If you’re wondering how to get smoke smell out of a car I have a solution. You may have wondered if ozone machines work or will an ozone generator remove cigarette smell from a car? I decided it was worth a try and in this video I’ll show you the machine I purchased and the process I used to answer the question, how to get smoke smell out of a car.

On a smoked in vehicle you should always clean interior first. Headliner too.. Change cabin filter. Open glove box,, console pull down visors. Smoke gets every where.. When running ozone unit car should be running with ac on and in recirculation mode. Run an hour and then open doors and let air out. DON'T GET IN CAR WHEN RUNNING OZONE.

It should also have a fresh air supply for the best results. leave the windows cracked to allow the fresh air to be converted into ozone. I use multiple fans to push the ozone around on yachts. Works fantastic.

How long does the car have to air out for? Is 15 minutes enough?

I'm an auto detailer and would suggest that you clean the interior of the vehicle before running the ozone. You need to clean the headliner really good as smoke rises up. If you don't remove the source of an odor before running Ozone than you won't fully get the smell out.

@@gangster9782 It depends on type of stain, I use an super clean or meguairs APC diluted 10:1 or Folex works very good. The way you did this is all wrong. Car .ust be running with a c on, mats and all consoles need to be opened a window or trunk should be cracked open a bit. It needs to be done outside in a warm environment and should be left to air out for an hour before you go breathing inside of it

We tried an ozone machine on our camper, it now REEKS like a chemical bleachy smell that is completely untolerable. We have aired it out for a week 24/7, washed all the blankets, removed mattresses, cushions etc., but its still so awful it gives us headaches. How long will this take? We are afraid the smell is never going to leave.
@HomeSource
@HomeSource 3 года назад
If it was a car I’d say scrub all surfaces with a fabric cleaner and wet rag. But a camper is a big space with a lot of surfaces to wipe down. That’s probably still what I’d do. It sounds like you gave it a really strong treatment if it’s still strong after airing out a week. In my experience the bleach smell will fade, but it does take time. Keep it wide open for as long as you can

We recently bought a used car. After the valet stink had worn off (I binned the cheap air freshener one day one) we realised it was all done to hide the smell of tobacco smoke. It was… you could smell the car 20 feet away with just one door open. It lingered… like a fart in a lift. So I watched a few RU-vid videos about detailing and various products. I ordered an ozone generator and some cleaning products. I plugged it in, put it inside the car and set the timer for 60 minutes, closed the door and ….. it worked! No stink. I am now looking into the dangers of ozone and won’t use the car until I know what it is all about.
@Hashterix
@Hashterix 2 года назад
You should run the machine using a timer plug if not the inbuilt timer, then you're supposed to leave it off for 40 minutes before you open up the space after the treatment for airing out. Let it air out in a well ventilated space (all windows open) for a couple of hours and then it should all have dissipated. Remember ozone occurs naturally, just not in such large quantities compared to using an O3 generator. Once you've had fresh air flowing for a couple of hours it should all have moved on and be back to safe levels. Would do it in summer, and if you need to drive then do it with the windows open for the next couple of days. Would also not sleep in a bedroom for at least a day after treating it and leave the window open as long as possible afterwards, 12 hours at the least.

How were your results long term? Just got hosed by a dealer on a smoker's car that they successfully covered up to get the sale through. I'm doubting I'm going to be able to completely eliminate it. I've ordered an ozone machine. How did it go for you long term? Did the smell ever come back?
@LysanderLH
@LysanderLH Год назад
@@ryeann2567 I did the whole job. My advice is that if you have any redress; any way to return the car, now is the time to do that. I changed the cabin air filter (easy out-in job on most cars) after vacuuming all of the air vents out, including those under the seats and for rear passengers. I bought a very long flexible wire bottle cleaner. A long flexy plastic bristled brush which can be inserted into the vent tubes with the blower on full blast. You do not want to breathe in the ash, so wear a face mask during this phase. Then I did a complete vaccuming and shampooing of all carpets and mats, the headliner, headrests, seats, rear parcel shelf and scrubbed and wiped all surfaces. Basically everything you see, you clean like you’re hiding evidence from the Police, like that Harvey Keitel scene in Pulp Fiction. Don’t use anything highly scented and take your time. You’re removing ash and smoke stink from fabrics and the spongy seats, so be very thorough. Three times over everything is just the start. This is day one. The second phase starts when the car has dried out. Only after blitzing the car like a maniac, did I do the Ozone treatment. To answer your question, it wasn’t an instant fix but it made a huge difference and I have done it three times since. The biggest problem is the seats and carpets because they hold the ash and smoke stink. But the plastics do too and must be cleaned really well and not just sprayed and wiped with silicone cockpit shine! It’s not at all easy and using a toothbrush was the best way to get right into those textured surfaces. This part also takes hours! After doing this and routinely hoovering the car out (once you’ve got it that clean, it’s easier to keep it that way) about every month, and driving around with windows open and aircon on when possible, the stink is 90% gone. IMPORTANT!! Do not use the Ozone device and immediately use your car. You will need to air it out completely, for days if possible, before using it. If you did all of this on a Friday (it takes hours), you need to leave the car wide open all weekend and only drive it once the metallic smell has gone. Don’t rush it. So as of today, I would say this has worked well and keeping air scents in the car will help disguise any residual smells. From what the car was like when we got it, to now, I would say you’d really have to know it once stank of smoke. The Ozone treatment worked very well but without all ofvthe rest, it wouldn’tbhave been nearly as good.

You might want to consider a few bags of activated charcoal under the seats. One of the best natural odor trappers. You have to "recharge" the charcoal every once in a while though, out in the hot sun works for a few hours. You have to recharge it more often in humid climates. I just bought a smoker car that I didn't realize was a smoker's car until after the odor bomb "mask" that the dealership applied wore off. Spent $250 so far on removing the smell. Did ozone first which was a mistake. Then hired an experienced mobile detailer who did carpet and upholstery extraction with enzyme cleaner and then steam cleaning, even (very carefully) the headliner. The smoke smell is encased, on the molecular level, in tar and nicotine (oily) molecules. Steam is one of the best way to break down those molecules. If you just treat the air without treating embedded surface issues, you aren't addressing the root issue, which you already know. I've got mine down from a "100" to a "5" and still will work on that last 5 until I'm satisfied. I hate cigarette smoke!

@@pkal244 I recently bought my own ozone machine similar to the one in this video. I'm just going to run it for 30 minutes at a time until that last 5 percent is gone. Don't know how many times that will take. I can say from experience that the last 5 or 10 percent (what I now call a "background" smell) is the hardest to get rid of.
@grezair7117
@grezair7117 3 года назад
There is also a huge amount of surface area behind the dashboard. Lots of plastics for nicotine molecules to cling to and that, without disassembly, you are not physically addressing. Same for the spaces within your car doors. I've had some detailers recommend removing all door panels and removing dashboard and clean those areas. I don't have the energy for that, yet.

1) vacuum everything, 2) wipe windows, steering wheel, plastic surfaces and dash with ammonia solution, 3) ozone machine 1 hour (several times), 4) Put strong bleach solution or pool puck chunks in solution in a bowl and let it sit overnight in car. The chlorine fumes WILL disinfect. Run AC (recycled) for a while with Ozone and also with bleach (chlorine). Each step should help a lot.

@@HomeSource 10,000 mg/hr is overkill for a car, but I guess you got it for your properties (one room at a time) 2birds right! So I bought a smokers car and I’m a smoker too, but my other cars don’t smell like an ashtray gang in prison because: 1- Never turn on HVAC while smoking. If -35C cold, position vent to feet and fan on medium-Low. Never AC smoke or Re-Circulate while smoking NEVER. 2- crack only 1 window 5cm to achieve vacuum effect. 3- keep cig hand close to window crack, one eye on the cherry and one hand at the wheel. 4- ash & butt out the window then roll down all 4 windows to clear smell. 5- Quit if you can, if not vape in the car. Here’s what I did to neutralize smell: A) HVAC Evap/Core Foam cleaning: Musty odor smell is typically due to bad filter or clogged drain. Always use charcoal (carbon activated) filter replace as needed. Second most common reason is Mold/Mildew in HVAC evap/core. I used nose hose from dealer kit ($50/kit) and then started buying AC SAFE NO RINSE foaming rad evap condenser cleaner from HomeDepot/Hardware Lowes Rona etc. $10/bottle. MUST be NO RINSE. Locate Evap drain pipe under car (can also inject from blower motor/cabin filter opening or through front centre vents) but the drain pipe is the most effective. 1-Turn OFF car, wear PPE get under and shove pointy nose hose into Evap drain pipe and 2- depress bottle empty half can, 3- then leave drain plugged & wait 20 min for foam to expand into as much HVAC core surface area as possible after which foam liquifies and drains by gravity, unplug and let it drain (use clean catch pan so you can see & assess the dirt) repeat steps 1-3 to remaining foam bottle. 4- Then turn ON car, roll up windows, set HVAC fan (or AC) on RE-CIRC & HIGH let run for 20 min. 5- Then, turn OFF AC (compressor) leaving FAN on HIGH & Roll down windows to air out the disinfecting foaming detergent. Although it smells great, it’s not something you should inhale: it’s NOT an air freshener.[also chemicals btw] A-1) Air Intake Cleaning: 1-Turn on car HVAC on FRESH-AIR with AC (compressor) ON fan on HIGH, vent open to FACE only. Roll up all windows and close doors. 2- Locate cabin air-intake found under wiper arms & above firewall (usually passenger side) 3- Use Lysol or Dealer or other similar spray disinfectant onto intake thoroughly and generously (45 second intervals) Each interval switch to FEET only then DEFROST only, until the bottle empties 4- let it run its course for 20 min. FACE & FEET & DEFROST Equally. 5- turn OFF AC (compresser) keep FAN ON HIGH & roll down all windows, take a drive to force more air through intake & out windows. B) Armour All or similar vent & duct cleaning: Just like above (A-1) section but through vents. 1- Locate all vents (Defrost Dash vents by windshield) floor foot vents (Front & rear) FACE vents. 3- Turn OFF car 4- Spray contents through attached straw in each vent. Let straw spray through vents into ducts. 5- wait 20 min 6- Windows UP run FAN only on HIGH & RE-CIRCULATE for 20 min- I don’t see the point of running the compressor. 7- Windows DOWN keep fan running on FRESH-AIR mode and take a drive to air out car further. It might smell nice but it’s still not for inhalation, it supposed to clean & disinfect HVAC. (This Armour All is also a foamy solution, not to be confused with EVAP foam, it’s a much milder solution that doesn’t expand as well and isn’t enough quantity for an Evap job) C) clean carpets, seats, headliner & other fabrics. 1- Steam. 2- Shampoo 3- Hot water Extractor. Note- Be careful with headliner adhesive. This should REMOVE some smoke odour source. WAIT & smell, if 1-6 days passed & no difference (ask others who don’t ride that car often) if they can still sense a lingering soft smoke smell then move to step D. You can also move to D if you can visibly smell it or you like to try all. D) OZONE treatment: Don’t Use OZONE O3 near: >People | Pets | Plants >Directly after carpet cleaning or detailing car or the above Evap Vents & Ducts steps, O3 neutralizes all odours good or bad as well any gaseous state matter. Prolonged exposure will oxidize solid state matter. O3 (unstable/reactive) = O2 (stable Oxygen gas) + O (elemental oxygen) Elemental Oxygen gas high electron affinity & will strip/steal electrons from other atoms by forming stronger covalent bonds which destroys existing bonds of odour causing gases (bad scents) hence that’s how it neutralizes odours. It does the same to our esophagus & lungs as well as metals & vinyl etc. 1- Hide metals (seat belts buckled in, head rest metal/chrome etc) 2-Turn ON HVAC fan to HIGH on RE-CIRC set on high HEAT. (Hot air rises) 3- Position OZONE GEN near headliner (use bungie cords through the OZONE Gen handles and rear seat arm supports) O3 is denser than O2 H2 N2 and other gases in our atmosphere (air in the car) so it ozone sinks to bottom. Plug in a fixed fan along with car vent heat should do the trick. 4- preset 10-30 min depending on odour severity. Close all doors / windows and run. Do in intervals if required more than 30 min. For example: 4-30 min treatments instead of a solid 2 hours. 5- preset Ozone Gen 30 min. Wait another 30 min (oxidation reaction time), roll down windows, doors & set FRESH-AIR mode for 60 min (Treatment + ‘cure’ time) Ozone has a strong lingering smell. Air out for 2 or more hours if you have to. Drive on highway if you have to. Finally, If that still didn’t work & you and other still smell smoke odour, then pay $350-850 for professional detailer with warranty and fumigation guarantee. If that still didn’t work sell the car. If you can’t sell due to odour, then start smoking in the car and the scent will be unnoticeable by your 3rd pack. 😝
