How to go about a lathe CNC conversion with no lathe modifications.

In this video, I show how I went about creating a lathe CNC conversion with a difference.
Instead of modifying the lathe, I built a two-axis CNC table that sits on top of the lathe bed. This technique avoids the usual removal of the z-axis lead screw and the subsequent loss of thread cutting capability. It also avoids the need to machine the underside of the cross slide to accommodate the ball screw and nut.
The CNC controller used is LinuxCNC.

Excellent idea. I ran across this video while looking for examples of CNC conversions as I prepare to convert my lathe. I enjoy working the lathe by hand for large and simple parts, but I need a CNC component to produce small and accurate parts. You've presented an elegant solution! Thank you!

Excellent example of looking at something differently. One more benefit of that design is it's easily transferable to another lathe.

I'm nearing completion of a "Spruce-up" of a Myford Super 7 that my father bought new, over seventy years ago. It has just come home again after twelve years of storage in less than dry conditions. There are a number of RU-vid videos that show CNC conversions on machines like mine, but I am reluctant to do too much alteration to this very original lathe, and your solution is really excellent. Many thanks for making the time and effort to share your ideas. :o)

This is a great idea! This makes sense as an add-on piece for all the plain-turning bench precision lathes that are floating around in the classified ads, the ones that are typically 100 years old and use bolt-down cross slides that float anywhere along the bed. I don't know why RU-vid didn't point me here a lot sooner.

Thanks so much for sharing! I've recently started designing a similar concept, and finally thought "I bet someone else has had this idea before." Thanks for letting me skip the "wrestling with Fusion 360" stage of the project and get straight to ordering parts!

... I just measured t-slot bed to center height and it seems like my lathe (Sieg SC4) is quite a bit smaller than yours, so it turns out I will have to spend some time fighting Fusion, but at least there's an excellent starting point to refer to!

That is a fantastic solution to get the best of both worlds. I would like to have a cnc lathe for doing the work I would normally have to grind form tools for but I like running my machine manually for the rest of the operations. This is perfect, I hope you don’t mind me copying your idea. I have a similar size lathe as yours so lots of room to fit a small cnc capable attachment. 😬 subbed.

That's excellent! Manual and when you want to CNC a part, just plonk the CNC bed on. Would love a more detailed video on this - what speed pc, BOB etc. I know even with motion controllers, Linux CNC still controls all the movements etc., but still not entirely clear on best interfacing boards for it.
@girvaw

Thanks. The PC requirements for LinuxCNC do not appear to be too critical. Until recently, I used a 15+ years old i686 32 bit machine running Debian Wheezy. It ran fine using the built-in parallel port to drive the steppers. Due to unsupported packages on x32 I recently replaced the motherboard with a 10+ years old i7 x64 board. This board doesn't have a built-in parallel port, so a PCI parallel port was added. This revealed some compability problems. I eventually settled on a NetMos parallel port. Unfortunately the outputs were unable to drive the opto-isolated stepper driver inputs, so I ended up constructing a buffer using 2 x 74HC541 octal buffers. Works fine now on Debian Buster.

THIS IS OUT STANDING.i 82 years old and have been running manual lathes since 1953, I ran the first Mazak cnc lathe in St louis in 1977. Retired useing a Mori seiki cnc with live tooling. NOW I HAVE MY GAREGE SHOP. I have 1340 manual lathe with every imaginable tooling.,,5 chucks 80 plus piece 5 c collett ect, ect. Nothing beats a small enginne lathe for the eveyday jobs.BUT I REALLY REALLY MISS CNC CAPABILITY. I AM INSPIRED TO TRY THIS..Have you thought about adding threading capabilitys?
@girvaw
@girvaw 5 месяцев назад
Hi. Thanks! This has been an extremely useful tool. I did a significant upgrade to it last year, replacing the aluminium plates with 15mm steel plates. It's now extremely rigid and very precise with all linear rail mounting surfaces having been surface-ground. It can already do thread-cutting: See my video on the making of a spindle encoder.

Curious as to how you still like it! And is there any way to add tailstock support? What do you estimate the swing would be if you put it on a 10x lathe? I make a lot of pens and this would be perfect for me... I just really need that tailstock support unfortunately!
@girvaw
@girvaw Год назад
This has been a very useful project that I use relatively often. There are a couple of ways to use the tailstock. If your lathe bed is long enough, take the tailstock off and put it on the chuck side of the carriage. You would also want to position the z-axis stepper off to the side to keep it out of the way of the saddle. Another way is to make your own saddle that is fixed to the CNC table. Good luck!
