Arrowleaf clover is a cool-season heavy reseeding annual legume that is a favorite among many deer managers. Arrowleaf is easy to grow in food plots and provides many nutritional benefits to deer. Arrowleaf forage provide 20% protein and about 80% digestible dry matter. There are two main varieties of Arrowleaf clover that are most popular, Apache and Yuchi. Both varieties are popular among food plot managers and provide a ton of forage for deer throughout the spring and summer.
Arrowleaf seeds need to be inoculated in Type "O" bacteria for proper inoculation. This allows for the roots to affix nitrogen and makes way for a healthy life all the way to full maturity (and seeding out).
Plant with small grains at the rate of 10-15lbs per acre. The optimal planting depth of Arrowleaf seed is between 1/4-1/2 inch deep. Just a light covering of dirt is all you need to cause germination.
Arrowleaf clover will grow between 2-5 feet tall and provides great bedding cover for deer. Deer also like the stems of Arrowleaf and will eat the plant from tender shoots all the way to full maturity.
You need Type "O" inoculant for arrowleaf clover.
Thanks for watching! God Bless!

Jimi Davis Hi Jimi...welcome to our channel! I too love that mixture you mentioned...oats, turnip, and clover! I’ve been very impressed with arrowleaf clover. It keeps on giving year after year and the deer love it. Thanks for watching! God bless!

I truly enjoy your videos you got such a good outlook on things I appreciate all the information have a great year this year I know everybody's kind of off the kick of soybeans but I still got 40 pounds of those left from last year 25 lb of crimson clover and I just got some stuff in from Whitetail Institute I'll let you know what happens

Nothing wrong with soybeans! I use them for bow plots sometimes and I plant them really thick. The deer love the buffet but will eat them down to the stems. Good luck with your plots and keep in touch!

Going to give arrowleaf a go this fall. Typically, when preparing our Fall plots, we mow and burn the plots prior to reseeding in early September. Will burning disrupt any of the arrowleaf seed that has fallen into the seed bank?
@TheHandyHunter

I’ve never done it but I think you’d be fine.

Sounds good. I wasn’t sure if you could disc or not. Wasn’t sure if it would cover the clover seeds too deep. Thanks!!

Won’t have to worry about the clover. If you let it seed out good then there’ll be plenty in the seedbank for the spring/summer. Good luck!

Forgot to ask. Do you have a current clover plot that’s ready to seed or are you planning to plant some clover into your fall mix?

I'm not sure what I did wrong. I had an area cleared in Southern West Virginia. I limed it real good. Put down black hawk arrow leaf clover in the Spring and it came up almost immediately and but just stopped growing. It's June now and it's only 6 inches tall. Any help would be much appreciated.
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter Месяц назад
I haven’t used Blackhawk so Im not sure how tall it gets. Is it starting to get the seed heads on it yet? I always plant in September with my fall mix and it kicks in in the Spring. Did you innoculate the seed with proper bacteria? If you don’t innoculate properly it will come up but have stunted growth.

@@TheHandyHunter I think that's were I went wrong. I just spread the seed with Forage Oats and Crimson Clover. The oats did fine, Arrowleaf and Crimson Clover not so much. What would you recomment at this point not the cat is out of the bag?
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter Месяц назад
I would let my oats seed out and then consider planting some summer peas like cowpeas or soybeans if your clovers are too thin. Good luck!

I just leased some property in South Mississippi that has about 6 food plots averaging 1/2 to 3/4 acre in size. They all have clover with a lot of weeds in it. I’m hoping I can spray these plots with 24db to kill out the weeds, wait 3 weeks and spread oats and wheat then bush hog the dead weeds down onto the oats/wheat for a winter plot. Then hopefully the clover will be back next spring. The clover has seeded out but I can’t tell what kind of clover it is. It is lower growing than the arrowleaf in your video. I’ve planted clover several times before but I planted it with my oats and covered it too deep. This past year I planted my oats, covered them, then planted my clover directly of top of the ground without covering it. I had a good stand of crimson last fall/winter/spring but it dies out by Mid May. I want a clover that lasts longer into summer. Does your clover provide forage in the cold winter months or is it mainly for spring and early summer? I’ve been checking into Balansa clover, Ladino, Red clover, Durana and Blackhawk Arrowleaf. Do you know anything about these other types? I have about 15 food plots that I want to add clover to this year. I’m trying to decide which clover to try. Or I may try several varieties to see which works best in my area. Thanks for your time and advice.

Do you have a harrow? If so, I'd suggest spreading your oats/wheat into the weeds/clover and then disking it in to cover it slightly. You might get a poor stand if you just lay the weeds on top of the seed, especially if you don't get several days of rain. You can then come back and top dress it with clover if you want. When I plant clover in the fall I don't see it until the spring. I will see little sprouts in the fall but it doesn't take off until warmer months. Once it's established deer will still eat it into the fall. I've grown several varieties but probably had the best luck with Durana. I had a really nice acre plot for about 3 to 4 years and then the summer drought one year killed it. It's been hard to repeat due to hard summer droughts each year. The annual clovers like Dixie and Arrowleaf are really easy to grow and but they are heavy reseeders and will dominate your spring plot...just keep that in mind if you want to grow something else as well. I'm planting some Balansa this year too. I tried it last year and the drought got my plot. I think there is a Louisiana variety of white clover that might do well in your area. I think SeedworldUSA (use my discount code handyhunter7 if you buy from here, you'll get 7% off) might carry it. Good luck and feel free to email me at steve@digitalsouth.com if you need anything. Always fun experimenting with food plots, etc. Have fun!

When you say it’s ready to be turned in to get iron clay peas going, how do you prepare the field for planting the peas? From the stage that clover is at now what are the next steps to get peas growing?
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter 5 лет назад
Hi Tim, you can do it a couple of ways depending on how much work you want to do. I generally broadcast the pea seed right into the clover and then disc it in....done! A longer way is to disc the field and let it lay in the sun for a day or two and then broadcast your pea seed followed by light disking. Either way works great! As always, just pray for rain after you plant! Good luck and have fun!

So do you disc that over and put the pees in it for fall and then the clover comes up again in spring. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

If I have a good stand of clover I will let it seed out good, bush hog it, and then usually plant oats after lightly disking. I usually plant fall plots around 2nd week of Sept in central Georgia. Hope that helps!

Came back to get some more information so did you tell that clover in and put the clay peas in and if so did the Clover come back also
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter 3 года назад
The clover gets thinner as the years go bye so I then like to do something new to the plot like planting cowpeas. If you have a good stand of clover I wouldn’t try planting cowpeas, only if you think the clover has run its course. I just replanted this exact plot with clover in the fall so I won’t be planting cowpeas until it doesnt produce well anymore. Hope that helps!! Good luck👍

Barry Mulharan Hi Barry! I usually plant sometime between 1st and 3rd week of September...depending on when I get time. I try to get them up good before the rut. Keep in touch. Thanks for watching!

I grow arrowleaf too and it spreads and gets thicker ea year. How do you handle the residue so you can work the ground? I’m brush hogging multiple times but wondering if there’s another way to do it
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter 4 года назад
I typically bushhog first or sometimes just disk it in and then replant on top. I usually disk it 2 to 3 times before replanting. I love arrowleaf! My deer at my field like crazy this year. I’m planting a lot more this year. Good luck!

The Handy Hunter can you clarify “replant on top”? Isn’t there enough volunteer seed you don’t need to replant? I wonder if I just brush hogged and left residue in place, and didn’t work the ground, would I get a good stand of arrowleaf? I’d post a pic of my clover if possible
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter 4 года назад
I’m sorry, I meant that I replant oats on top for fall planting and the volunteer clover seed will come up again the next spring. I don’t replant the clover if I had a good seedout. You’ll be fine if you bushhog or even lightly break the soil with a disk. Bushhogging helps because it breaks up all those seed heads and spreads seed everywhere. Hope that helps and good luck!
