How To Get Scratches Out Of Your Windshield

In this video I show the way I get scratches out of my windshield. There are several different way to do this, however this is the way I found works the best and gives the best results. I use a cleaner wax to polish the scratches so they appear like they are not there. I am not actually removing many of the scratches themselves. Please note that this is not a permanent solution, but a long term one. I do this to my car about once a year. CAUTION be careful about the products you use because can can actually make your windshield worse if you use a product that has abrasion to it.

Hi Daniel. Thank you for posting your video. The windshield on my Mazda was so badly wiper scratched that it was difficult to look through the window if driving into the sun. I did exactly what you showed in the video and it took out 98% of the scratches. Saved me having to replace my windshield. You rock!

Hey Dan, wanted to give you and your viewers some pointers. I noticed a few things that you should avoid next time, to achieve greater results. If we're making informational tutorials, lets make sure we're doing it safely and sharing proper information. 1. never use a "rag" anywhere on your vehicle. Only use microfiber towels. 2. Never lay your buffer "pad side down" you just picked up debris from your wooden outside furniture onto the pad and that will now contaminate your clean zone. 3. You're using a paste wax with a machine. this product was not designed to be applied with a machine. you should be using liquid. 4. you're using way to much product. only a micro film of wax is left behind, so why cake it on? 5. never use ammonia based cleaner on your vehicle. Unfortunately, this whole method is improper. you skipped many critical steps and jumped right to step 99. you have the right idea, but this method will give you permanent results. 1. mist the windshield with an ammonia free cleaner and clean glass with a razor tool, to remove any bugs, sap, tar, ect. 2. clay the glass with glass clay to pull contaminates from the pores of your glass. Dry glass with microfiber towel. 3. using a DA polisher, prep a microfiber cutting disk with a heavy cut compound (M105, or M101). 4. working a 2x2 section at a time, run the polisher in a cross-hatch pattern 2-3 passes over the area. 5. After the whole glass is compounded, switch DA pads to a foam polishing pad and use a polish (M205) and repeat the same process. 6. Never use WAX on windshield. (wax will cause the blades to drag and skip over your glass. 7. use a glass sealant or a glass treatment solution such as rainex to seal the glass pores. 8. finally use a clean dry microfiber towel to buff clean. filling your scratches with wax is not a repair, do it right and you will feel much better about your results.

Yeah, you can fill them with wax to get by, it works really well for fine scratches, just replace the windshield if you have to sand. They're not that expensive on the more common cars and repairing deep scratches is a pain in the ass because you usually create more in the process.

The rubber from the wipers did not scratch the glass, it was dry rubber. Polish won't remove a glass scratch, at best it might fill it in, but that is not likely either. Products like RainX actually fill the micropores of the glas, making it really slick. Have you tried rubbing the wiper marks with acetone, or other solvent? Then washing it really well? There are glass polishes that can be gotten via Ebay, but they need to be handles properly or you can hurt yourself. Did the polishing wheel get dirty when you applied the wax? That might be the rubber you removed from the glass. I could be wrong, but I doubt it because no amount of wax can fill, or remove a true scratch in glass.

And how for how long will those scratches stay away? Wax doesn't do anything else than fill those scratches so that they look invisible but wax doesn't last forever.
@TheDiyDaniel
@TheDiyDaniel 9 лет назад
+YouStubid It has been a solid year since I did this video and I still have very minimal visible scratches on the windshield. I wash my car about every other week and apply rainX on the windshield after I wash it. So with proper maintenance I have had good results. However, if you read the comment above, we discussed that a better liquid to use would be buffing compound because its slightly abrasive and will actually polish out the scratches.

I have a slightly different problem. I got scratches on my driver side window. Like long scratches going up and down from what I assume was caused by dirt and tiny rocks getting stuck where the window goes down. Some are light scratches and others are a little deeper. Suggestions on how to properly fix this?
@TheDiyDaniel

It might be to the point you have to replace your windshield. This method an remedy minor scratches and what not, but you won't be able to get deeper scratches out trying this unfortunately.

DON'T use Windex on your car. Windex has ammonia which can cause corrosion or damage coatings around the windshield. It's much better to use an ammonia free cleaner. The cleaners made specifically for auto windshields are much safer.

Use the wrong compound or too much pressure with any product with micro abrasives and you will scratch the crap out of your window! You can cut into paint, this is called paint correction, "you level the paint". YOU CAN NOT CUT INTO OR LEVEL GLASS, YOU WILL DO IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE! When using products like in this video, you will fill the valleys of the scratches and it will appear like you have removed the scratches. NO DISRESPECT INTENDED, just don't want to have anyone wreak their windshield. Water spots (if not etched) and transferred material sitting “on top of the glass” will always come off but BE CAREFUL, if you do damage the glass, it wont show while your buffing, you will see the damage later in the right light and refection and go/say oh-$h1t. A girl just called me and told me “you can fix glass scratches, I seen it on You tube” PRO-DETAILER x 25 yrs.

@jeddyp416

Wax is used to protect though... polish is used to polish.
@TheDiyDaniel
@TheDiyDaniel 9 лет назад
James Puckering You are correct, wax is used to protect against further scratches. It is used to keep surfaces from being exposed to the outside elements and so I figured it would be safe to use as a non abrasive buffing compound. I tested my idea in a small area on my window and it worked for me. As seen above, it can take several coats, but it did work. So I figured it would work for other people as well.
@Jayj93pgt
@Jayj93pgt 9 лет назад
***** you cant polish or buff anything with something that is "non-abrasive." Rubbing compound is abrasive, and that's how it removes the messed up top layer of something to expose the fresh material below. I agree that by using a buffing wheel with cleaner wax you are simply filling the scratches with wax which may make it look great for any given amount of time. If you want to try and remove the scratch you need to "sand" off enough material so that all of the material is below the depth of the scratch. polishing compound is a "sanding" material. I am not trying to put you down, im assuming you want to do the best repair you can however in this situation you would really want to use a polishing compound at least for the first step in the repair.
@TheDiyDaniel
@TheDiyDaniel 9 лет назад
Jayj93pgt Well put. That is also another way that someone can use this same technique.

@TheDiyDaniel
@TheDiyDaniel 8 лет назад
+bloodmoney323 Hard to say for sure. You would have to buff that same area repetitively, but be careful that you don't do more damage than good. You also don't want to distort the windshield in that single area either. It could make it look weird when you're looking through it.

This was a waste of time. Why apply more wax onto a layer of wax you just applied? That "buffer" you're using wont do anything but struggle when you apply more pressure against the surface being polished. Then after all that wax applied, you used windex to remove the residue? Do you also wash your car immediately after you wax it? Or do you go the extra mile and clay bar over the car you've just finished washing and waxing?
