NEVER file your nails in a saw motion like seen here. The fibers that make up the nail are made in a cross-hatch pattern, and saw motions break the nails. ALWAYS file in one direction.

It actually depends on how rough the nail file is. If it’s not super hard, is fine.

@@cyndlbrown7717 It's still healthiest to file in one direction. It might not hurt the nail AS MUCH but the single direction is ultimately safest.

Yeah filing back and fourth can weaken your nails and break and split them. Always go easy on the sides of the nails as well. Always one direction.

Thanks for this video. Super helpful! I always get corner breaks no matter what I do, so I've been trying to figure out a good shape to do that will allow my nails to grow longer without so many corner breaks, but I'm always too scared to file them different and mess them up totally. Gonna try this your way since you've explained it and demonstrated it so well!

Asiya Nadeem my nails grow through naturally into the square shape but I find that the oval and the round shape are much more attractive and feminine. Just bear in mind that if you are a nail biter or do not like to keep your nails very long then I would recommend the square shape because your nails do not need to be so long. When they are oval they have to be grown longer to then file down into the shape. Xx Merry Christmas Eve. I have been growing my nails out for 2 years now but I recently cut them down and in just 1 week they are above my finger - but I know when you do it for the first time they do take a long time to grown out. Sorry for the long message x

This was so helpful! I have wide flatbeds and I always want a round shape but the they never get it right at the nail shop. From now on I will be filing my own nails before I go!

Thank you so much! Because I naturally have really flimsy nails, I'm kinda forced to keep them short ('cause whenever I try to grow them out they break really easily). But I knew I still wanted my nails to look nice but every video I looked up was about long nails so I was starting to get a little discouraged. But then I found this video and I was like, Finally! Thank you for sharing your tips on short nails!

I like the roundness at 3:13, the one you don't like. But I love this video because I understand better how to get them round. I always ended up making them square but just a lil rounded on the corners like square/oval I guess. Which isn't what I wanted. Idk why it was so hard to do round but this video helped me way more than others. Thank you!

How do you make your nail plate (the pink part of the nail) become rounder? Because I’ve always had square nails my nail plate was either straight or has an inward curve and it doesn’t fit with my round nails
