I'm 67 and I could demonstrate how to get up out of a bed of dead honey locust tree branches which have 2" thorns, with no one around at all. No cell phone. Every move was a poke somewhere. It seemed impossible, but I finally decided I could start throwing branches away from me so that the little area around me wasn't so thorny. Then I was able to locate a thick enough branch to help with leverage, but I had to get up on an upward slope. I felt SO POWERFUL for getting myself out of that predicament that day. I was glad for the muscle tone I had acquired. I had dozens of holes over my body, but I'm here!

I am 70 and have arthritis in my hips. I often feel that my legs will buckle under me. I had an incident as I was coming out of my bathroom into the bedroom where my feet just didn’t work and down I went. Very heavily but nothing broken, but the whole thing frightened me as I have a fear of falling and hitting the bath or toilet with my head. But I just waited until my heart stopped racing before I did anything. Then when I tried to get up I just didn’t have the strength. But as I was not hurt (though I had a massive bruise on my knee the next day) I decided there was no rush to get up. I was near my cupboard where pillows and blankets are kept so I just pulled a pillow and blanket out from the lower shelf and made a bed on the floor and had a nap for about half an hour. Then I was feeling better and was able to get myself up by holding on to the shelves until I was standing. Falling over is a damn scary thing.

I have had three pretty bad falls, I have had one knee replacement and need another one. I am unable to get on my knees. It’s impossible for me to get up that way. I fell outside and waited 2 hours for a neighbor to come home and get me up. My girls said I had to get a thing to wear around my neck or an iPhone watch. I got the watch, it detects a fall and I set it up to call the police, my son and my daughter. I feel so much better now.

This is my tip. My husband & I are in middle seventies. In January this year we made a new rule. Never to go anywhere in house or garden without our mobile phone. This came about after My Husband had a fall. I used that first option to get him up as he has had one knee replaced. Stay upright y’all☘️

Your posts are SO HELPFUL and I watch them all with much gratitude. 2nd text. Continuation of 1st text. Getting up was very difficult because I didn't have much leg and foot strength. If I had known about the 2nd video method I could gave grabbed enough cushions and pillows to build a staircase and push myself backwards and up onto the folding chair. (The chair I was moving and the chair with the gel cushion both swiveled and one also rocked so neither was good to get up on.) Unfortunately, falling put me into minor shock, then I panicked, and then I cried. I finally realized I had to calm myself before I could get myself up. So the presenter's advise to stay calm and assess the situation is right on the mark. I have one piece of further advice to help. Look around your home. Pretend you have fallen. Assess a location and look for ways to get up off the floor if you fall. Do this in multiple locations. See yourself falling and getting up in each location. Know ahead of time how you will do it. Get in the habit of keeping your cellphone nearby, just in case. I now have a rollator walker which has helped me keep my balance. I'm also able to walk better and longer so my legs are getting stronger. And if I get tired, I can sit on it and rest.

I’m nearly 75, had tin replacement 6 weeks ago, fell up the small step, my husband and daughter in law where with me and tried to help me up I could not lean onto my knew knee yet and my other leg is a bit weak, eventually I scooted across to the step rail and there is a chain hanging on other side I grabbed both and hubby pushed me up from behind, thankfully I made it up, the new knee is still a bit weak and I couldn’t get my legs to work, was a bit of a shock for me. I wear an Apple Watch and it picked up immediately that I had fallen, I said I had fallen but was ok. I think the watch is a marvellous idea for us oldies, we both have one each, it has a walkie talkie feature and works for quite a distance, you do need the phone nearby but if it’s stuck in a pocket etc the watch is quicker and easier to use for us.

I've had several falls, some quite painful. To me the idea of falling is very scary. Your recovery methods are excellent. My problem is that I can't crawl on my knees because its too painful, especially on hardwood floors. I've called 911 on two occasions. Advice: Always use a walker or rollator. Move slowly and carefully. Exercise your upper body to build arm strength. If you've got strong arms your chances of pushing yourself up are much improved.

I recently fell hard, but I couldn’t use either method because I had badly sprained my wrist. My knees are also bad and can’t kneel on them. I had to wait for my husband to get home. He tried to get me up, but failed, so he called 911. They were able to get me up and take me to the ER for X-rays and evaluation.

Great information for the elderly and those with balance issues. It's so important to not panic if you're alone and fall. Getting up again is doable as long as you focus on every movement and stay calm. The older you are, the more likely you are at risk of failing. Thanks for posting these videos, I'm glad I subscribed to your channel. Do you have any videos that show someone how to help a person get up from a fall when they weigh more than you? That would be very helpful. Bless you for your time and compassion. More people need to learn about dealing with falling no matter their age.

If you fall near a bookcase full of books, crawl or roll over to it and grab a lower shelf to pull the upper part of your body to a seating position with your legs still lying on the floor. Then, remove a book from the shelf, lean to one side and shove the book under one butt cheek. Do the same with a second book under the other cheek. You should now be sitting on two books that are side-by-side beneath your butt on the floor. Then, repeat the process with two more books. Keep doing this until the height of the books from the floor is the same height as a footstool. At this point, you might be strong enough to rest one hand on a higher bookshelf and pull yourself to a standing position. If not, keep stacking books beneath you until the stack is knee-high (aka the height of a chair seat). Note: Using larger books rather than smaller books works better. That's why it is beneficial to store large books on the lowest shelf of a bookcase. If you are prone to falling often, carry a charge phone with you at all times. However, it might be possible to roll or crawl your way to whenever your phone is located. Keeping your phone charging cradle on tables that are close to the floor will make it easier to reach the phone if you are still on the floor. Also, place the phone cradle near the front edge of the table instead of at the back edge of the tabletop near the wall. And if you really want to go the extra mile, keep a bag of trail mix or energy bars on your person or on lower shelves here and there around the house. Plus, bottles of water. If you are injured in a fall, you might appreciate them while waiting for help to arrive. Hopefully, you won't need to use the potty while you are waiting. Then again, wearing adult diapers might be an option.

02:07 This is interesting because most of we elderly cannot kneel due to the knees not being able to take the pressure for even a few seconds. However, it is easier if we have to, to be on all fours. The 'knee thing' is a trip. It is like one day you wake up and find out that you can no longer rest your weight on one or two knees on the floor anymore. It's so weird. It is a truly like, wait a minute...when did that start~?

When I worked in Florida, I began to believe that most seniors could just not bend their knees. Then I moved to Hawaii where even 90 year olds can do full squats. Clearly, not losing the ability to bend your knees has to do with the activities you perform in your 60's, 70's and 80's. If you never squat, then this really would be a lot harder.
@govindagovindaji4662
@govindagovindaji4662 Год назад
@@neurolasticinstitute424 And just what are they squatting for in Hawaii? 😆 It might speak to weather and barometric pressure too, then - that definitely deserves a checking out. Some days my knees are completely free for movement (not kneeling w pressure on them though) and other days they quite literally will not bend past a certain point.

The answer is don't fall! If you are a senior citizen and your balance isn't what it once was or if you have any kind of long term injury don't put yourself at risk! Use a walking aide! A walking stick(cane) a walker with wheels. Don't let other's opinions stop you. Your well being is far more important! People who mock those of us who use such devices have already had a fall- a mental fall!!!!

I had two falls about 6 years apart. I needed help getting up and I wasn’t thinking clearly. Fortunately my daughter rescued me both times. Looking back I didn’t have the traction I needed to get up. The soles of my footwear slipped on the floor as I tried to get up. I should have thought to remove my shoes but I didn’t. BTW, my shoes were not normally slippery; it was the additional pushing somewhat latterly that made them slip. Among other issues I have imbalance for past 12 years due to a severe head injury. PT helps me stay upright.

I just found your videos and subbed them. They are excellent. I scoffed at the simple 4 leg exercises until I tried them to find out how out of shape at 68 I am. There hard but work. Just doing the full set my legs are feeling it. I will incorporate them into my daily life. We take the simple act of walking for granted but when you retire and are no longer active everything just falls apart. Very grateful for this channel thank you!

You are so correct about no longer being active and everything falling apart. I heard a good tip recently about standing up and/or getting out of bed. The tip is that once you are in a standing position, count to 3 before beginning to walk.

I'm 71 years old and had I stroke this last February. The day I can home from the rehab facility I fell on the floor next to my bed. I have little feeling on my complete right side and could not get up. Also I had both of my knees replaced and it's quite painful to be on them. Needles to say it took a long time to get up because my right side is pretty much useless. What do you suggest? I am afraid to go anywhere or do anything because of falling.

I have had falls most of my life because of knee issues. Now with two knee replacements and one arm I have little strength in it’s hard to use these methods. What I’ve had to do recently is scoot on my bottom till I could get to my couch or bed then get pillows to put my knees on if I can’t get up using the couch or the bed because of my week arm then I use anything I can that isn’t as tall as what I’m getting up on and use that to put one knee on while I use the other to push myself up on the couch or bed similar to the second method but not using my arms.

Like a few who commented, having one knee replacement and one shoulder problem makes it difficult to get up after a fall. Am 76 & have had several falls last few years, mostly when out walking. No cushions ir chairs around made it scary and was thankful for people who came to help. Definitely carry a phone to call for help.

I believe that in this day and age, we should not always try to get up of a fall just in case some internal damages. Have a mobile phone always closed to you. Keep still and call for help. If no phone at hand, scream your lungs out until somebody hears you, day or night. I am 82 years old. God bless you all and keep you safe.

These are great instructions and perfect for someone capable of thinking through the steps, or following instructions from a helper. My mom's husband is in the throes of deepening dementia (I suspect Lewy Body because of his extreme rigidity) and it is all but impossible to get him to follow directions. She has had to call the squad numerous times.

I fell in the shower recently whilst using a supposedly non-slip mat and it scared me. Fortunately I fell on my side and not my back. The next thing I did was order a pair of non-slip shower shoes from Amazon which I use constantly. I am still careful but at least I do not dread falling which at my age of eighty eight could be catastrophic.

Well, I live alone and my knees both hurt so much that kneeling is out of the question. I've had to use my arms to try to get up whilst trying to place my bottom as near to the seat as possible. Then after trying to lift my butt up whilst fighting sliding off. It often takes me 10 minutes to use my arms to lift me enough to sit for a few minutes before I actually stand up. So, I am going to try the cushion method the next time I fall. Here's hoping it works. Thanks.
