Papers to grade. IEP paperwork to do. Lesson plans. Unruly students. Toxic teachers. Not enough time. Not enough energy.
This week I focused on going from having my ass kicked to kicking ass. (** not actually kicking ass, that would be illegal, but you get what I'm saying.
Enjoy!

Love what you say at the beginning. Teachers helping teachers. It is too easy to judge others because of the high-pressure situation we are in as a teacher. We are always compared to other teachers with grades and data. Spreading teacher love is so important which why channels like yours and mine are so important to simply share positive ideas. Keep up the good work.

Going on the offense is such a great idea. It can become routine to always be nagging the "repeat offenders" in our classroom who don't pay attention/always have messy work, etc. Definitely going to try the "reward" strategy and see if it helps. Thanks so much for these videos.

thank you for your inspiring ideas. the sticker idea is a huge success my 8th grade students loved the fact I gave them stickers from the cornflakes box (and fight over the "frame sticker" - what's left after al the stickers are used up..) thanks for helping me bring back fun into a difficult class

Oh my god this is my first time watching and I love you!! I’m in an education program and I’m going to be teaching elementary soon. My long term goal is to get to be a high school teacher so I’m loving this. The background music was a wonderful idea. I’m saving this video and I can’t wait to use these ideas! Thank you!

You're final message is so powerful- I've definitely connected with students over family stuff- some things I'm scared to bring up (like being trans) but I know that'd be powerful too, but one thing that really surprised me how often kids really connect to it is that I'm dyslexic, I find spelling, and even keeping my numbers straight in maths (despite being a maths teacher), really hard. I will just openly say 'I'm dyslexic' or if a kid makes a mistake I say - 'that's okay, I struggle a lot with that too, focus on the process, that's why working is so important' it's not some massive life trauma but it's something that effects me daily and it's great that it can be used to connect with kids that also struggle even if they're not dyslexic.

I had a dyslexic math teacher. She was very passionate about math. On the odd occasion, she’d write the numbers in the wrong order or misread something. She could also read and write upside down, so she’d come give us feedback while standing in front of our desk and make notes without flipping the paper. That was pretty cool. Not sure that was related to her dyslexia though.

Agree with offense, great topic. Sometimes it is so hard to verbalize ideas that work in the classroom, because often times it is a "flow" and a series of actions versus ONE thing you decided to do.

I love your classroom setup so much! I would love to set up a flexible classroom library such as yours. Would love to see you do a video on how you set up your classroom and why, including all your lighting fixtures and the hanging books! Thank you for all that you do, by far the best teaching videos I have ever come into contact with.

What you are doing is disrupting the cycle of anxiety that most young people feel. Anxiety causes most of the acting out and oppositional behavior we encounter. Do you have a class you can't seem to control? Try giving them easier work to do. All the sudden about half of the problems will disappear. When you joke around and make 'breaking the boredom' part of your agenda you are distracting your students from obsessing about their fears. This makes them available to learn. When we deal with other teachers, we have to remember to do the same, because just like Reynolds, they are anxious about their wives, children and their work.

Nathan, you make some really great points here. I would add that reminding students constantly that you care really helps. Also taking the time to build relationships and listen to students gives them an outlet that they might not have anywhere else. Just listening to students can help a great deal. Thanks for the work you do. ☺️

Can you please do a video for student teachers or teachers in general who are having a problem with classroom management ? I’m having a tough time trying to get kids to listen to me. I get I’m not their teacher but the more I’ve called kids out, the more push back I get. I’ve tried so many different strategies and it works for one day then it doesn’t work after that

Hey, I need ideas of how to react to children (6th graders) not caring about school. I do have a good rapport with them, but they are not willing to try. I am reaching my limit on trying.... I don't want to stop caring about their education, but their unwillingness is breaking my passion for wanting to teach them!

Great video as always. I especially love the bit about turning negative self-talk into expressions of power. It feels good to find ways to use my shyness and social awkwardness to connect with kids who feel the same way. I'm taking baby steps, but I AM making a little progress.
