How do I get them NOT to do something? Like pouring chocolate sauce or paint in PUDDLES on the floor. I don't care about the odd lines of paint even on hardwood floors. But she's making large puddles. I've explained, made her help me clean up the mess(es), etc. It's to the point I freak out and yell! I know that it's not right and make situations worse. When I do it I'm at my breaking point. I have a lot of my own issues I'm working on that make controlling my emotions extremely difficult. I have given her an outlet by letting her paint her room walls, doors, closest, and even the windows. She even has a table that she can leave shaving foam on. I just don't know what else I can do.

Not correcting, but, I dont ask the question, "Are you ready?" I usually say something like, "Its time to color." I set a timer and take ipad or toy away. Throughout I show the timer to help reassure. I'm only a sped para, in no way an expert, but this has worked for me.

I'm going to try this. I already know that I default choose the lesser of two-not evils-weevils lol. It has backfired on me in the worst way. I literally am in the process of having to move to another apt this month. He's 4, recently diagnosed, and never sleeps, only naps 3-4 hours at a time. Right now, I'm trying to brush the almost dreadlocks out of his waist length blonde hair. I'm at the point of wanting to cut it off😖but I believe it's too drastic a change that I can't undo, he likes to flip it around when he's dancing, etc. That's my "In this moment" issue

I work with a child that has autism and even with the timer and a visual, when a preferred activity ends she attacks me. Any suggestions?
@Intothespectrumvideos
@Intothespectrumvideos 7 лет назад
Thanks so much for commenting! Can you give us more information? Is there something she doesn't like that happens directly after the preferred activity?
@williemullins6043
@williemullins6043 7 лет назад
She wants the activity to end when she wants it to end. I have used visuals as well as verbally prompted her that the activity would be ending. I make sure to tell her that the time frame is before the activity begins. When i count down and tell her.."Five more minutes" She yells at me and says.."Stop saying that!" I stopped saying that and now say before the activity....After "this" we are ingot do "that." She still gets upset and physically attacks me. This experience has made me wonder if becoming a BCBA is the right path for me?
@Intothespectrumvideos
@Intothespectrumvideos 7 лет назад
I am sorry to hear that! Some situations can be hard to figure out! Are you working with a BCBA on this case? Does your client have other flexibility issues? I am sorry for so many questions but it sounds like there is more going on!

Check out Hanley's materials on conducting a FA! www.behavioralobservations.com/session-1-greg-hanley-functional-behavioral-assessment/ Let me know if you already completed this and I'll try and send you more resources! :) Check this out to find out more about flexability: archive.brookespublishing.com/articles/ed-article-0911.htm I hope this helps!!
