This week Plant Lovers a look at a species orchid that has bloomed for the first time for me, Brassia keiliana - formerly known, like Prince, as Ada keiliana, which is a name I think I prefer! Now I haven't really tried to grow Brassia types much so I'm thrilled this species has proven very easy to grow and flower...and the flowers have a delicious fragrance which just adds to the delight!
If you want to know where I'm growing this orchid you can watch my grow space tour video here: • Orchid Grow Space Tour!
You can see which fertilisers I use here: • What fertilisers do I ...
And you can see how I drill my own terracotta orchid pots here: • How to drill your own ...
The nursery I bought this orchid from is: darkstarorchids.com.au/

Very interesting Michael😊🤲💞I love your brassia. It gets a good spot to grow in your home. I like how you add in some history into the orchid care🙏I have a concertina coelogyne😅so, it has a little corrugation and I simply increased the water to keep it moist 'quite moist' actually. It's going to give me a show in winter🥰🙌

I know the brown is kind of a turn off to a lot of people, but I like the simplistic brown and yellow, and the brown leans orange and I do like orange blooms. This one is used in one of my favorite hybrids, Brassostele Tarantula (along with Brassia/Ada aurantiaca).

I came here for the orchids and left with some books for my reading list. Your orchids are gorgeous (who cares about the crinkly leaves with such great blooms?!), but I'm always distracted by your bookshelves, too. The cover of the Silo series caught my eye so thank you for the Ada lesson and the book suggestions!

I'd be hard pressed to choose a favorite from your orchids, but this is a contender! I am a fan of the brassias

Magnifique Brassia. In France, we call it « orchidée araignée » (spider orchid) because of the long petals and sepals which are reminiscent of the long legs of spiders. Enjoy australian spring . We have a beautiful automn here in Bordeaux. Time for Cattleya !

Hi Matthew, would you consider making a The Good The Bad and The Ugly video? Orchids thatyouve found to be bullet proof/set and forget. Ones that you struggle to keep alive and ones that you dream about but will probably be divas in your environment? P.S. Do you have any maxillarias? I bought a mislabeled masdevallia at an orchid show on the weekend that turns out to be a maxillaria nigrescens.Oopsy! Probably an attendee reading the label from a nearby mazzie and plugging it mistakenly into my maxillaria. There's next to nothing on RU-vid about that one. I have the general idea that it will grow like the clappers, is thirsty and hungry and is red. Cheers.

What a great idea! I will - thank you! And I have a nigrescens - keep them cool moist and light were the words of wisdom given to me! I will make a video about all of mine at some point.

Whacko! I'll be poised. I'm in Melb also. Maybe I might grow to love my orphan interloper after all.

Hi Matthew, I know this comment isn't about the Brassia but I don't know how else to contact you and ask a question. I remember you doing a video about Odontoglossum pulchellum and wondered if it had flowered again since that first time? I have just read an article that says if you don't give it a long very dry spell from when new growths reach maturity in autumn for about 6 months it will grow but not flower. I have one that's about to go into its first winter and you say don't let it dry out? 🤷‍♀️
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 10 месяцев назад
Hmm! Well I don't let mine dry out. I water it much less in winter but still water it. I do have a care video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DywfPr-Wm7E.html Good luck!
