How should you grip your pickleball paddle? The continental grip is the most versatile grip you can use in pickleball. In this video we discuss the pros and cons of the continental and western grips in pickleball and show - hopefully - why the continental grip is the better option. At the end of the video we give you a tip for sticking with the continental grip.

Thank you so much for this video! I am relatively new to pickleball and have just changed from the eastern grip to the continental and my net game has improved!

My preference is using Eastern or Semi Western grip for Forehand at he baseline though I also use the Continental gripfor drop shot. I will use the Eastern grip on the reverse rotation for backhand topspin. Changing grip at he baseline is easy as there's more time. I only use the Continental grip near the kitchen.

Sounds like you can do it without it negatively affecting your game.

Handshake grip or Continental grip is the best option for racket grip. Using the same grip, there is proper technic to defend fast driven ball without twisting arms which is taught in badminton. And Last second switching into Western grip or Eastern grip are for advance players...it will take a lot of practice to execute the shots properly...it shall produce top spin onto the ball either forehand or backhand is use. Those two grips i used effectively for low Groundstrokes to keep my ball return low.

I’ve been playing for 6 months and have been holding the paddle as you show. Recently a more advance player approached me and said I was holding the paddle incorrectly and hence the reason I pop up the ball often. He told me the “V” is supposed to go elsewhere. I tired it that way and my shots are significantly closer to the net but I have also lost strength on back hands. I’m still confused on what’s the best way.

Popping it up is because your grip needs to be a 2 out of 10!

Yo new Pickleball player here. It’s awesome. I use the continental grip, my only question is that you don’t need to move the paddle in your hand when you do a backhand right?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 2 года назад
That is correct. One grip for both sides. Hope this helps and welcome to the game.

Your videos are so helpful, thank you! I def use the cont grip at the kitchen line but I do change it slightly if I'm hitting a ground stroke. You're in Sanford right? Do you know any places that play any day around noon to 3 or 4pm? Or Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat nights? Like 6pm-10pm? I play in Mount Dora Tue/Thur nights but really want to find some folks who play in the afternoons and nights. I'm not a morning guy lol, I start the day with coffee at 11am haha. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. And keep up the great work with the channel You have another vid on paddle taping... I had no idea the wrap direction determined dominant hand lol! I had to redo one of my paddles after I saw that. Thanks!

One thing I like to point out about the continental grip: it got its name from the European Continent where the grip was used on grass courts. If you've ever played tennis on grass, the ball doesn't bounce up much (especially after some rain!). The continental grip is great for hitting those low balls, and in pickleball the ball doesn't bounce up high either. The semi-western grip that has taken over tennis is great for hitting high bouncing heavy balls. But for something low you really have to spin it, and pickleball paddles just aren't great at doing that. That's why it's so weird for me to see people using it: they're almost exclusively hitting balls where the grip is at its weakest!

Wow. Really appreciate the comment. Learned something new. Makes 100% sense. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Do you shift the grip for a backhand, like in tennis?

Hello Jay. I keep the same grip. There are some who adjust. It is a bit of personal preference. But keep in mind that it adds another layer of complexity to your shot. Take care

Continental grip is held the same as a hammer- you would hammer the nail with the edge of the paddle/ Hand shake grip is an Eastern grip

Appreciate the comment. Seen the terms used differently in different places. Some even refer to continental as eastern. Hopefully the images in the video clarify the grip. But thank you for pointing this out. Always looking to correct/grow in knowledge.

Overheads are more difficult with c grip. You have to remember to pronate your forearm to square up the paddle.
@BestPickleballCoach

What’s up Don? Agreed. But I’ll take a decreased overhead in exchange for the other advantages of the grip.

The marking you made. Isn't it an Eastern grip on the backhand? Isn't the V be right on the top of the grip instead of slightly to the left?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 3 года назад
Fair question. My recollection is that the line is along the continental but the two are close.

There are 5 common grips: continental, eastern, semi western, western and extreme eastern. In regards to the forehand, I use the eastern grip at the baseline, in transition or when serving. With the Backhand I switch to continental and use continental at the NVZ. Very seldom do I see people use a western grip and never have I seen someone use the extreme eastern. Those two grips should never be used in pickleball.
@BestPickleballCoach

Many players overlook the importance of the grip. Agree that extreme grips present challenges to play. Thanks for the comment.

I did a video on it called the whack a mole grip. Check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pwsZP1Sgz_k.html. Changing grips can be done but it is a tricky proposition.

@@BestPickleballCoach thx I watched it...the eastern grip is not that severe....many pros....and I a 4.5 player not a pro....are using this to generate more top spin on forehand ground strokes ......I use the continental grip also for sure at the net.....not saying it’s better or worse just an option....keep up the good work.

Should the bottom of the handle land in the flesh of the palm, or should it be a bit below? Thanks
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 2 года назад
Hello Carol. There is no 100% answer here. The farther down the grip you hold the paddle the more power but less control and vice versa.

@@BestPickleballCoach Ah, thank you.! I've seen so many versions of paddles, besides shapes, composition, sizes, weight, price - then figuring out handles - long handles, short handles, and really long handles - I was going nuts -- Thanks again -

Hello Dorian. The key to the grip is a 90 degree paddle when held out. That provides the most versatility to the game. Be well. Tony
