This is how I help the Apple trees our in the yard to prevent breakage of branches and in order to create higher quality and larger apples.
Look around your tree and find the apple clusters. Reduce those clusters down to one or two apples depending on the size of the branch. Always break off the smallest of abnormal fruit since it would be most likely to fall off anyways.
Your tree will naturally drop some fruit as well. That is ok and supposed to happen. But the tree usually holds onto more than it needs so you can help it out by picking and thinning during the spring. You will notice after thinning the remaining apples grow very rapidly as the energy becomes concentrated on them!

I have an apple tree that my daughter bought me for father's day last year. It's now about 8' tall and extremely happy. Being new to owning a fruit tree i didn't even know about thinning out the crop until I saw so many apples appearing on the branches. I estimate that there must be a good 80-100 apples forming so I'm going to need to take a lot off.

Yes if you have a young tree then only leave about one apple per cluster, the largest one to develop.

I notice that they rot if I leave the cluster of five on the trees, they rot where they touch.

Yeah so break them down to one or two per cluster for better air flow and space between the fluid.

Try to thin them out a lot and they will get larger.
