It can be evolutionary, White skin can indicate less tanning which means he/she has to make very less efforts to find food ,overall healthy and abundant of resources. Dark skin is also caused due prolonged exposure to the sun from several generations may indicate subconsciously suffering to find food in sun.

one of the reason u would look better in ur fair version is due to more facial contrast , cause if u have dark features like hairs, eyebrows, etc then they wil pop out more if u have lighter skin than darker skin
