool. I’m perplexed it’s brand new, any ideas? Inground pool 18 x 36 pool, Pentair variable speed pump & the filter is a Pentair SD80. The sand seems to enter predominantly on the pump priming or higher speeds and less on reduced filtering rpm’s.
I had a new heater installed and the sand filter was moved and tipped slightly off the base. Now I have sand coming out when I filter. Do you think the lateral or pipe got broken?
I checked each lateral no crack , checked the center hub no crack, its a brand new pump, im still get a little sand , about the size of a pea , whats wrong ?
I have an above ground pool and my sand bags i had inside the pool holding my steps down busted. It became cloudy and I've been using my robot to try and get it up. It's gotten a lot out but there's just a little bit left which I'm about to go try to get out now. It's still pretty cloudy but I can see the bottom. Is this normal to still be so cloudy even when no one has been in it stirring it up? Should I use flock to maybe get it up easier with my robot? It has a very fine basket in the robot for picking up smaller material too. HELP I DON'T WANT IT TO TURN GREEN LOL And yes chemicals are in check.
I live in las vegas, does mustard algae look brown? It looks like I have a lot of dirt in my pool due to the weather around here (it's windy). However, I shock my Intex pool once a week and brush at least every other day. I also run the filter 24/7 (clean the filter every couple of days) and keep it covered with a solar cover when not in use.

I’m having this issue in Vegas too! I live right on the mountain and have no idea if it’s algae or dust/dirt. We’re doing a full drain right now, so frustrating!
I’ve been working on opening my pool for three weeks now, and all my levels are good, EXCEPT for stabilizer, which is always at zero, and the water is completely cloudy. The water isn’t green anymore, but it remains as cloudy today as it did two weeks ago. Does sand swirl around the pool? Or does it settle at the bottom? Does it have something to do with the lack of stabilizer? It’s driving me crazy.

So I opened the filter to change the sand and found that the pvc pipe and the laterals were all cracked in several different places. So I think that explains all the sand in the water. I’ve replaced the parts and bought new sand and am going to start over. 🤞
@@tiffyrh07 It worked for the most part. However I realized the liner had multiple tears in the bottom and was letting in sand that way too. So this year I’m replacing the liner.
