In March 2015, I grew my first tamarind from seed. Now it has grown into an impressive small tamarind tree. This video is the story of the trials, errors, and tribulations of growing this tropical tree over the years in Texas (zone 8b).
The video can also serve as a guide on how to grow a tamarind tree or seedling after the first year. Check out this video for the story of my first ‘plant baby’, Tammy the Tamarind.

Pretty cool, This past year I've also been growing a tamarind tree. I would recommend doing some pruning in the late winter. Pruning strengthens and thickens the trunk and remaining branches, and also encourages denser growth. It can feel harsh to cut away the live parts of the plant, but ultimately it does it well.

Great video. Hope you have fruit in a couple yrs! I planted 6 seeds (I brought seeds back from Puerto Rico) but 4 of them didn't make it. They went a few days with no water in the Florida heat. But the 2 I have are now 6 months old and doing great!

Thank you for your lovely story about Tammy. My friend gave me two tamarind pods yesterday and that was why I found your video. I planned to grow them from seeds but was skeptical of their survival. Since tamarinds are tropical plants, I guess they are high maintenant. Not sure I should grow them or not. Btw, I live in Texas just like you.

I swear I read or saw a RU-vid video that said they don’t bear fruit until they’re 7 years old. Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong but I’d be really excited if I could keep one alive long enough to bare fruit. Looking forward to my 64th birthday 🤣

It got scorched cos you did not acclimatise the plant to the sun, from growing inside the house. Put it out for an hour at first then increase an hour daily. Start when the sun is not at its zenith to avoid scorching. Tammy still would of recovered if you left her out🤗🤗🇬🇧

Hey if you scuff the seeds up with some sandpaper so the hard outer shell can absorb water. Once you put them in water they will germinate in a few days to a week. As soon as the outer shell wrinkles up. I had 90% of them sprout.

I kept mine in water for 12 hours only and it grew. Now I have two seedlings . It grew in just 9 days. I will make a twin trunk tamarind bonsai by fusing roots together. Don't grow in the yard its massive tree.

Companion planting. Certain plants attract ladybugs and would help with aphids pretty sure. But i enjoyed the video. Hopefully ill try my own tamarind thanks for the tip with the nail clippers

As of May 2022 at seven years old, Tammy hasn't flowered yet. This year, I've switched fertilizer that will encourage root and flower development. She also may be still recovering from the February 2021 freeze (her top half froze off). Fingers crossed I see something this year! 😉

Thank you so much! It's a waiting game for sure. In August 2022, when Tammy was seven years old, she produced one flower! I was so surprised and happy that she produced a flower for the first time. But it didn't produce even though Tammy was very healthy. As years go on, I'm realizing that my natural growing zone may be too short for tamarinds. They'll grow and produce new branches and leaves, but I don't think they'll make productive flowers and fruit. My tamarinds HATE the winter greenhouse and they'll have to start from ground zero in the spring when I take them outside. If anything, it's a nice plant to grow passively. Apparently, you can eat and cook the sour leaves in dishes! I might try that soon!

hHey Shamrock, thank you for sharing you're tamarind adventure! I have a small tamarind plant tip, that i grew from seed, but the little seed pods on either side of the delicate trunk fell off by accident, when did your seed pods naturally fall off of the plants stems? please?
@shamrockgirl804
@shamrockgirl804 4 года назад
I think the seed pod parts fall off at the two-month mark. If the leaves sprouted and formed before they fell off, the seedling should be ok. It may be stunted a little bit, but as long as the leaves are out, it should be ok 😊
