Growing mosses at home Vegetative reproduction of mosses at home is quite possible, although it sounds strange and unrealistic, only because not many people imagine how this is possible. There is a stereotype in our head that mosses should grow in swamps or in a forest, but not at home, but I am sure that after this video you will change your ideas about mosses and you will understand that there is nothing complicated about it. Not a drop is more difficult than growing an orchids or bromeliad on a windowsill, because they, like mosses, belong to epiphytes, that is, this means that mosses, for example, attaching to a tree use the tree only as a support and are not parasites and do not suck nutrients from the tree and do not harm it, but receive food from decomposed organic matter stuck in the bark of a tree and photosynthesis The mosses have root-like formations of rhizoids which mosses hold on to supports and which have a suction capacity. They use rhizoids, root like structures to attach themselves to the surface and absorb water and nutrients, but not through rhizoids, but through the capillaries game system, that hair like rhizoids form. Rhizoids are capable of forming from any cell of moss and are responsible for vegetative reproduction of mosses. From the rhizoids, a protonema is formed, and from the protonema, leafy gametophytes or new mosses grow. In short, mosses are able to grow quickly and easily vegetatively. This property explains the invasiveness of some mosses. They are even capable of crowding out your green lawn or filling up a stone path.#moss #mossgarden #sphagnummoss #terrarium #mosswall

I'm mildly obsessed with moss recently. I grow a ton of other species of plants in the philo/orchid/anyhurium/Hoya families, and a ton of air plants but something about moss, ferns and the forest floor are so comforting to me! I'm bringing it inside 🥰

Until yesterday I'd never even heard of an orchid until 3 cymbidium floribundums arrived at my door. And thanks to you they got cleaned up nice, but now that I've seen your potting mix for orchids and this moss video I think Im gonna need to change their substrate to include more organic matter, airflow, and living moss to decompose that OM. What a cool little sidequest, I guess that makes you Gandalf to our Bilbo 😂👋💕

Just be careful when picking moss: only take a little from each place so that you don't get the biological balance in that place out of order. It takes a long time to grow back and moss has its place in the bio balance.

Please, please PLEASE reconsider on using peat. Peat bogs and heathlands are rare environments, and important carbon sinks. They're being depleted at an alarming rate by the compost industry. From someone who grew up in the heather moors of Northern England, please consider peat-free options

I accidentally grew some moss. I had some old dried moss from some flowers and I wet it and put it in an old paper coffee cup with a couple of orchid sticks on it to grow some orchids (had a tiny bit of vanilla coffe in the cracks I didn't wash it haha). I covered it in a black tshirt and pulled it out 2 weeks later and the moss was vibrantly alive and had become beautiful green! I was so surprised because I had remembered you said "grow your own moss" in a few other vids I had watched of yours. I even washed some and made a little moss ball tying it with a little piece of thread for my betta's fish tank and he's litterally sleeping next to it right now he loves it hahaha Even the little moss sticks started to grow in it. hahahaha Ok now I'm gonna watch this vid to see if I did it right.

We have a few amazing spots where moss grew by itself, a pile of sand on a table and a vacuum cleaner bag, both completely covered in a heavy coat of moss, two different types. Last year I harvested the vacuum cleaner moss so start new propagation experiments, some succeeded to varying degrees, it's starting back up, it's been a dry year, and I just started misting all the moss to bring it back up. I'm trying to use the moss as a covering for strawberry plants from seed, balancing moisture in the soil for resilience in the hot summer for the seedlings~

Isopods and Hexapods like springtails are even beneficial for moss, because they are feeding on decomposed organic materials, other microbiota like protozoa, rotifers or nematodes are also supposed to be there. Against overgrowth of rotting bacteria and unpleasant smell use mild solution of potassium permanganate, just ones is enough, then balanced micro bio system will work on its own.

Once you have placed the moss in the plastic fruit containers-and it seems that you placed a lot of moss in the container, how much more moss will grow and is there enough space in that plastic container? What do you then do with the wet moss since you did not place it in a glass container to start with. Or do you just leave it on the windowsill in the plastic fruit container in a grey plastic bucket??

Charcoal and coal are not the same. Charcoal, as in the type used for barbecue, is treated with chemicals. How is that good for moss?
@Classyflowers
@Classyflowers 2 года назад
Common charcoal is made from peat, coal, wood, coconut shell, or petroleum. Activated charcoal is similar to common charcoal but is manufactured especially for medical use. To produce activated charcoal, common charcoal is heated to about 900 °C (1,700 °F) in the presence of a gas (usually steam), causing the charcoal to develop many internal spaces, or "pores", which help the activated charcoal to trap chemicals. Impurities on the surface of the charcoal are also removed during this process, greatly increasing its adsorption capacity.
