I have always wondered how you do that soft look! The last time had been the day before you announced this video. This is indeed one of the best videos on your channel: simple, yet incorporating your experience. That is a sure sign of a pro, to explain complicated things easily. Nice start for 2023! Thank you!

This might be, perhaps, one of your best videos/content. I’ve questioned myself often how to soft my photos in a consistent way without a black mist 1/4 filter or other type of filter and there it is. Thank you 🙏

I recently figured out another way to achieve a softer look, a bit less aggressive and far simpler than Orton effect - I create a Luminance mask in Lightroom and select highlights on the extreme (up to 10% of the scale) with soften edges and then further reduce clarity on this mask. I quite enjoy the results I achieved in a few pictures using this method :) Thanks for sharing Roman!

Great tutorial ! Very useful for those moments where you dont have a filter for some specific lenses, but, those filters, they still do a pretty good job, and, that process you explained, is pretty time consuming. Those filters, even if quite expensive sometimes, do save you a good amount of time. Also, the flares have a specific look with the filter on, that is pretty hard to simulate. And actualy, i just saw a reel of a guy braking his lense, but only the filters he had on were broken, so, it seems that filters can actually protect your lense ahah

Great content. I love the techniques. It’s why I still shoot film. I much prefer the character of old lenses and film. We seem to have become obsessed with ‘clinically sharp’ lenses. Unfortunately I’m my opinion they lack that special quality which old vintage lenses have.

facts. i shoot all of my projects on a mamiya rb67. nothing will ever beat the look. adding a promist 1/8 filter works relatively well but still doesnt achieve the best look out of camera

Hey I enjoy the content and am getting into photography. Just some feedback (and it could just be me), but there was some weird harshness in the audio recording, could be related to echo in the room or something else Specifically it was at the beginning of the video, not sure what it was. Could just be bad phone speakers.

Most diffusion filters add an almost Vaseline look which I hate. I pretty much use your exact method in post if I don’t use a filter but 99% of the time I have a glimmerglass 1 glued to my lens regardless of what I’m shooting. I find it’s the only diffusion filter I like as it gives a much more film like halation effect similar to what you’re doing in post.
@zip5644
@zip5644 Год назад
have you used the tiffen 1/8? thats the one i find the best inbetween of the soft look with decent contrast
@AnthonyJGianotti
@AnthonyJGianotti Год назад
@@zip5644 black promist or glimmerglass? For glimmerglass I find a 1 is even less diffusion then a promist 1/8, the glimmerglass 1/8 is almost too weak imo. Regardless I much prefer the look of the diffusion of the glimmerglass as it essentially adds halation and without the same hit to sharpness and contrast applied by a promist.
@zip5644
@zip5644 Год назад
@@AnthonyJGianotti understandable! i just personally fond paying for the glimmerglass to be not worthwhile considering the effect it has is very easy to replicate in post. i have the promist 1/8 and i feel like it replicates the look of medium format lenses the best considering i use an rb67 and a canon 5d mark ii for my commercial/fashion shoots
@AnthonyJGianotti
@AnthonyJGianotti Год назад
@@zip5644 fair enough, especially for fashion photography, I mostly shoot street and landscape. For me there is just something about the glimmerglass that I can’t get enough of and can’t quite replicate in post as the contrast slider flattens the image too much and negative clarity impacts the sharpness too much. It really is worth picking one up to mess around with, I think you’ll be surprised at the results vs the promist. I also shoot apsc now so the extra pixels, better glass and light gathering capability of medium format probably handles the softening effect of the promist and/or post tools better then my current 26mp apsc sized sponsor.
@zip5644
@zip5644 Год назад
@@AnthonyJGianotti yeah the way i achieve halation in post isnt necessarily with sliders but with filters and highlight masking in photoshop. make the image black and white then select the whites and add a gaussian blur on them and adjust the opacity and then you can go in and mask where exactly you want the effect to be applied. i may try the glimmerglass but from what ive seen with it it just doesnt do *enough* to warrant purchasing you know what i mean

Roman. Stop giving away the good tips 🤣... I use similar workflow except for one thing. I use global filters at the start to get the raw imagine as best as possible...as if the scene was naturally good. Then I apply a similar workflow...I find doing the above reduces the total local masks I need. Ps. Thank you for your work.
