These calls were not allowed on cell phones until 2013. The a bill passed in Congress to allow them. Big problem is when you block a number from them. They call back with a different number. Which means cell phone companies are allowing them to purchase vast amounts of phone numbers. Cell phone providers should be held accountable for this.
They aren’t getting them from cell companies, they are spoofing caller ids. You can block a caller ID but not the true originating number. And they are landlines they call from, usually over seas in India.
It's annoying, but the system is geared these days around making us angry, everything they do, from politics to our personal lives. They want us to be angry all the time.
Surely tackling these pests is the responsibility of your phone company or law enforcement. We pay our phone bills and we pay taxes. It's about time these spammers were stopped or even put behind bars.
try it, call them and tell them about it, their answers are"we cant do anything because of those 1-800 numbers are not tracable or some shit, they dont want to do anything about it
The FCC...WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Don't hold your breath waiting for congress to act, they're too busy fighting between the 2 party's to be bothered by anything other than keeping their own. job.
Yeah, something went wrong with a scammer's robocaller and it kept calling me every 5 minutes all day long. Every new call had my area code plus the next 3 digits with a varying last four digits.
@@idmhead0160 That’s a common spoofing technique to get people to answer. Area code and prefix match. My personal favourite muck-up is when the incoming caller ID? Is my own phone number lol

Agree, they think it more likely you’ll answer if it looks like yours: your area code and first 3, then different, but they’ve hijacked that number from a real person. I called one back in the evening, got a real person who said they hadn’t called me, but we talked about how he was getting the same thing happening and it’s happened the other way too where someone called me asking why I had called them. I hadn’t. It’s not the phone number, it’s the scammers.
Pisces Boys boys your thinking too small here, What you do is bury them up to their necks near an ant hill and pour honey on their heads then walk away.
Arctic Fox they need to be the right species of ants. Nothing more terrifying than being covered by so many jack jumper ants, you can't even see skin. And why walk away? Why not watch the fun?
Twice I turned the tables on them. First time I was sweet as sugar, sounded fragile, said he sounded like my grandson, my husband would love to buy whatever and said I needed to ask my husband and will call them back the next day. He gave the phone number and turned around and called the FCC to report & file a complaint. The other one I chewed him out, told him he's a despicable person harassing and stealing people's money etc. He hung up so I CALLED HIM BACK, and every time he hung up I call him back till the last time he picked up the phone and said, "leave me alone you focking beech" ... it felt so good to hear that. That was 10yrs ago and it was almost like yesterday.. ah the memories
I had a similar experience except when I called back the guy got filthy and started yelling at me and proposing to put his you-know-what up my rectum. I played along and made cooing sounds on the phone. I told him I'm into kinky and had him go on and on. I guess he got frustrated thinking I would be unnerved, so he just hung up on me.
I usually cuss them out in multiple languages. Hopefully they can understand one or more of them. They have a tendancy to hang up & I call them back & inform them I will do it again until they apologize.
@@ceedub619cameraman3 FCC determines the number of complaints they receive in getting Comcast, etc to change or pass policies to force them to fix the problem. When telemarketers ask for me by name I tell them "That's my Dad. Hold on--I'll get him." And then just put the phone down. Sometimes they hold on for a really long time before they give up.
I had a friend that used to put her baby on the phone but she would listen to make sure nothing was said that was bad. And all they would hear is a lot baby chatter. LOL 🤣 they would realize it and hang up.
I also once put the phone next to the television and let them hear a horror movie... LOL 🤣 I think it was Friday the 13th and all you did hear is a woman screaming. LOL 🤣
@@insidebarrysmind The problem with this is you never know when it's gonna be a friend of yours in a jam, out of minutes, etc...calling from an unfamiliar number. Not to mention it's a bit elitist to think an unfamiliar caller is just some plebe calling beneath your lofty station as Grand Pubah Of My Own Self-Importance. It's not beneath ANYBODY to find out what it's all about before assessing whether the call is worth one's precious two minutes.
@@troyevitt2437 Why I don't own an answering machine. I love talking to telemarketers and robo callers! I also don't call to talk to a machine, so I would not want anyone calling me to have to either.
Thanks to my robo caller, I am now on the run, the robo caller informed me that a warrant has been issue for my arrest, so I am hiding out here on RU-vid.
They tried that with me that Social Security had problems with my account, I asked the person to give me my social security number and they could not. Did not help that I am receiving current benefits from Social Security!! They will NEVER call you, you might get an email or certified letter in the mail. The same goes for the IRS and Utility companies. If you should get an email it will be simple, it will say please come to the office, however usually it would be a certified letter showing a signature and requiring yours as well. I also state I am a retired law enforcement officer which is completely true, they hang up in seconds. Most of the time I let the call go to voice mail for them to leave a un transcribed message. I then block the number without speaking to anyone. All of the numbers I care to hear from are on my caller ID.
@@GM8101PHX You gave some helpful hints that anyone can use. I guess that robocalls appear when the city and state appear on the Caller ID display. When I get such calls, I simply press the Speaker button twice to "hang up" the call immediately. As a result, I have not been receiving lots of those calls anymore.
I got a call from someone saying they were from MSN and my account was over $300 overdue. I said well that’s a cute trick since I don’t even have an MSN acct. Don’t bother me again or I’ll report you to the police.
Nothing will change unless the "Do not call" registry actually start procecuting these robocallers. But they don't. I'd like to know where all the taxpayers money for this site is going.
i agree but it's imposeible to put in place. These scamming call centers get on the good old phone network using computers on the Internet behing a firewall. They can be anywhere in the world. There's no way to know who they are, where they're from and thus no way to block them. Voice mail and call filter is the only way.
The Do Not Call register is intended to stop legitimate businesses and social researchers from cold calling you. Scammers are criminals: they’re not legitimate and don’t care about following any laws or regulations. The only thing you can do to reduce the number of robocalls you get is to filter all your calls through an answering machine.
I usually say “can you hang on for a second, I’ll be right back “and repeat the process every couple minutes until they give up. “Can you hear me now?” repeated endlessly also works wonders.
The whole country needs to do things like this . If Fox News told them it was patriotic to waste the callers time , there would be enough people to jam them up all day.
I started giving this line, "Thank you for calling America. Your number has activated the automatic terrorist watch list. You are now being located. Thank you and have a good day." You can actually hear them panic. Such joy.
In the UK, I got a lot of robocalls. Frustrated, I got a BT phone with call screening. I can enter the numbers of people I want to get calls from, and they get put through without delay. Other numbers are answered by the phone (it doesn't even ring). The phone asks the caller to identify themselves, and if they do, only then does my phone ring and if I answer, the phone announces who the caller is and I press 1 to accept. I have not been interrupted by a single robocall since installing this phone 6 months ago. I love it.
I've been on a do not call list for years. Yet I still get robo calls. These clowns are violating Federal law. It's time for Congress to hold these scammers accountable. The American people shouldn't have to pay a dime for an app to "annoy" these people.
They are in India. They don't give a fig about your federal laws. Threaten to slap a 100% tariff on all goods coming from India if they don't clean up their act. Like the old joke about the donkey, first you have to get their attention.
I actually love robo callers. I love to ask them lots of questions and just talk in general to them until they get so angry they just hang up on me. It's hilarious.
My favorite response I copied from a friend. "The deed is done and there is blood everywhere." It took me several calls to say it without laughing but it is effective and many times you get a hilarious response.

FYI, these spam calls are almost all spoofed from REAL PEOPLES PHONE NUMBERS. So if you use this now, youll be totally fucking up some random, innocent persons day.
In my best 80s disk jockey voice I answer by saying, “Hello caller, you’re on the air. What’s on your mind?” Pause. “Caller, you’re live on the air. What do you want to talk about?” I almost always hear a click at this point.
Sometimes I do answer the phone and after the "hello, how are you?" I always ask them how's the weather in India, even if the call and accent is not from there!
Good one. When I did telemarketing back in the day, I heard so many lines like that that nothing phased me. They're moving on to the next call, but not actually disturbed at all.
I damn near eliminated all robo calls with the purchase of a single item for .99. I brought, a Damn Whistle!!! They'd call. I'd say hold on, and try to bust a mf ear drum out! I even called back several times and blew so much they 🚫 me. F'em. Now that's what I call getting the last 😅🤣😂.
I really love the "Your auto warranty has expired" calls. I make it a point to hold on until an agent comes on to try to sell me a fake auto warranty and I ask if my tricycle counts as an auto. They usually hang up lol.
If got time ask question give them all wrong numbers and tell them it's their fault for not typing it in right. I keep medical alert on line as long as possible then tell them just jerking them around to see how long keep them on phone no longer call
I like it when I get the calls about a "free pain relieving knee or back brace. I always tell them "I'm so glad you called. I have pain, but it's not in my knees or back, it's in my butt, and it didn't start until you called me. Do you have anything for that?" They usually proceed to hang up after that.
I received a call about those braces. I convinced the caller that I had no arms or legs and my phone was voice activated. Some more dialogue until he did not believe me that I was second base on my friends' softball team. He asked how I could play softball. I told him "I didn't say I PLAYED second base, I AM second base"!! He realized he had been duped and hung up. My step son heard it all on "hands free" call mode and was rolling on the floor laughing.
Not a good idea. I did something similar once and the caller upon realizing I was messing with him and children were near immediately launched into a vulgar rant. Luckily I had my finger on the hang up button and I quickly moved the phone away from the kids. They also had a heavy accent so no damage was done. Boy did I learn my lesson
I call the auto warranty service back, put them on hold while I call their number for a second time- then I merge the phone calls and put my phone on mute.. sit back and listen to them try to sell each other warranties and get really confused.
@@jodyguilbeaux8225 ... they made it unlawful for telemarketers to call you except for certain exceptions, but that's only enforceable within the USA. That's why these scammers can call you after asking to be removed from their list. They are not within this country.
I haven't had any since I got rid of the house phone. My mobile phone lists numbers as 'Spam Risk' or 'unknown caller'. If l don't recognise the number, I don't answer. Legitimate businesses leave messages so I can call them back.
These "free market" approaches are BS. They require the user to purchase a service which quite frankly is wrong. We need this to be legislated out of existence.
@Erushbass So what you're saying is that if someone comes to your house and dumps a pile of trash on your front lawn every day, you'll be okay with paying so they'll stop?
Legislation isn't going to do anything when the calls originate from other countries. I do believe legislation to make phone companies stop allowing caller ID to be spoofed would be helpful though.
The FTC has a do not call list. You sign up for free and it takes 30 days to take effect. It helps mitigate much of the calls...not all of them Many of the calls come from overseas but they represent companies in the US. That means they must comply with the FTC and FCC laws. If your number is on the do not call list and they call you they can be fined or you can sue them the latter is more difficult
It is illegal for robo calling to a cellphone. It's written in the FCC guidelines. But foriegn spammers don't care about US laws. So where does that leave us?
Messeresser rules only work on people who follow rules. The robocallers know that if they send out a million calls they might find 10 fools who answer.
The only thing you can do, really, is go vigilante. Of course, that would mean tracking down a call center in a foreign nation and doing what gun-obsessed Americans do best.
Same here. Also, my voice message is the generic one, does not have my name or voice. My landlines gets more calls than my cell phone, but they hear a message, "This subscriber has not yet set up their voice mail box". 🤣🤣🤣 Don't plan to, either! My carrier just started identifying "spam" on caller ID, too... very handy.
When ever I get telemarketing calls I just say," One moment, I`m just transferring you to the Waste of Time Department," and then put the phone next to the radio and walk away. I had one guy say thank you and when I checked he was still there 6 minutes and waiting....😂
Lol. I picked up phone and hit whatever number to talk to a human. I start to scream as loud as I can over and over again. If I am bored. I call that same number again and repeat the process until I am block. Work like a charm.
Interestingly, I don't answer the calls. They never leave a message on my home phone except the ones occasionally on my cell phone that are blocked by YouMail. I've used other blockers from AT&T and nomorerobo. Some seem to get around them by changing their numbers. Occasional I get a call out of the country like Venezuela. I have read it is not a good idea to pick those up b/c we could get charged..
@@rmxrider20032000 It is not effective at all because they will keep on calling you forever. When a foreign scammer calls I will always pick up and curse them out. Eventually they learn their lesson and take your number off their list.

Kudos to your dad, but many of us don't have that much time. A friend of mine is a working mother. She can't afford ignoring calls from unknown numbers because it could be something about her children. Answering robo-call is not only annoying, but get her reprimanded once because it was disturbing her co-workers who work in the same room. To add the injuries, her superior was also questioning her productivity due to too many interruptions in her work.

I like that idea, and I've done it myself in the past. However, I've also heard that if you DO answer, that verifies to them that your number -- which may have been picked out by a computer -- is an active residential or personal phone connection. Now if I don't recognize the number, or have it in my contacts, I won't answer it. As another commenter has suggested, if it's someone who legitimately needs to talk to you, they'll leave a message. Once the robo call ends, without answering, I immediately block that number. I've got lots of blocked numbers!
A fun way to deal with robocallers. I answer the phone and say “Hello”. Then the caller responds. I switch to speaking Spanish. They oftentimes put a Spanish person on the phone. Then I switch to speaking mock Chinese and sometimes they try to search for someone who can speak Chinese. Then I speak mock Russian. It’s fun, it ties up their lines and wastes their time. It’s also amusing to people around you who believe you can speak six languages.
Your over all concept is on target. If every one answered then and made them waste time they would all fail . I ask stupid questions or ask them to talk loud because my TV or music is to loud.
@@ogarnogin5160 I like that too. Anything to waste their time. I have no sympathy for robocallers. They are the equivalent of someone throwing a rock through your window with a note wrapped around it.

Robocallers are selling for companies. The companies (and all the executives in those companies) that pay robocallers should be severely punished. Robocalling could almost disappear overnight if congress passed extremely strict laws against them. But businesses own almost every officeholder. Until we ban all donations (bribes) to candidates from the rich and corporations we will continue to have these leeches intrude on our lives. Sadly, there are so many morons who have been duped into believing ‘money is free speech’ when it’s nothing of the kind. It’s bribe money to purchase candidates. I spearheaded a campaign against robocalling in my state. But it’s controlled by republicans. I kept being told that robocalling creates jobs. That is a lie. Like you said they’re machines in an empty room. Republicans believe it’s ok for your life to be constantly intruded upon. A robocall is the same thing as someone throwing a rock through your window with a note wrapped around it. Sadly, republicans and other corporate owned politicians support the rock thrower and to hell with us. It’s disgusting how people can continue to support republicans when they do absolutely nothing to help people.
ALWAYS seem to be receptive. ALWAYS be polite. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS waste their time. There are plenty of ways to do that. Take them down a long muddy road that leads them to nowhere. Be creative. Point is, WASTE THEIR VALUABLE TIME.
So I should waste my time to do this? I often hear of people doing this to get back, but never hear about them stopping when they (presumably) quit after realizing they are only losing even more of their time while accomplishing nothing. I suppose getting empty 'revenge' motivates some people.
@@chromolitho So, how long have you been one of these scam callers you seem to symathize with? It's not "empty revenge" at all. No "getting back". They're FRAUDULENT. They're Con Artists who lie & steal money from older people. They should be stopped.
One problem: Robocallers can spoof the number sent to your caller ID. Frankly we need to just ban telemarketers altogether. All we need is a law that says you can't call someone with the intention to advertise.
That won't happen. They have lobbyists who will make sure the telemarketers have a way of calling you. Even the current laws there are exceptions built it for certain groups as telemarketing is how they raise money.
Voters count more than lobbyists. All the money in the world means nothing if you don't get elected. Your choice is to vote for those who are on your side. If you don't vote you have no say in government policy.
Lobbyist work with the people who are currently in office. Lobbyists are the ones who get items put on pending bills. They will make sure what ever company they represent will be heard. This is where companies can get a bye for paying taxes as what had happened with that private school in Pennsylvania as an example of what a lobbyist can do.
yeah thats what i was about to say. spoofing makes this impractiacal. my friend at work doesnt know my dad at all. my dads number calls his phone. its a telemarketer spoofing my dads phone. they didnt even know each other. what are the odds of that?
When I call these people back it usually goes to the person who actually owns the number. The Robo callers are stealing our numbers and calling other people. How can we stop them from stealing our numbers? Think about it. If they're using our numbers, our numbers are being reported as spam and getting blocked.
This is a real problem. I put the numbers in my contact list and set the ring tone to "None", but now they are neighbor-spoofing. I'm sure I have now blocked legitimate numbers. This is bad if you use your phone for clients.
They're not actually using your number. They're using software which DISPLAYS a different number from their own. If your number is a private residential number it won't matter if it's reported as spam because anyone who you have given it to can still call you. (It might even reduce the nuisance calls you get!) However, if they "impersonate" a legitimate business number then that obviously is damaging for the business.
@@GonzoTehGreat If my number is 555-1212 and they choose 555-1212 at random and show people they are calling THAT number, then they ABSOLUTELY ARE using my number. @Builder Dex I didn't say it's ok because what they're doing is illegal but it doesn't have to cause problems if handled correctly. If someone tries to return their call and gets you by mistake just don't pick up: Two wrongs don't make a right!

There’s a common scam in my home of Canada where someone will call you claiming to be from the CRA (the tax agency, equivalent to the US IRS) insisting that you owe taxes and they’re going to send the police after you. You can really piss them off by insisting on service in French (which the real federal government is required to provide on request but a random scammer is unlikely to speak).
Yes. They always say I have 30 minutes. So I quickly say (in one long run-on sentence), "Ok..that'll give me time to take a shower, I haven't bathed all week..or should I just wait until I get to jail? Which movies should I pack? Snacks! I gotta pack some snacks! Hang on, I'll be right back...I forgot to write all this down.". If they're still on the line at that point..I just lay the phone down while I make back-ground noises, grunting, "dammit..where'd I put that scabies lotion. I can't leave until I find my scabies lotion.". LOL
Yep - and I LOVE to chat with the Indian person on the other end. I''ll ask them for badge number, ask if they know someone (completely made up) who works at their office, ask them if they've heard about that "hot new secretary that is a nymphomaniac" and even more. It's a wonderful time for me, but they don't make a dime!
If you try to return a call to the number it always says the number has been disconnected. Don't see how this service will help with those types of calls.
There's two kinds of caller ID. One is the public display, which is what gets sent to you by the caller. The other, usually only accessible by the police and 911, gets the number directly from the telephone exchange which can NOT be blocked or spoofed. A spammer calls a police station, his REAL number is given to them, not the fake one... This is why when an IRS scammer calls a police station by accident they hang up, fast. No I don't know how to get the real number, but I would love to know!
I allways answer and if it's a telemarketer I just start clucking like a chicken. But the trick is to have a tone and rhythm as if you are actually talking to them! I have also used this on crazy people following me while walking and it works everytime. The reaction is priceless. You're welcome everyone.
Exactly how many times have you practiced clucking when crazy people were following you? I'm thinking all of those spam phone calls have driven you insane, LOL!
A few years ago a friend asked if she could use me as a job reference. I said yes. So the prospective employer calls and after a short pause he asks for me. Thinking it was a telemarketer I said, "Nobody here by that name." He said, "Well, this is the phone number Kathy gave me. She gave me this name and number as a job reference." I explained that I thought it was a telemarketer, and yes it was me. We laughed at it, I gave her a good reference and she got the job.
I told one IRS scammer to go ahead and send the "cops" out to get me. I had no money and that is why I didn't pay my taxes, couldn't make my home payments and the bank was taking that back, and had no money for food. Told them it would be great to go to jail to get three square meals a day, an hour of workout in a day and not have to worry about medical bills. They were totally at lost at this and couldn't believe I wanted to be arrested. I asked them if they knew what time the cops were coming so I could have my toothbrush packed. I would have love to hear the conversation on the other end after we hung up....
I especially love the ones where they say that they are trying to find me a job. I tell them I'm looking for something in the "escort industry." They usually hang up soon afterward. LOL
If you wait and talk to them they will call even more. Never talk to anyone or they list you and give you to other scammers. You are marked as a customer.
I like to act timid at first, then as they make their sales pitch, I start to sound interested, almost excited. Use the word yes at increasing intervals. Yes, oooooo yes that sounds delightful. Yes Yes YES!!! DONT HANG UP!!!! IM ALMOST THERE!!!!! They never stick around for the climax...bunch of teases. Don’t do this while your out running errands. The post office labeled me a distraction and kicked me out. I’m still not sure if I’m allowed back.
No he's not and don't give him any of my tax money. The caller IDs on the robo calls are usually spoofed numbers that belong to legitimate customers of the phone company. He is now selling a product that will do to innocent people exactly what he is trying to stop the scammers from doing. He is now making the people with his app lawbreakers.
If we get any calls and don't recognize the number or the caller shown on "caller ID" we simply let it ring. They generally don't leave any messages unless it's some crap about being threatened by a computer voice if we don't call them back. We just delete those messages and don't worry about them.
My husband told his robocaller that he was on his way to work. He asked the robocaller to call him back at work, and then my husband gave him the number to the attorney general's office of our state.
When I added my phone number to the "do not call" list, the number of spam calls actually went up. All the scammers did was get the list, and start calling, from one country over.
We need to make a system that takes the call and then arrest the people doing it for scam calls are illegal why don't they try doing anything about it I bet the government get scam calls and there like ah end call someone else will take care of it.
I've still got my old "paper-boy's" metal whistle. When I get one of these spam calls from people claiming they are from Microsoft or others, they will get a real shock. Hope it ruptures their eardrums!
That guy from India has been calling me to inform me he's with Microsoft Customer Support and my PC is sending him alarms. I inform him that, "your mother gave my dog an STD". When he asks, "What is an STD" I hang up.
Where I live, they use spoofed numbers so it would not do anything to call back. They hijack people's real numbers so if you call them back, you are bothering an innocent third party. Those calls also use recorded voices, so talking to them is a waste of time because there is no one to talk to.
The phone companies need to start cracking down on the ones that spoof the caller ID. Just temporarily get rid of caller ID all together if that's what it takes, or force the phone companies to always use the origin of the call as the ID instead of something that can be overridden. Phone companies have no financial incentive to fix the issue though.
LOL at your assumption that all central offices have the capability to communicate the ID of the originating call. Spammers know where these exchanges are.
When I hear it's a scammer, and pull the phone away from my face a bit and yell, "Smith, get a trace on this line now! I'm going to keep him on the line while you trace the call!". For some reason, they always hang up when I get back on the line.
Sorry, that line didn't do anything except tell the scammer that they're not going to be able to scam you. You can just as easily tell them I know you're a scammer so I'm not going to talk to you or just hang up. It's the exact same thing. You haven't fooled anybody.
These days, as soon as the robocaller says, "This is Jeremy/Emily/Barbara/etc. How are you today?" I say, "Are you a robot?" It takes the AI a few seconds to formulate an answer, so I know it's a machine and I silently hang up rather than waste my time.
I got the "grandpa" call yesterday ! I played the kid for a few minutes and had to leave for an appointment. I did tell the kid that I had just scammed him for almost five minutes. Loved it !
I Europe, I rarely got spam calls. I lived both in The UK and The Netherlands, but in Canada, literally within days of having a number the calls started. The thing I hate here is even though I have signed up not to be called, I can still get calls from certain organisations - this is so f’ed up, for me no calls means “NO CALLS!”
A friend got a call advertising a timeshare. They were phoning from way across the world and he kept them on the line for an hour and then said he already had 3 timeshares and he didn't want another one.😂
