My parents house backs up to an unused pasture. An apple tree showed up a number of years ago and now produces large, sweet, gold apples with a nice pink blush that are ready to harvest around the first week of august. Easily the best seedling apple tree I’ve ever found!
I came close to your experience when I owned a home: One day I was mowing the lawn, and noticed a rather healthy looking , tiny, tree growing. I steered my mower around it, and kept doing so. >> It grew into a 20-30 foot tall Mulberry tree! I was as thrilled as you were with what I had done! I enjoy eating Mulberries; still do. I "had" the tree for about 25 years. Although I lost my house and the tree is now gone; I still have the memories of it, and hope to get some land in the future and start things anew! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Thank you for this video. My grandma recently died and we are emptying her house. She has a huge apple tree in the garden that she often made random pies and crumbles for us with. The thought of leaving the tree here for the next owners is so sad, so I looked for how I could take a piece of the tree! I've just wrapped a load of seeds and placed in the fridge... Fingers crossed I can continue her apple tree 💜
If you want to have a clone of your grandma’s apple tree I would suggest you to get some branch cuttings and try to root them with rooting hormone, check for videos of how to do it. This way you would get the same exact apples. Wish you luck!
Hi, I would take a whole bunch of cuttings and try to root them. Those cuttings are your grandmother’s tree. Rooting cuttings is a challenge for me, but I’m going to try again today with many different cuttings. Those seeds are the next generation. I think the fruit from those will be different from the fruit of your grandmother’s tree. I wish you luck continuing on the tree. That’s awesome.
@@AilsaMace you need to search "how to graft" basically you grow a apple from seed cut the top of the seedling and you cut off a small branch from the tree and you graft them together with the seedling rootstock. this will give you a clone of the original tree with the roots of the seedling which will give better vigor than a cutting will.
@billyd7628 yep grocery store apple. It was from three different premium varieties and had planted 6 trees , three of which fruited and all three that fruited, when ripe were decent. To note I live in sub tropical climate so a pleasant surprise to have any fruit at all.
@@jmunsamy im gonna try with some cosmic crisp seeds i got. im in a very sub tropical place. as in basically only freezes like a few days a year on the years it does freeze. and the freezes are just 32f never under the 30s.
I like to plant random seeds around public where there are drip systems or near ponds and city lakes. Sunflowers are a great starter. The city should be a food forest. Maybe I will start mixing in apple and pear seeds.
Oh yes, I can tell you now that I'll be watching this at least ten times. I'm interested in dwarf apple trees, and keeping them pruned small. Your advice on everything from soil to water to pruning is invaluable! Thanks James! Thanks Tuck!
I did a science project with my kindergarten students with apple seeds. They themselves took the seeds out of apples, and wrapped them in wet paper towels. I took them home to put in my fridge. When they showed signs of sprouting, I brought them back to class and the kids planted them in cups. They each ended up with a little apple tree to bring home! It was so fun! Now I’m going to do it for myself with your inspiration. Thanks!
When my kid was in 1st grade, he would save all the apple seeds and germinate them. After 3 years, I have 9 apple trees. They are not producing yet, but I'll probably have to remove some from my backyard in the next few years.
My 2 year old once saw one of your harvest videos and ever since then, every now and then she will ask "Watch Tucky?" So, here´s some ❤🧡💛💚💙💜 for Tucky from my little one :)
I love watching almost every video you have up, and I love how you get so excited every time you Harvest are you have grown, and it just makes my day!!!😊❤
Hi.. its lovely to see your passion for home grown plants and fruits..got 2 apple seeds germinate in the heat of Mumbai..i grew them by natural method of sowing in the soil.. and they have germinated.. one was plucked off at the sprout ..will that continue to grow?
Thanks for the update, James! Your first video about this years ago inspired me to try this. I kept seeds from my Kindercrisp apple tree, which was pollinated by my neighbor's tree (unknown variety), and planted them in the fall of 2021. In spring (2022) only 1 germinated, but it grew fast! A rabbit chewed it down to the snow line the first winter, but it came back in spring 2023 and surpassed the previous year's growth that was lost. It's now protected (fenced in) so I'm excited to see what happens next spring! I can't wait for the day that I get to taste an apple from my own unique variety!
Hi, I just cant wait for spring sowing ,i have my flower game going strong now and with your last video about the best tasting prolific seeds to purchase, its going to be a wonderful spring 2024 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ thanks James & tuck!
This is the first winter I’m growing in my greenhouse over winter and planted various seeds from trees, but never thought about fruit. Now’s the time! 😊
Thank you for teaching me more about apple trees. I was thinking of planting the organic apple seed from the apple I ate this morning, but my HOA requires that no more than 10 feet of shade hit my neighbor's yard. I know now that I will need to get a dwarf apple tree. Love to see your passion for your gardening!
Hi, I got do excited to find your site. I have a question, I started the growth from seeds and planted it in a pot but the stem is growing so skinny but I have 6 leaves. My question is how do I get the trunk to get thicker? Thank you
That's really cool! I also have my own apple going on, it is possibly a crossing between crabapple and a regional summer apple (a sort of sauce apple) that is really nice. This year it grew to 60 cm, from 20. So soon I'll also have fruit.
Thanks for another great video. An apple that grows true from seed is the Antonovka apple. I think it does good up to zone 8. I have lots of seedlings from other apples that will probably be crab apples but I need them as pollinators so I'm pretty happy.
This is how I found your channel years ago, when I looked up how to plant apple seeds! I am working on my own food forest now. Thanks James and TUCK♥♥♥♥
That is cool!!! I grew a plant from an apple seed out of an apple I got from the Farmer's Market about a year ago and people told me it was going to turn into a crabapple,,,so I appreciate your correct information about growing from a seed out of an apple you ate 😅🍎 The plant is still alive too!! I actually just have it with my house plants and have not planted it outdoors yet but now I will!! Thanks!!!
My Gradson and I have planted gala apple seed and now have seedlings sprouting up so far we have 13 that have came up we planted about 28 hills 3 seeds to each hill.
This is awesome bro, lately I've been dreaming of lush vegatation & growing my own food stuffs. I have been experimenting with making apple fruit flour amongst other fruits to make bread & the endless possibilities with the right methods, I have been mind blown why bread companies haven't come up with different types of breads & my homemade bread makes store bought bread taste bland & boring! Just the thought of walking through a garden & you're surrounded by the things you have grown from seed & feeling good that it's because of you that made it happen, & it helps you to love & appreciate yourself better, it's therapeutic, just hope that it doesn't turn up feeling like a chore, because nobody really likes chores!😊
How did you know i was planning on doing this, this year? I collected a ton of apples from my husbands grandpas property for applesauce and i collected several hundred seeds to try my hand at getting my own trees to grow! Perfect timing! Thank you!
Such a fun video! I have several acres now to work with so my experiments of growing apples from seed aren’t that crazy after all lol. Last year I sprouted dozens of apple seeds and was so excited but a freeze killed them all as I was away from home. Sad. I do still want a honey crisp apple tree though. ☺️ Still experimenting is just so much fun so I’m excited I have the room to do it. I love the Prigioni apple tree! Beautiful! My, you are patient though ! 👍🏻
Thank you so much this is the content I like. Planting from seed is magical and so important, we need more landrace varieties like yours. Btw does anyone know how well this works with citrics? I want evergreen fruit trees.
Had a transplanted apple tree twice and nearly some decades old. Forgot the variety but looked like it's a HoneyCrisp and after a couple of decades it was producing over medium sized to large sized apples. What can you suggest to expedite the growth into larger apples instead of waiting a couple of decades. In Japan, they cut off multiple apples once the flowers had changed to fruits so that more of the nutrients would go to the remaining apples in the cluster. Will continuously doing it every year cause the apple to naturally grow into larger size? Also glad to see Tuck's still up and have a healthy appetite, my Yorkie Terrier had some great last months before it passed away after 11yrs.❤🍎
You should thin the fruit so there is only one apple per cluster and no fruit closer than 6” apart. You have to do it every year, the tree won’t “learn” to do it.
Hi James, I was just wondering about the grafting to a dwarf I didn’t quite understand what that meant. What you do to do that process could you explain thank you.
Hi James, I love that you grew your own apple tree. It’s such a beautiful tree. I’m wondering if the seeds I planted from my lemons will be genetically different from its parent tree. I’m so excited to see what I get. Thanks for the encouragement. I planted 6 seeds. Let’s see how many make it.
Thank you for sharing your joy! I am about to begin planting and propagating apple seeds in a moist paper towel in a plastic bag in my fridge; very excited to try this. What are the best heirloom / disease resistant apple trees that you have found? Have you done any videos on grafting apple trees? :)
I wonder if I can plant an apple tree by dropping a few apples on the ground in the fall? This is how nature does it, and the seeds would experience stratification over the winter. Has anybody had any luck with this method?
I haven't tried that before of letting the seeds out in the winter but there is this one time I have grown apple seeds from the pink lady apples what I have noticed about the pink lady apples the seeds in them are usually sprouting I do think for easy growing I would recommend the pink lady apples
I bought some Granny Smith apples from the store and when I cut them open, the seeds were sprouting!! I planted the seeds and can’t wait to see if they grow. I planted about 20 seeds in a pot. When should I transplant them in the ground?
I was just wondering how to grow apples from seed... Ambrosia apples are my favourite and i purchased some from the local farmers market so the should grow in my region. Might give this a try!! Thanks for the inspiration ❤❤❤
This is so cool. I can't believe how many apples are on that three. I planted some germinated apple seeds (germinated in the apple) about two years ago. Mine is less than a foot tall at this point and I think it's not getting enough sun. I wonder if it will be OK to move it or will I damage the tap root?
I would love to see a video of you grafting a tree to a root stalk , it's the first I've heard of that. Then again I am kind of a gardening noob...lol PS: please give Tuck a nice head scratching for me bro... 😁👍
Awesome video I'm trying to learn more and more about apple trees I have some that are finally producing Delicious Fruit after 7 years planting a twig and I just planted more apple trees and some peach trees this last summer I can't wait till they start producing fruit
Hey, I’ve a question. I’m sorry if I missed as you might have already mentioned it in your video but I really couldn’t catch. Which one of these trees is the one you repotted in ground. I’m interested in knowing how an in-house apple plant would grow into after repotting into ground. Thanks, beautiful video.
We don't have apple tree in our country the Philippines but this month a planted a seed in a tissue and it sprouts.from now on it is already 20 days old and having a three leaves coming out.
In the wild apples are very small. The ones that you buy in the store are genetic clones of each other so that they can consistently sell large apples. Even if you grow a tree from the seeds of a store bought apple the offspring tree will usually have tiny apples.
The original, wild apple tree from which all domesticated varieties descend is the crabapple. They're teeny tiny. All the major varities were selectively bred and hybridized for bigger, sweeter fruit, just like most varieties of all commercialized fruits and vegetables now.
@@HickoryDickory86 Well said. I breed apple trees myself and pretty much all of them grow into crabapples regardless of what apple you take the seeds from. Crabapples are the natural state of apples.
My favorite apple us the Wisconsin or Michigan Macintosh, i so want my own apple tree, but im 60.arent I too old now? Hi Tuck ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐶
I've heard about needing to put your apple seed through a cold period but I just soaked my fresh seed in water over night and then sowed in soil and kept the soil moist about a week and a half later a seedling sprouted... But I know typically I won't have that luck again
I just planted around 35 apples from seed this year! You have a higher chance of it being a good apple of you grow from good varieties that were crossed with other good varieties!
Do you have a video on how to spray apple trees? I watched a recent video you did with Millenium Gardner where you mentioned you sprayed trees with chalk? Can you recommend what to spray and where to get the product you use. Thank you and enjoy your very helpful videos. take care, gino
In my store bought apples i eat for lunch recently the seeds have already started germinating while inside the apple so ive been just eating them taking the already germinated seeds and planting them
