In this driving lesson video I will show you the correct way to take the second exit to go straight on a bigger roundabout, I will explain the rules about lanes and signals and give you lots of tips and advice to increase your confidence at roundabouts. It is important to be aware of the rules on position and signals and in this video I will clearly explain that.

I've no idea on routes for Dún Laoghaire, you need to be a good capable driver on all types of roads, not just specifically on a route in Dún Laoghaire.

About the last tip… I’ve had it a lot where other drivers will enter the left lane before it is permitted (entering while it’s still a bus lane) preventing me from entering when it actually becomes a left lane. So this tip would be great for those situations too!

I had exactly the same situation yesterday, couldn't go to my left line, ended up on the right line and couldn't leave the roundabout on the left because there was a car on my left 😢 I nearly crushed 😢 This video explains a lot .

Hi Dane, if a roundabout is busy and I won’t be able to pull off anytime soon - do I stay I first gear and break? Or stop completely doing hand break etc? Thanks for your help

If you where to take 3rd exit which now has 2 lanes on it with one lane filtering to the other, is it better to filter over to the left lane if it is clear or continue in the right until the filter arrow? Different opinions

I'd say stay left if you are going to lose a lane anyway, but it depends on the situation, I'd have to see it first. But anyway there may not be one correct answer - it's possible that you could take either lane. It may not be as black and white as you think.

2:10 I just followed a police van that did that...twice...but they started out on the right lane... straight over at roundabout, 2 lanes on approach going to one lane exiting...indicated right (in right lane) then indicates left and exits straight over pulling into the lane I'm in! Was tempted to let them hit me to prove a point!

I see a lot of people do it. I was taught on that roundabout type with no markings...left lane is for left and straight...right lane is right only. I know if the straight exit has two lanes you can use both to go straight but those situations are clearly marked. You can't assume the exit will have two lanes

Hi dane thanks for the video. I have a question. If i am taking 2nd exit and there is bus lane on my left should I proceed on right lane or left lane. Even if bus isn’t processed at same time. What should i do. ?? I hope you get my question. Thanks

Probably best to stay away from the bus lane but it depends on the signs and markings. What do you mean "if the bus isn't processed?

Hi Dane, what should I do if approaching a roundabout that has no sign, intending to take the 2nd exit which is at position just past 12 o clock? Around position 12 05 on the roundabout.Should I approach in the right lane

Hard to say for sure but probably the left lane would be best.

What if the right lane and left lane can go straight? It's where i get confused. My instructor said i did it seriously wrong, both lanes could go straight but i was in right lane. I continued in the right lane didn't indicate. My instructor was in left lane (was on motorbike) so when i passed the first exit. I put on my left indicator, then did a head check before moving over. Is this still allowed? I don't see how i'm allowed to do this as road markings say it's premited as right lane could also go straight.

It's not that difficult, stay in the left lane going straight unless signs or markings allow you to do otherwise.

Hi Dane for the last tip what should you do if you accidentally end up on the left lane but needed to be on the right lane to take the 3rd exit? Would you do the same thing where you go all the way around the roundabout and then exit it in the desired lane?

Depends on the situation, probably stay in the left lane and take the wrong exit. The tester will adjust the route.

Hi Dane, just curious... 5min 48 sec you said on the video: "and then you come up like this, now you can go THIS ONE.." and you have pointed finger (5min 49sec) on the line which can be used by car on your left at the same time. It is dangerous, isn't it? Shouldn't you go middle line on the roundabout and then exit? Can you explain? Thanks. B

On that example the markings indicated that either lane could be used, important to check mirrors just to be aware of others.

I have my driving test in 2 weeks time and I’m trying my best to prepare for that a lot of your videos have helped out big time! My only question is for example if the road marking is showing me to stay in the right lane to proceed straight on but straight is past 12 o clock should I still indicate right then left or is it completely fine to go around the roundabout then indicate left when exiting the roundabout?

You must obey the signs and markings, if the sign shows the roundabout exit to the right of 12 o clock then signal right and left.

I was just wondering about giving way on a roundabout I know that you give way to the right but my confusion lies with what to do about the cars directly in front of you on a roundabout, in my head they seem to neither be to the left of right of me so who gives way? An example I have come across when driving is the approach on the roundabout at the top of summer hill, do I give way to the car coming down the road from the gaa stadium or do I go if no cars are on my right?

Depends on how committed you are and the car straight ahead is. There's no simple answer as it depends on the situation.

Dane, question for you, i know this is an old video. If the first exit is straight ahead, should you signal on approach to the roundabout or halfway through it? I have a full licence for 6 years but i always indicate left half way through the roundabout even though the exit is straight ahead? Thanks.

Most roundabouts have a speed of 15-20 mph and for the purposes of a road test, you would be overcautious if you didn't accelerate and therefore you would fail the test because being overcautious can lead to an accident.

Hi Dane I just wanted to ask you a few questions in relation to driving straight on a roundabout - I understand that (unless stated on a roadsign) one must be in the left lane when going straight. My question is, do I indicate to move into the left lane on the lead up to the roundabout? And if yes, do I turn that indicator off as soon as I am in that lane (to avoid confusion that I might be turning left on the roundabout)? I have read and heard different opinions on this, and have found that oftentimes cars much further behind me will get into the left lane before the broken white lines, and thus before me, and so leaving me in difficulty to get into the lane as there are in the way. What do you do in such a situation where you are turning into the left lane where the white lines permit it but there are other cars behind you in that lane preventing you from doing it closely as they have turned in there before the lanes have broke? I have also found that a lot of cars will drive straight on a roundabout but in the right (inside lane), why do so many do this? I have found that in such an instance, as the car behind me is in the right lane and I am in the left and we are both going straight, they often speed up and cut me off from entering the 2nd exit which I find a bit dangerous. You should not have any need to indicate that you you are starting in the left lane, keeping left is the default position and there is no need to indicate left in case people think you are going left. Just gradually keep left before the lanes open up. As for other cars it's just bad habits. Not much point in wasting time worrying about things you can't control.

I should have previously mentioned that the roads I'm referring to have bus lanes on the left, and then have the broken white lines for normal cars to enter near the roundabout. But oftentimes, normal cars are pulling out in the bus lane, blocking me from entering the lane upon approaching the roundabout, so in this instance where there are bus lanes I was wondering if indicating briefly to show I'm entering the left lane is required? Thanks so much!!

I'm not sure about the layout of that junction as I'd have to see it first but a short indication would probably be a good idea.

I am just trying to clarify this as the roads near my test centre are filled with bus lanes leading up to roundabouts and I am concerned about how to safely cross into the left lane (to go straight on the roundabout) when other cars/buses are already coming up that lane.

The examinator? Is that a cross between the Examiner and the Terminator? Its unlikely he'll get you to do a u-turn on the roundabout.

Let's say you're approaching a roundabout to go straight, but there's a large vehicle that's either already stopped on the right hand side of the entrance or pulls up beside me while I'm waiting (assuming it's a busy roundabout). I can't see past him, so presumably I can't go. Entering the roundabout blind would be unsafe. Can I edge forward to see past him? Does a large vehicle pulling up on the right have automatic right of way? I have this same problem on junctions. I pull up to a stop in order to turn left, and a fellow driver pulls up to turn right. He's blocking my view to the right, and I'm blocking his view to the left. What to do?

When going straight at a mini roundabout, where it pretty much is a straight road (there is no actual left turn anywhere) do you still have to indicate left?

It's no harm to indicate left as you exit - do so when half way through the roundabout.

Its now a norm for drivers in Dublin to use the wrong lane for taking the 2nd exit ( going straight) on the roundabout. They end up in the lane which is not a bus lane and the drivers on the correct lane then wait to slide right ahead.

Depends on the road markings, sometimes you could have 2 lanes on the roundabout but only one when exiting and in that case keep left.

@@DaneTygheletsdrive the 3rd exit is past 12 o clock.I take the right hand lane approaching the roundabout and I pass the 2nd exit I then indicate left do i maneuver into the left or right of those two lanes exiting the roundabout?I have it in my head that as Im in the right lane going around the roundabout that I have to keep to the right lane exiting it.☺

Which roundabout are you referring to? If its a roundabout that I'm not familiar with you'll have to obey the signs and markings. I can't give you a simple answer if I haven't seen it.

Dane if your car cuts out do you fail the test?

no you don't fail but if you cut out and panic and roll back 5 metres you will fail, it's not cutting out that is the problem, it's how you recover. So my advice is to use handbrake, re-start the car and just move on, you can easily recover.

Always looks terrifying but I've had to go around a few roundabouts similar to this. My mam always says that once you know you're in the correct lane, just follow the road markings on the right side of your car and don't go over them. Obviously this won't work in every situation (e.g. if you were in the middle lane and were taking the second exit) but it's great the first time you go around these roundabouts.

Practice makes sense of it. Make sure you keep an eye on the mirrors when leaving the roundabout.
