Are your tomatoes having a hard time ripening in the heat? I've used this simple method and it really works.

I haven't ever done this, but I will give it a try. A dear friend from church told me to pick them and put them in a brown paper bag to ripen and that has worked for me.

I ordered our 4th freezer yesterday. None of our big box stores have any! But because of the food shortages currently we figured we needed to can and freeze more food. I'm currently getting way more tomatoes and other freezable stuff than we have storage for. But home grown food is way better than store bought!

Oh my gosh my heart went crazy when that branch dropped 😳 This was very cool thank you for the information. That stuff about the shoulder was a great tip. This is my first year with a vegetable garden and I've been staring at green tomatoes for a while and was wonderin lol. Prolly the 100 degree heat here in Northern California. Hope you are having a great summer!

Good video Lisa. My grandma used to take them, (even the dark shoulder tomatoes) and leave at least a 6 inch piece of the vine attached (most of them are in clusters) and hang them from the ceiling in her basement to ripen. Chuck

I've done that too, it really helps the tomato finish getting energy from the plant while it ripens inside.

Your video makes sense. We had a lot of bugs this summer, and too much rain. So picking the tomatoes before they turn red makes sense. One fall it got cold and damp here, so I picked all the green tomatoes, wrapped each one in newspaper, placed them in a shallow box, and put them in our basement. They ripened up, but if I didn’t check them every couple days, some would get soft and spoil. Thanks for the advice!

Hello :) We are in south louisiana here ! High heat and lots and lots of humidity ! I don`t mean to talk out of turn but we grow strawberries and or tomatoes year round ! When it gets hot , soon as they start to blush we pick em and wrap them in newspaper or put them in paper bags ! And keep them in a cool place ! they put off Ethylene gas and that helps them to ripen ! Check them often ! I really like this video ! We only have about 300 plants in the ground right now ! Just getting ready to start some heat set seeds ! Not too much longer :) We grow all tomatoes and strawberries under plastic with drip tape ! Another best bet for growing tomatoes is to grow them in partial shade in the hot months ! And never let them get thirsty ! Best to you and yours !

Well :) I re looked at this video ! Also watched a couple more of your videos ! I realized that I was talking out of turn ! I can clearly see you know exactly what you're doing ! I wonder what variety of tomatoes these are ??? They were big and beautiful ! They hold their own against any ! I grow mainly like 99 percent mainly beef steak types ! I really really enjoyed your video about the mint to help with the hornworms ! I try to be as organic as possible ! Though I do use a bit of synthetic fertilizer and now I'm using synthetic pyrethrum for the bugs ! Tomatoes right now are 8 -65 foot rows the plants are two feet apart right now this minute ! Too close :) We plant determinate varieties in succession ! We here plant our starts for tomatoes in mid march till october then strawberries october till they start playing out in about april ! Always a struggle to get , turned around ! Strawberries are easy maintence free almost ! We also grow cucumbers ,yellow and patty pan squash butterbeans ,White candy Onions , Bellpepper, Hot peppers . eggplant , field peas , okra , mustard greens then some cabbage broccoli and cauliflower ! Most of are Strawberries and Tomatoes ! We should be able to start picking tomatoes here very shortly ! Even though I write a book here I am not a good communicator at all ! Lastly and Mostly :) Honestly I was impressed because you do some of the exact same things we do ! I can just plain see you are well studied ! You have grew a plant to two :) We here can learn a thing or two from you ! Best to You and Yours :)

Thank you, Frank. I'm constantly learning. We all learn something new every year and just when we think we've got it down our weather does crazy things and proves to us it's always a learning process. Sounds like you have a great garden. I'd love to see pics. I grow a few beef steak, big boys and a few cherry such as Black Cherry and Ga Peach but mostly sauce tomatoes. I love San Marzanos for spaghetti, pizza and tomato sauces. I wish I had your garden space. I would love to increase my garden. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing. Hugs, Lisa

This is our first summer in the N Ga mountains. It's nice not to have to deal with the extreme heat we had in Augusta, but our cabin gets very little direct sun. We have one raised be that gets afternoon sun, and we put 4 tomato plants there. We have fruit, but they sure are leggy! I share this with the hubby. Love the support system you're using.

I love the N GA mountains. I'm in Fayetteville so I get more of the FL weather. It's been brutal this year. Usually leggy means not enough sun. The plants are stretching to reach the sun. Have you tried boosting them with fish emulsion? That might help them.

The Peeping Sprout I had to cut some of my tomatoes off. The bigger ones were taking too much energy that it was stopping it to turn red. I kept the stem and placed them in a glass of water. It’s helping it grow and the others are finally changing colours! The ones in the glass are still growing but hasn’t changed colour yet!

Hi, we're in Northern Ca in wine country in the mountains and it's been hitting well over 100 everyday. My larger tomatoes are really struggling to ripen. I have a Heatmaster and it seems to be doing OK, but my Romas and other varieties are not doing so well. I might have to try this. I have always waited for them to ripen on the vine and have been learning this is not really necessary. I appreciate this info, thank you! God bless

As long as the shoulders are light green when you pick them you wont be able to tell a difference in ripening on or off the vine. I truly believe most of the tomatoes sold as ripened on the vine are not. The centers are always too hard. Thanks for stopping by. Lisa

Hi Ed, We are still 2 days out for Irma and the wind is getting stronger. Our winds are said to be around 20 mph. I can't imagine what FL is going through right now with 140. I'm planning to remove the greenhouse cover today otherwise it will blow away. Not sure what to do with everything in it. It's where I store my garden pots and other supplies. It's overwhelming. Guess everything will get wet and blow. Next year I need to consider an additional shed just for the garden. I've removed all my statues, pots and other loose items so the house doesn't get damaged from flying debris. My garage is so full I can't move in there. Okay, time to get going again. Still so much to do. Hugs and blessing my friend, Lisa

Ice your soil don't go too crazy with it, about half a tray per plant, this is off course if you've had plenty of rain. If not just use cool water from the tap. You also need to get your soil temperature down. But not over water, don't use 40 or less degree ice water.

Or it seems like they make tomato's at first and then that's it. What type are those large ones? Are they heat tolerant types? I tried a lot of different types and none seem to do as well as those you have going. I do like those San Marzano's. I planted those before and they did pretty well. @@LisasWorld100 - Lisa, regarding that plant, how do you get almost all the flowers in a flower cluster to set fruit? I am in Richmond, VA growing Better Boy tomatoes in 10 gallon containers on my deck. I learned a trick to "agitate" the flowers when they are in full bloom to get them to pollinate, but I have seen many clusters that are not even setting 1 tomato. Why is this happening? Note: Temperatures here have been in the 90s just about all of July and I would say at least 10 days in August. Could this be what is causing flowers not to set fruit? Or is there something else going on in terms nutrients and fertilizing?

If you've ever typed in a product name you may be searching to purchase, if you notice, the sidebar then becomes an ad space for what you just searched for. Instantly companies are listed there trying to sell you their version of whatever you were searching for. I do try to be careful but there's a certain amount of stuff that will be tagged to us no matter how much we try to secure ourselves. It's sad! On your gardening efforts, the best thing you can do in the beginning is pay a visit to the county extension office. They should have free pamphlets covering everything from trees to fruit to veggies that are best suited for your area and lots of info on plants native to your area. They should also carry planting charts telling you the best time to plant each plant. You'll also find the stores will carry the best plants suited for your climate. Unfortunately you will find it's hard to garden there in the extreme heat during the summer so your gardening season will become the fall and winter. I'll study up a little more and see what help I can give you. I follow a few youtube channels out of Az and have learned a lot on gardening there. When will you move? Thanks for stopping by Ed. Blessings, Lisa

So good to hear from you Ed. Yes it's hotter than you know what there. I have a friend that lives there and said they've had record breaking temps. One weekend was 121. It's a different kind of heat than what we have in the south. Here you feel like you're in a sauna. My last extended visit to Az was in the early fall many years ago when temps weren't so bad. That motorcycle ride sounded like a beautiful experience. I'm so glad you're liking it there. I hope it's relieving any fears you may have about moving there. Hopefully your son will be able to visit you often. At least you'll have Pattie Ann close to help with the anxiety of the move. Enjoy your time while there and keep in touch please. xoxo, Lisa

?? First you say stores sell green ripened tomato’s, then you tell how to pick green tomato’s? Leave then on vine, they stay orange, then when you need on pick it put in window for 2 days, it will cherry red very tasty! No need to oversupply yourself.
