Lighting so that the fish show their best colors in both my 300 gallon African Cichlid tank and my 210 gallon American Cichlid tank is finally dialed in! Here are my tips on how to get the best results when lighting a monster tank, or any tank for that matter.
Do you have some lighting tips? Share them in the comment section under the video. We all learn from each other at this channel. Remember to always be learning and don't ever forget that you reading this right now - YOU ROCK!
If you like the content of this channel please don't forget to hit that sub button, thumbs up and notification bell. It tells RU-vid that something worthwhile is going on and encourages RU-vid to share the channel with other fish keepers like you and me.
Lighting of the 300 and 210 gallon African Cichlid tanks is provided by JC&P and AQQA.
For JC&P LED lights (and other aquarium products JC&P offers) use this link: jcpaquarium.com?sca_ref=936021.gPiOsPIQTH
For AQQA/Hygger lights use this link:
www.amazon.com/dp/B09LQN76Q4?ref=myi_title_dp
For 10% off AQQA use code: AQQA2022
Remember that fish keeping is truly a "fluid situation" and what works for one set-up might not work for another. Do plenty of research gathering information from several reliable sources before making any changes in your aquarium.
Some of you have asked for a way to support the channel. I thank you for asking. Here are a couple ways you can help to keep the content coming:
- Join the "Garage Gang" by becoming a Patreon member and get early access to videos and behind the scenes content not available to the public. Use this link for more info: www.patreon.com/user?u=13754188
- Do you shop on Amazon? Use this link to visit my Amazon store (and for all of your Amazon purchases, fish or non-fish related): amazon.com/shop/benochart
Any qualified purchase, after using that link to get to Amazon, will provide the channel with a small percentage. You still get the best price on all goods, so we all win!
- Visit my TeeSpring store at:
ben-ocharts-store.creator-spr...
and pick up some channel merchandise. The store offers coffee mugs, tees, hoodies and other cool stuff. All purchases pay the channel a small percentage. Use "LIVESTREAM" for a 10% discount at check-out.

Those are really nice lights that you have on there I like the way you can adjust those I run Hygger on my 55 it's the full spectrum light which is really nice you can control the lights to make them just like what you did making it dimmer cuz I have some angel fish that are real jerks and need to calm down so I put calmer lights on for them

Looks good. If you lift the front lights somewhat it will help dissipate heat better and extend the life of the leds.

That 300 beast is just incredible. Is there possibly a way to arrange your studio to put that 300 directly behind you as the background for live streams. I'm no video person, it's just a thought that might look cool. Thank you for the lighting demo, that gives ideas.

Planted tanks need a full spectrum led light source for a minimum 8-9 hours and most hobbyists ark this time for their enjoyment.. in a fish only system such as predator, Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganyika spectrum lights are not needed, heck these types of tanks don’t even need lights at all. Plants need lights coral need lights, reptiles and humans need lights. Fish do not need lights, you illuminate a fish only system for your enjoyment and nothing else, anyone who has been in this hobby any length of time knows the minute a product has aquarium, fish or tank in its title it automatically allows the manufacturer to place a higher than needed price tag. Anyone who has gone to the trouble of ordering or making a LARGE custom tank for a fish only system I’d go straight to a DIY store or Amazon and go straight to the external/outside environmental protected lighting section and choose a combination of warm and cool flood light led 70-80watt equivalent your fish colours will truly pop and heck you would even get that shimmer effect with your water movement.

Good points. But not how I roll. The best color I’ve seen in African Cichlids has been under sun light. The best approximation we have of sun light are full spectrum lights. Common lights are mostly yellow and I think they don’t do fish justice. Besides, do you really think that someone who has paid between 2k and 6k for a custom tank is then going to go to Home Depot and cobble together a $40 light fixture? The DIY lights I see are usually clunky. I much prefer both the lighting and thin clean look of LED full spectrum lights. But to reach their own. You have to go with what you are comfortable with and there’s room in the hobby for every type of lighting.

@@BenOchart I’m just giving a non bias point of view as not meaning to insult you or your channel but as a fish tank influencer which let’s not pretend is exactly what you are as you have members and patrons supporting you, that there are very different avenues you could explain. Also I have a custom tank that yes cost a pretty penny, mine came with a hood that would easily hide bulky lights. I’m fully live planted but if only a fish only system I’d have gone straight to a budget light choice, which by the way the new led weather proof are just as slim as a Fluval plant 3.0 but yes they have a mounting bracket.. A gent in England only uses DIY flood lights his channel is MD Aquatics his Discus really pop under these lights so maybe don’t throw to much shade at this idea.. also warm white and cool white are the major bulbs in full spectrum.
