I just want to say, enjoy and experiment! Food always tastes great when you grow it! If you have a yard, one of the things I did, because I am sort of lazy, is, plant a few things that come up every year like rhubarb, strawberries, asparagus, berries and fruits and grapes, plus some herbs and I try to encourage natural wild plants that are healthy and healing. I also got a few mushroom spores from the wild Morales and oyster that I got to grow...

If you cover the tater in deeper soil, the vines will produce more roots and they are actually easier to dislodge from the tater.

Use straw or leaf mulch and you'll grow more and bigger .s.weet .potato do better when they are unrestricked (sandy loam) or something close. I grow in a bed (10 to 12 in déep, on top of the dirt. ). Built from cardboard base. Then layering pine straw and leaves, little dirt, wheat straw and leaf mulch (from the city for free) layer of little dirt, wheat straw again. I try to add a good layer of shredded CARDBOARD (appliance store, work on this in Jan and Feb) Then do all these layers again. For real. I only use compost in the hole where I plant the slip. Add NO nitrogen. But I do add potash and some phosphorous. Eggshells or calcium. Yes. Really 10 to 12 inches high to start. It shrink to 5 or 6 in. Great soil for my containers for the next season. I wish I could show you pictures. Gobs and gobs of HUGE potatoes. Want pics? Mildred1150 @gmail. I'm 73 and low income..lots of time. Almost everything I use is free. All the stuff I use tend to hold moisture but not be soggy so plants can thrive while requiring less watering. Loose enough to grow freely. I make my own slips. Also sell slips locally to fund my garden. Miss Whites, Beauregard, Japanese Purple, Red Garnet and Stokes Purple. You can do it too.

I’m growing some sweet potatoes this year for the first time, orange, red, and purple varieties. I noticed the orange ones I planted are finally sending up slips so I guess I’ll be doing the same thing in a little bit, lol. I really enjoy your gardening vids. Also I have the same tiller you do, how do you like it? I can only use mine in reverse rotation mode otherwise it drags me around the yard, 😂😂
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 3 года назад
The tiller is okay for the $800 I paid for it but like you said you can really only use it when you have the tines in reverse.

I have watched quite a few videos of yours lately. I was wondering about your orchard. It may be possible that the manure you were using is the problem. It the hay the horses were fed had been treated with some kind of pesticide or insecticide. Try to find a horse owner that gets organic hay if at all possible. Hope this may helps. Especially if you keep replacing dead trees in the same spot. Like the one by the trellises at the corner of your raised beds.
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 3 года назад
Thanks but I checked with the guy I get it from and he says that it comes from a place where they raise high end purebred horses and they feed them the best types of hay and alfalfa grasses. But you never know.

Just found you today. We’re in East Texas too. City folk who’ve moved to the country. Sold our custom built city house and bought 25 acres and living in the mobile home that was on the property. New to EVERYTHING countrified. Just buried a couple of sweet potatoes to try to grow slips. Do you think I’m too late?

That's awesome 👍 no it's not to late, we have a long growing season here, just make sure to keep the soil moist but not soaked.

Hi … i live in North Texas and i planted my slips but i woke up this morning to find them eaten up … like vine and leaves! Ugh will they grow back? I think it’s rabbits and so i am going to put chicken wire over them and hope that works
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading Месяц назад
They should grow back. Once the slips take root in your garden, they'll take off like wild fire.

Thank you for this video! We are looking to move to East Texas. What area are you in? Where would you suggest for a younger family?
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 3 года назад
We are around the Lufkin, Nacogdoches area. It would all depend on what type of work you do and if you can find work near a small city. I would try to find a home around 20 miles or so away from any city. Tyler would have more work opportunities but it's growing fast and if you're not far enough away, you'll find subdivisions building around you real soon. Hope this helps.

This is kind of off topic but I would suggest growing bamboo especially if you're worried about having to go off grid. Bamboo has many uses I don't think I need to go any further. Just an idea I use the bamboo I grow for building all kinds of things
