I don't worry about print sales personally. I just charge a set price for per game of the team or the specific player. That ends up breaking down to about $15-$20 per kid on the team. Because we all know that they are going to steal the photos like you talked about. However if they pay upfront for your time you are covered as far as paid for your time.

Even when I was a working photojournalist for the newspaper, I'd get harassed whether it be from a school official or a parent. Like I always say on the podcast, it's important to get permission first (as you've said) and also to know what you're going to say should you be confronted because making it up on the spot never works well. And I've seen others be all confrontational back to whoever approaches them and that NEVER ends well. Diffusing the situation goes a long way. Humor helps as well.

Call the cops if the parent won't leave you alone. You're allowed to take pictures of whoever and whatever you want.

Ok.. I use the T shaped one as well. At 1st i did use the zone focusing screen but like u said it would focus on the wrong person when there was multiple ppl in shot or even when it did focus on the correct person I felt like in never would focus on there face.

Derrick. buy as much hard drive space as you can afford. That is cheap now so having several terabytes would not be out of line imo. The machine I'm currently on has 10.5 terabytes of drive space. Also look at graphic performance and put money into that sub-system. I figure by now you have a system...

What type of printer do u have for on the spot printing?

+Dougie Fresh I have a DNP DS 40 and a DNP DS 80 and I use a Canon Pixma Pro 100 for the larger prints. It's not the fastest setup, but given that I don't have enough viewing stations it keeps up with what I typically use them for. If i decide to start up doing on site printing for sports again I will add viewing station and a few more printers, unfortunately I just don't have the needed investment capital these days lol. Unfortunately, I lose a lot of sales simply because of a lack of viewing stations. The DNA printers work great when they work, but I have on occasion, had issues with them that I cant figure out what causes the problem. Turn them off and on, unplug them and they are usually fine again, but this is frustrating when you have a line of people. Its only happened about 4 times in two years. The printing cost is low and you don't have to let the prints dry. Dye sub printers are great for any on-site printing. The Pixma pro is the easiest photo printer I have used. Wifi setup works flawlessly and accurate colors every time, but it's slow to print.

I would have like to of heard more about how you got going as opposed to all the bad mouthing of your potential customers, or for that matter that fact that you don't seems to be making money unless you can get inside on some tournament. I get the make a deal with the tournament director for his/her cut of the cash that is made sometimes. I make money from print sales, and the I have never saw an image of mine that was watermarked posted by anyone. Not to say it can't happen but so far I'm lucky I guess... But I don't know how fair or if you were impacted by calling people dumb that might buy from you. I do agree there are those that fish, and those that buy, Likely the issue was how you were presenting photos to possible customers. But you spent a lot of time talking "US" out of even shooting sports. This just seemed to be more a lesson in "YOU" making money at the end of the day. I do like that you covered insuring, but maybe you should of done some an estimated on what their pricing versus the cost of the photographer's equipment? There might be for those that were more curious to know about how that process works. Papers really want writers/slash photographers so they hand a camera to a kid and says get us stats, scores ad photos. Last year as a basketball shootout there was a media guy who had no idea how the camera the newspaper gave him worked. I gave his some pointer since he was next to me in the media box, but at the end of it I just made a deal with him to transfer a couple of my images to him so he would have something decent to take back. The REALITY of "How to Get Started in Sports Photography" Make people feel like saying he has a good idea! I'm going to do that! I like that you made the video for sure but, I felt like this was more so a complaint by you that people steal from you with some acknowledgment of what is expected of a sport photog. Annnnnnnnnnnnd Yeeeeeeeeees I'm griping!!!..lol I've shot as a commercial industrial photographer for 20+ yrs and have started branching Sports Photography, but "thus far in 4 years I only just this year have a ref tell me that I had to be off the court side because it was some new rule by State Athletics board. So I asked the ref was he planning on asking the trash can to move so player could be safe? He didn't see it as funny but the crowd loved it!!..lol Again nice but maybe about you not so much next time?
