is it okay to just use the beneficial bacteria because we don't have a filter and the pond is quite big..

I’ve applied pond bacteria to my pond. What’s happening is the muck is starting to come loose from the bottom of my pond, making for a big mess floating on top. Been scooping it up, but way too much work.

Hi Steve...on the one hand I see this as a good thing. This compacted muck is getting loosened up and being broken down. The downside being its floating and a hassle to remove it. I would expect this to lessen as time goes on...there is likely some breakdown happening which will also reduce the build up, but just some of the compacted cap could be what your seeing and once that's come up, you won't see it anymore. Just hard to say how long it might continue.

You never mentioned how often do I treat everyday, week or month????

Hi Don...thanks for the comment. The best answer is it depends on the product (check the lable or instructions for specifics). For instance, some powders and liquids probably need to be added weekly or every couple of weeks. The Biosphere Pro which we use a lot will treat for a full month at a time so for those every 30 to 35 days if needed. Not all ponds need regular supplementation. Some only get a shot or two early in the season and are fine with that. Others need more regular treatments based on the nutrient loading they are dealing with. Hope this helps for you.

On a 20 acre pond, is it possible to treat a portion of the pond and expect to see any results?

Good question Mark. The only time you could treat a portion of the pond with a microbial would be with muck digesting pellets, which are a contact type treatment. They are targetable and can be used in very specific areas, with good effect. Otherwise, the typical microbial treatment would have to be dosed for the full pond volume which would have to account for the surface area and depth. If this is not done the treatment would be too diluted to do much good.

Hi my pond is fairly new... A 300gal pond with green water. It's in direct sunlight as that's the only place at the moment. I have a 5 gal bucket with bio media filtration with 3 submerged water plants and 8 water hyacinth. The pond is 2 weeks old and only today I used a bacteria treatment. What else can I do to remove the green algae water. Should I also continue with the bacteria weekly etc? Had the green water about 1 week now.

Green water is due to algae. You should use a uv filter to solve your problem.

Remove the sunlight. Full sun all day is not good. Filter hasn't matured so soon. Go VERY easy on the amount of fish you put in the pond and the amount of food they get. Pond bacteria are not for green water, but for nitrates, nitrites an ammonia.

Ion generator IonGen. I put a very green piece of copper in the inflow area for a while, until algae is gone. I also use this concept in my above ground pool
