Hey Michael, I'd like to bring you a different perspective on "Apple is retiring their old devices" from a developer perspective - I'd also like to preface that I agree that planned obsolescence fucking sucks and should be highly discouraged. With that in mind: - Apple is a company and companies are built to generate profit. They use planned obsolescence to bank on consumers, I'm not saying that you're wrong in expecting them to be different, we should expect the same from every company, I'm just saying that pointing the finger on Apple for this is useless and Apple is not even close to being one of the worse examples. - Supporting old versions of things fucking sucks from a developer standpoint. It adds complexity to the whole software development process and it can lead to more brittle software. I'm not saying that Apple doesn't have the scale to support older stuff, they definitely do, and example would be Rosetta, which runs Intel software on M1 hardware! - There will be features that you cannot ship to certain devices, Windows 11 is an example: they've chosen to use TPM 2.0 and that meant leaving TONS of devices behind, though this feature is meant to enable more security for the users. It wasn't the case because the developers couldn't backport it, it was because the hardware didn't support it. In some cases, it could reach a point where they would be shipping a new OS to certain devices, where no new features are available because your computer doesn't have the hardware to support them - I think there's no point in shipping an update that doesn't do anything. Consumers want new shinny toys and to have them, developers need to make concessions, if you want to make use of new hardware, users can't expect developers to magically make it appear on their old devices. - Sometimes, taking advantage of new hardware doesn't have to do with using new features of the hardware, but just that you have more resources available, more RAM, more CPU, etc. There are features in software (not all) that are only enabled by more resources and so they can be shipped to older devices but won't work reliably on them, and then you get customers complaining that the latest and greatest Photoshop generative neural network is slow on their 10 year old laptop - it's unfair! Though I'll add that this is not an excuse for developers to develop inefficient software! Finally, you're probably the first music producer I've seen actually looking for updates. What I mean by this is that people will purposefully keep some devices outdated because as they are, they do their job reliably, and so, it's not uncommon to see old devices, running old software, disconnected from the internet to avoid updates, afraid they will break their workhorses (a thing that happens way too much). I'm not saying you shouldn't update your software, you definitely should and developers should do a better job testing it, I just found it interesting. I hope I was able to make you consider a different perspective, I'm not expecting you to change anything, I just wanted to explain that it's not always "Apple bad" but rather a balancing act that they need to do and hopefully spark an interesting discussion in the replies. And I know that this doesn't apply to everything and we as consumers shouldn't just accept throwing away perfectly good hardware just because a new version came out, to that end, I appreciate your GAS Therapy series a lot! And I wish more people took your approach. Best regards!

This video is hilarious, inspiring, and informative. I feel like at the Apple Stores that I visit the employees would be more annoying about just like using the computers for an extended amount of time. At this point I think I'm future-proofed for at least several years with my Macbook Air M1 (which I bought used). Besides I don't even want to upgrade past MacOS Monterey because they made the system preferences so disgusting on MacOS Ventura. Anyway! Great video! I love the vies of China.

One thing that Michael will have realised a long time ago is that once you go past a certain threshold of computing power you are only wasting your money. You only need so much power for music making. How many tracks do you actually need? How many plugins do you really need to run? Old laptops and old iPads do the job. As long as the hardware is still working you don't need to buy a new device. And if you have got in to the Apple world at the M1 you won't need to upgrade the machine for a very long time. The M1 can run far more tracks than you realistically need and with more plugins on than would make any sense. Save your money for better things.

i get the sentiment, but if your only option to make beats is to use the computers at a retail store, then i think beat making should come secondary to getting your basic needs met. Ive only ever made minimum wage my whole life an ive always been able to find a way to pay for things that were relevant to my hobbies.used macs are a dime a dozen and people are still using 2010 macbooks to make music to this day. obviously exceptions exist, but in my opinion, youre not even remotely serious about music production if you cant find a way to shell out for some kind of core music gear. be that a sampler, a pc with a daw, a phone app, or something else.literally you can get started making music AT HOME for very cheap. Also , idk about yall, but i dont have 2 hours to blow commuting to the apple store every time im inspired to make a track

mountains of ewaste, it hurts when decent imac desktops are declared obsolete. they have trouble handling software updates and new devices. that's why i switched to hardware, the hardware synths outlast the computer. no problem with system changes, no cpu problems. i stopped using a collection of software instruments because they were too hard on the old computer. turn on a software model buchla for example and watch the cpu meter hit the roof. the computer is fine with old fashioned instruments. i record into ableton live and just bought an ipad to give software instruments on garage band a try, then export tracks into ableton on the desktop.

One of the local libraries here near me put in a "Maker Space". It's a room full of stuff that you can use to just make stuff. There's sewing machines. There's a 3D printer. There's all kinds of stuff. And one of the things they have is a Mac with Garageband, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live, on it, and a guitar. So that's a potential option if you can find a library that has one of these maker spaces. Hopefully, they'll become common in libraries in states where politics isn't defunding the heck out of them of closing them altogether. For the past couple decades, the conservative political party here has been obsessed with closing as many public libraries as they can, and they've only gotten more aggressive with that as the years have gone by.

This "Apple loop" you describe with programmed obsolescence is definetely rooted into music tech already, with companies releasing gears purposefully limited or unfinished to incite people to buy something else to cover this - which may be another limited gear or a "pro" app - and so on. Of course this is not the case for every gear, but it's sure a trend.

renting is a perpetual fee. as you said it is paid for the life of the device. a rental is a short term solution. I have computers in operation as we speak that are over 15 years old. They are still doing what they were designed to do and were only paid for one time. The amount was the equivalent of a very short rental. It would have made no sense to still be paying rent on them. I own them and many new ones also. They perform the function they were designed to and are not subject to a rental agreement. Software rental can be even worse. If you never own the software and they make a change you do not like you could end up SOL. Also in the case of music, with a rental you may not be able to get your work out of old projects, or if you stop renting you may not be able to access any of your projects. If you are lucky you may get your stems, but that will be it. Only rent when it is short term and nothing in the future depends on it.

I don't remember the exact wording. But, that is pretty much why I hate Apple. There's always one feature that I feel like should be there missing. And, no easy fix.

Excellent topic! I’ve also been ready for the post apocalypse by mostly using I find at thrift stores. Apple gear can be challenging because of how they obsolete their old stuff. For example I just got a 1st generation iPad. After factory reset, it’s good as new, but you can’t download anything from the App Store. Even apps that I know used to run on the earliest iPad are artificially prevented from downloading. What would you do with a first Gen iPad?

The best thing I ever did was buy my Macbook air refurb. But I would point out that using a piece of gear like a novation circuit or other devices may not be as powerful, but you won't most probably have to update them as much as a regular computer. I do music for a living and I have things going on with that. My band is releasing an album this year and our first single off this record is on the way. So this is more than a hobby for me.

How to get the latest product and how to use in store demo products are 2 very different concepts and not valid for many people (due to lack of store nearby or simply not convenient). Also, nothing wrong with creating music every day, definitely better than pissing your money in a bar 😂
