Ive always enjoyed paper pictures and glue. I started a book in 2017 a couple of holiday memories then changed to a Christmas book. That was followed by 2 more Christmas books. Then pictures from an English publication called Grace. That eventially ceased to be published. I then subscribed to Evergreen, lots of pictures about UK (I live in Britain). Tv personalities, TV shows, places. That ceased publication in 2022. Then from last October I get another Magazine put by for me in a shop all W H Smith . This England. Also have Daphnys Diary put by. Lots and lots of pictures. Ive introduced a friend to glue booking, she comes round on a Monday morning. I call mine scrap books, started on my 4th book this morning. I also make my own monthly journals. I started daily journaling 2000, just boughf a page a day diary offics style colour harc backs. 2016 I bought ond with a soft pretty cover for a change. My husband passed away in May 2017 losing his battle with Cancer. In June 2017 I discovered Fauxbonichi a take on Japanes Honbonich decorative journaling. I carried on with the ciary but more decorative. 2018 to start of 2023 I bought notebooks with metal coil binding and 2 months in each nofebook. From May last year I made monthly ones. 12x9 brown envelopes covered with copy paper. Pages from bought exercise books, and sewn in with 3 pamphlet stitches. So enjoyable.

Thank you so much for sharing your creative journey with me Barb. You are obviously having a ball with gluebooking! You’re not wrong in calling them scrapbooks; that’s exactly what they were called for decades before modern scrapbooking “stole” the term. It’s great that you have a friend to craft with; it’s always more fun with friends. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your husband, I hope creating gives you some comfort. *hugs*

Idea for those people who are having a hard time picking a theme. They can write out a bunch of themes and draw one out of a hat and go with it! Backgrounds can be done with an entire piece of wrapping paper or even paint with acrylic craft paint, black gesso or even soft chalk pastels. Also adding a frame around the images with washi tape , fabric or paint always adds to the look of the page and thinking about placing images in threes. Just some easy hacks. This is a great video for beginners with some great ideas.I really like the themes you use.
@JenniferDurdleArt
@JenniferDurdleArt Год назад
Wow, those are all excellent ideas Karin, thank you! I especially love the putting themes in a jar idea; I’ve done that in the past with journaling prompts and it’s a lot of fun. I may have to do that and use the theme to say do one page in a Gluebook. Or, as an extra challenge, pick a few themes and use them all in one collage image. Thank you for the inspiration!! 💡❤️

Your glue books, or any glue bk, seem like art journals sans writing. I don’t think one has to have any writing in an art journal, because the art is expression. Yours are quite beautiful and VERY artistic! Wonderful, really!
@JenniferDurdleArt
@JenniferDurdleArt Год назад
Thank you! Yeah, some people are very strict about what constitutes which type of journal, but I do like to blur the lines often, and don’t really care about the “rules”. Although, I do have one exception: I do have one journal I think of as my “art” journal, because that’s where I do my mixed media work that involves wet media like paint. Not because of a need to have it all in the same book, but simply because the paper is thicker so it holds up better.

Yes they were called scrapbooks!! So glad someone said it. Love my scrapbooks. I’ve done this since I was a kid. Now with the “new” idea of using an old magazine as the scrapbook. But I use as my scrapbook journal coz I use the headings and photos in magazines to go with the journaling I’m doing. It’s woooo much fun and it just seems to work out for me with the way I’m thinking and want to journal about with what’s in the magazines headings and pictures. Of course I use beautiful papers to cover what I don’t want and use other pictures and words (to make sentences) as well. Pull out or glue pages together I don’t want. Loving the new way of journaling of how I feel and my thoughts. I do an art journal with all my drawings as well ❤

It’s great that you’ve found new ways to enjoy your scrapbooks, incorporating the images in the magazines into your journaling! It’s great to have you along for the journey ❤️

Hi Lisa! I have been saving pictures from magazines and books for years, so I’m fortunate to have accumulated quite an extensive collection of images to work with. My biggest source of magazines would be from Facebook marketplace. I watch for magazine lots; occasionally someone will list a whole box of them for free or cheap. I also check thrift stores, but only occasionally buy really nice ones, or vintage ones, or large ones there, as they can be expensive, so I want them to be worth it (for example, today at Value Village I bought half a dozen Florida Design magazines, at $1.20 each. Not a price I’d normally be willing to pay for a magazine, but they’re huge! And they have a ton of gorgeous images in them, so I felt they were worth it). I also buy kids books, either at thrift stores or garage sales, as they usually have either amazing photographs or gorgeous artwork. If I were you I’d make a post on Facebook letting people know you’re looking for magazines, and/or let your closest friends and family know, and get them to keep an eye out for you. You never know; they could come across a neighbour getting rid of a stack, or find some at a yard sale for cheap. Good luck with your hunt!
@TheBeccajb
@TheBeccajb Год назад
Thank you for this video. What is the difference between glue book, art journal and junk journal?
@JenniferDurdleArt
@JenniferDurdleArt Год назад
Good question! Gluebooks are just images glued onto pages. Art journals usually involve some sort of media: paint, markers, etc. junk journals are so called because when they were first created, they were made out of trash, like junk mail. Now they more mean a journal you put anything into (like a smash book): your memorabilia, maybe an art journal type page here and there, writing page here and there. That being said, while gluebook and art journal definitions are pretty well agreed upon by everyone, junk journals can really vary. From made from trash and eclectic, to made completely from digital kits to look clean and uniform.

If you’re in Canada, check Staples. Not sure if their sales are Canada-wide, but mine has a 4 pack of the Hilroy scribblers on for $0.79 until Tuesday! And they say stitched, so looks like maybe they changed from staples, which would be an added bonus.

Glue books are new to me. Because you also make junk journals do you cut the glue pages when done to make tags etc?
@JenniferDurdleArt
@JenniferDurdleArt 8 месяцев назад
Hi Kathryn! I do not cut them up, as I love just looking through them, it brings me happiness. I do however occasionally make master boards, which are very similar, gluing bits and scraps of paper to a sheet then cutting it up to make tags, atc backgrounds, etc. I use paper from my scrap bin for these tho, and save the “good” images for my gluebooks. It’s a great way to use up the ever-growing scrap pile.

whats the difference between a glue book that i seek out ephemera for and one i only glue in things i happen to collect. so if i did a star trek book. as i slowly collect tickets to movies, stickers, con tickets, cards, comics etc, i glue them in. that would be my actual personal ephemera. which is different than looking for cool pictures online, printing them and putting them in. what do you think? is one then a smash book? or a scrapbook without the modern fancyness?
@JenniferDurdleArt
@JenniferDurdleArt 2 года назад
Great question. There's a variety of different opinions on the names of all these different types of journals. In my opinion, the type you're talking about (personal memorabilia/ephemera), I would call that a smash book, or a junk journal (I call mine a junk journal, only because this is what I heard it called the first time I discovered them). But, honestly, it would still qualify as a glue book too IMO. The lines between what makes one style of journal fall under whichever category have definitely blurred, and honestly you can call it whichever name you like, and you don't have to limit it to one type of ephemera. I'd probably just call it my Star Trek Journal, no need to categorize it further; and say I drew a Star Trek picture, I'd put that in the same journal, even though that would be art I've made, and usually I put my drawings in a separate "art journal". Hope this made sense, lol
