How To Get The BEST Night Trail Camera Pictures (From Any Brand)

In this video we discuss how to get better night time images out of your trail cameras. A lot of times the only pictures of that illusive buck you are after are at night and the quality of those images might be a priority to you. If that is true, check out these tips to make your night time photos the best they can be.
The first topic to discuss is the type of flash unit in the camera. The three flash types we will discuss are White Flash, Infared Flash or Red Glow, and Black Flash or No Glow.
WHITE FLASH
White flash cameras help take awe-inspiring colorful night pictures and have a long flash range. However, the vibrant white flash can be invasive to wildlife and wary bucks. Also, trespassers will see the white flash and might inspect the camera after triggering it.
INFRARED
Infrared or red glow cameras are a step up from white flash in the sense of human and wildlife visibility, but the night time pictures will not be color. If your purpose of the trail camera is for scouting deer, infrared is much less invasive than the white flash. Infrared flash modules typically have the longest flash range in comparison to white flash and black flash cameras. However, infrared cameras are still visible and have a faint red glow when taking a picture at night.
BLACK FLASH/NO GLOW
If you're chasing wary old bucks and a serious whitetail hunter, black flash cameras should be your camera of choice. Black flash/no glow cameras are completely invisible to human eye and wildlife. Therefore, your camera can double as a security camera and scouting tool, all while going undetected at night.
The next item to discuss is the physical image sensor in the camera and the mega pixel size. The larger the pixel size on the image sensor, the more light is collected creating a better night time image. Just keep in mind the interpolation process and the marketing gimmicks on the market.
Now, we can talk about settings inside that camera that you can control. The first being the flash range settings. In the lift II and the exodus render, you can adjust the flash range from low, medium, and high. The higher the flash range, the better the night time images will be.
The second setting you can control to improve night time photos is the burst count. The reason for running a burst count is to combat motion blur. If you set your cameras up on a 2 or three shot burst, that flash will be omitted during that entire sequence rather than for a single photo. Try this to significantly improve your night time photo quality.
The final thing to mention, and possibly the most important to you as a consumer, is the actual camera location. Think back to your camera sets on a field edge. The night time photos are typically pretty poor in those types of locations. This is because there is nothing for the light of the flash to reflect off of. When the camera is triggered and the flash is omitted, what is in the detection area will have a huge impact on the quality of the photos. Every material has some sort of light absorption qualities. Whether there's a tree, grass, or there's nothing to bounce that light back off of will determine how pristine the photos are. If running cameras on a field edge is a priority to you, try hanging the cameras high and angling them down to bounce that light off of the ground. You can also hang them in an inside corner and use the opposite tree line to reflect the light back to the camera.
With all that being said, we are firm believers that you need to hang your cameras where the deer are. If you have to give up some night time image quality to capture images of your target buck, then so be it. After all, you can only hunt them in the day time anyways.

Love how you guys educate others without pushing your own line of cameras. While I am an Exodus owner I think that is pretty cool and inclusive of all the hunting community. Keep up the good work.

We know you have put a lot of thought into the use of trail cameras because NO ONE in the rest of the industry hasn’t done half of what you do, setting you apart from them…and I must add how funny it was to hear the reflected light off the watch into the teachers face, I cracked a rib laughing so hard. Keep up the great work, 👍🙏🦌

You put a lot of very good information in this video. Raising the camera 6 to seven feet also helps to reduce spooking deer if your camera has red IRs. Keep up the great work.

It is a magnificent explanation, like all the material you publish. The anecdote of the wristwatch and the reflection of light is very good. I think those things were done by those of us who didn't study much. Too bad your cameras are not sold in Spain. A cordial greeting.

To place a came where a buck comes and makes a scrape is next level. I mean... Wow. Ive ran cams since they were all film cameras that required development. Tech has came so far. Unfortunately, I can't budget for the high end units, but can certainly appreciate the quality produced by them. Currently im running on luck with my trail cam. So many people complain about the cell cam spypoint makes, mines been out three years and still running smoothly. (knock on wood, said a prayer, crossed my fingers) 😅 Thanks for the info sir. These videos are superb! Edit: went to exodus website, have a cam in my price range (pleasantly surprised) saw the price per month chart, is there an unlimited plan for a year? I opted for that with my current cam, after thinking about it, good for consumer, but manufacturer would benefit more by doing it like Exodus has in the chart. Nothing wrong with doing it monthly, business must turn profit to keep innovation moving forward for the consumer base. The 179.00 cell cam offered is head and shoulders above my current cam im sure. Thanks again. Double edit- this is 3 years old. 😂. Sorry. Not likely youll see this. Appreciate u nonetheless!

I have a Wosoda trail cam. Every time I put the settings exactly to another guy's settings on here, I test it out by using my Chromebook and its totally blank. There's nothing there! What am I doing wrong? I also have a Sesern trail cam. I get the same results! Can you please help me understand where I am going wrong? I know good people on here are so seasoned about trail cams that often details are left out. Please help. Thank you

If I'm getting night time pictures that are getting a lot of "white out" from the intensity of the flash can it be reduced by covering up some of the bulbs with electrical tape?

we have had 2 trail cameras... for about 3 months they ran great then all of a sudden the night shot started to get darker and darker on the outside of the videos. the first one did this and then blacked out to video so that nothing was seen..... we bought another and it is now doing the same thing.... any suggestions on what is happening or what setting might be wrong...

Thanks for reaching out - what brand/model is the camera? It could be the power supply/batteries from the sound of it or the flash units are going out.

I'm confused, both my Lift I and Lift II cameras definitely emit a soft red glow that is detectable by human eyes.

Hey David, all the led bulbs will change color, that’s why companies use the black coverings on flash units. However, there should be no flash from any of our cameras!

Good information. I guess the debate continues on if deer are spooked by IR light. I put up a 400' IR spotlight for my two security cameras overlooking my homemade feeder (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IxqTrMExGAc.html). It does seem that deer keep looking at this light, however, my house and pole light are some 500' feet up the hill in the same direction so they may be looking at that. Some are saying that a "black filter" over the IR light will hide this red IR glow. Is this true? If so, can this black filter material be purchased to cover my light?
