Great video. Question. Do you think it would have been ok to put a few more plants in each pot? It looks like you had extra room. No? I’m going to grow them for the first time so I’m not sure. Thanks!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 года назад
You can, but you will probably have smaller roots. Also leaves get big and if too congested they might be prone to disease. If this is your first time I suggest to have different pots with different number of plant so you can compare the results and see what works for you best. Thanks for visiting and good luck!

It's 1:a.m I'm in GA and new to this but want to start. The large container is called a grow bag? And what's the best soil/fertilizer should I use. I juice beets and it's the only thing that works for my stomach issues but sometimes hard to find in the grocery store. Any info will help

I’m in GA too :) I’ve grown pretty much everything in a mixture of peat moss, compost, and potting soil. Way cheaper to fill containers that way because the peat goes a long way. My favorite fertilizer has been liquid fish fertilizer. Smells bad but it works :)

I have seeds planted in individual 10CM containers. The plants are sprouted and are about 2 inches tall, with long spindly stems. How can I fix this or can I?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Год назад
Two main reasons for that are sowing seeds not deep enough, and lack of light. Beets are quick to germinate and you may start a new batch with sowing seeds deeper or provide enough light. If you want to keep you seedlings, you may fix the issue by adding soil and burying the stems up to the first seedling leaves. Also, when transplanting, planting deep and covering the stems will help too. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Can you grow beets in the summer? :0 mine are starting to mature but it'll be a bit longer before they develop roots. I'm worried it'll bolt. And what about fertilizing too?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 года назад
Beets are usually cool weather crop, but if you have already started earlier and they are starting to mature, you can keep them cool by providing some shade and keeping them well watered. And you can defiantly speed up the process by feeding them with a low-nitrogen fertilizer. Use water soluble vegetable fertilizers for a quick effect. Like any root plant, the N number should be much lower than P, or K in the N-P-K ratio to help develop roots and not leaves. I hope this helps and good luck!

When you start your seeds in seed cells, do they have to be put under a grow light??? Or is a heat pad good enough? I know it probably has to be near a sunny window….I just don’t have the room to set up grow lights…….ty
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Год назад
I usually don't use grow lights. I have a shed like room and as soon as they germinate I move them outside under a shade cloth or patio umbrella. A Sunny widow would be ok too, but I recommend to introduce them to outdoor sunlight few hours a day (morning sunligh) once they germinated. Hope this helps. Thanks.

How often do you water them? Are there any pests to be mindful of?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 года назад
I usually watered every other day, but in warmer days every day. And for pests, my method is to prevent and control them before they cause serious damage, like leaf eating pests. So I check regularly my plants, and if needed spray neem oil mix. Make sure to check and also spray both sides of the leaves and not just top. If you don't want to use any mix, covering plants with garden netting will be a great option too. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

What kind of fertilizer did you use and how often?

If you want to use solid food, one of the best choices is bone meal (my choice). You can mix a handful every 2-3 weeks. For organic liquid fertilizers, Dr. Earth Root Zone (0-2-2) or Bud & Bloom booster (1-2-1) are great choices. For non-organic liquid fertilizers, you can get Liquinox 0-10-10 Bloom fertilizer. (mix per instruction on the bottle and feed every 10-15 days). Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

How much water when you first plant them in the tray? And then how often to water in both tray before transfer and then once in grow bag? Do the plants need to be saturated with water in the grow bag when you do water them?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 7 месяцев назад
When you first sow the seeds, you just need to water the surface to the seeds depth. After they pop up and start developing roots, you will need to water more deeply, or even better, bottom water them by soaking tray in a tray of water. Just keep the soil moist and not soggy, probably every 2-3 days. Same applies to grow bags. Water deeply and not just on surface. But wait until top soil is dry between waterings. Hope this helps. happy growing and thank you for visiting!

@TowardGarden

Sorry to hear that. They won't grow to a good size if leaves are damaged. Try putting a shallow bowl of beer next to plants to catch slugs. Or you can use organic slug bait such as Sluggo which is basically iron phosphate. Another great option is to sprinkle food grade DE Diatomaceous earth on plants to stop slugs crossing. Hope this helps and good luck!

A balanced fertilizer has equal parts of NPK (Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) ratio, such as 5-5-5, or 10-10-10. You are correct, root crops like carrot or beet need the same growing medium. The most important is to avoid adding too much nitrogen for these kind of crops. Thank you very much for visiting!

The advantage of growing in containers is that no matter where you grow, you have the full control of the soil in pots. I provided the soil mix in the video for the pots but if you want to grow in the garden, the best is to consult with your local nursery or garden centers to see what needs to be added to the soil. Thank you for getting in touch.

Really appreciate your informative videos, just started! Do you need to prune the beets or other root vegetables? I tried kohlrabi last year got plenty of nice leafy greens, but no kohlrabis! Thanks.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 года назад
Glad you found my videos helpful. You don't need to prune root vegetables. If you are getting too many leaves but not a good size root, most probably your soil has too much nitrogen and not enough phosphorus. Phosphorus helps developing roots and is essential for vegetables like beet, kohlrabi, turnips, carrots,... . Avoid adding too much manure to the soil or feeding with high nitrogen fertilizers. Instead feed with fertilizers that has high P values in NPK ratio. Bone Meal is an excellent choice. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!
