I’m back and in today’s video I share with you how I got my Pilea to grow from a tiny baby plant into a giant monster. I’ll also answer a lot of the common questions I often get about the Pilea. Why do leaves curl inwards and outwards? What does it mean when the leaves are pale vs yellow? And also, quickly summarize how to care for one of my favorite indoor plants, Pilea Peperomioides.

Growing this from a tiny baby plant to this big boy truly makes me a proud plant parent. Which plant of yours have you grown from a baby one that makes you proud plant moms and plant dads?

Must be my golden Pothos. This year is my first time ever trying to propagate, starting with golden Pothos because I've heard that it's easy to start with. The plant is not that big yet, but it has a lot of new growth, and I'm really proud of it 😁

My plant that's given me the most dramatic growth under my care is my nepenthes ventrata pitcher plant. Bought her as a small hanging basket and she's grown exponentially in only 2 seasons. After much trial and error due to her being my first and only carnivorous plant, she's finally started making pitchers for me! Feeding her a fly the other day had me so excited lol

I really appreciate that you stress that plants won’t look perfect. I work in a plant shop and I get a lot of people who get stressed over their plants having a tiny brown spot or a misshapen leaf, etc, and I always tell them that plants, like people, are living things and will naturally have imperfections.

I was deeply concerned for the well-being of my young pilea peperomioides that I purchased at the beginning of this summer. He lost all his original leaves and I’ve had to basically babysit him everyday to ensure a proper recovery. I amended the soil to give him more drainage and though he was a little shocked at first, he eventually adapted and has continued to put out new growth. It has been quite the struggle but it is such a beautiful journey and it is so fulfilling to see him recover. I’m so excited to continue to care for him and watch him progress... hopefully to the level of your guy lol Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge with the world 💚

That's awesome, I use half potting soil, half Cacti/succulent soil for my houseplants too.. I have for about a year and have been super happy with it. Plus those annoying little gnats wont live in the cacti soil due to being part sand, I've been putting a good layer of it on the very top for awhile now due to that

My pilea mom has lived with me for a year. She has 5 babies on their own now. I relocated the family from a south west window to a east window 2 months ago then they dropped leaves like crazy 2 weeks ago. Moved back to a west window and only 3 leaves have dropped since. Rescued! Will give filtered water a try too ... getting lots from my dehumidifier until the cold comes back with the forced air heating.

Disfruten mucho tu video. Bendiciones.

Gorgeous pilea - amazing work! My pilea is growing to the point where I really need to stake it (50cm/1.5 foot tall now) and I was wondering about your bamboo stake that's by the centre stem - did you just drive the stake right down the soil ball? I'm worried that doing so I would kill a lot of roots in the middle of the plant so have been really hesitant. Thanks in advance for helping with my question!

I always thought it is a must to remove them and put them in separate pots. I always love seeing your Pilea! QUESTION: Is terracotta pot better for Pilea, or what pot material would you recommend? (Mine is still in the grow pot.) Thanks!
@CrazyPlantGuy
@CrazyPlantGuy 4 года назад
It depends on your potting mixture and your watering habits. Terracotta pots are good because they allow a lot of airflow through the pots and soil so you can avoid overwatering if you tend to over water or your soil mixture is pretty heavy.

If anyone has a basement dehumidifier, save the water. I usually put it in a large pail and fill empty gallon water jugs. Also, if you ever get 1/2 gallon containers save those too. When we run water to get hot water, we fill those and keep the lids off for a day or two to let the chlorine evaporate. Things like running the tap for hot water as well as putting hot water in a tea pot to preheat it can give you a lot of future plant water.

Thank you so much for this vid. My pilea pepermioides wants to grow up to be just like yours haha. A few of my leaves curl in and now I know why. My only window is north facing and she loves it but I thought let's put her under a grow light, whoops, back to the window.

You might have better luck going to a local nursery- that's where I found mine. It wasn't as expensive as Home Depot or Lowe's either!

Oh every time you show the Pilea I want one, do you think it will ship well? Looks so delicate.
@CrazyPlantGuy
@CrazyPlantGuy 4 года назад
Hmm it depends on where you got it from and how well they pack it. I think smaller ones would ship ok and have a huger chance of surviving or the leaves staying intact

@@CrazyPlantGuy I wish I have string of heart, but since string is somewhat danger for pets, I have a cat so I don't want to take the risk to have that plant. But luckily other like money plant is safe for pets. Love them.

When you say "cacti soil", different brands of cacti soil have different types/contents. Some brands are just 100% coco peat and call it cacti soil. So what are the contents of the cacti soil you use?

So informative! My plant has yellow leaves all the time, and it’s driving me crazy. I thought it was iron that it needed…like when your bush leaves or small tree leaves turn yellow. I give it fertilizer that has the same ratio of nutrients. Would iron help also? Thanks…love your videos!

Thanks for the info Christian! My 2 year old pilea is growing well and sending out pups regularly but is pale green (not yellow) all over with some cupping. It's about time to repot it so I'll try to up the drainage and see what happens. It might be getting too much light but since we're heading into winter it will get less naturally. It's fertilised regularly so I don't think lack of nitrogen is an issue.

Thanks Sylvie for sharing your Pilea experience and how you’ve diagnose it. I’m also on the fence of taking my Pilea back from the window since we’re heading into the winter. 🤔

Just a thought: add some liquid chelated iron to your water. Available at your local plant nursery. I generally water with 1 Tablespoon chelated iron and 1 Tablespoon liquid fish emulsion to 1 gallon of water. I do this every other watering during spring and summer. It keeps plant leaves very green and doesn’t harm them in my experience. My pilea P. is about a foot tall and grows fast. I did move her from a huge north window to an east window a few weeks ago. I have noticed some leathery paler leaves along the bottom so I think she may have gotten a bit too much direct sunlight. The babies are still growing amazingly fast for October in the Midwest US.

@@nichelle6058 thanks! I hadn't thought about a possible iron deficiency but it's certainly possible! I'll source some and give it a try 👍
