Cabbage is another member of the Brassica family that is full of nutrients, including vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, as well as various antioxidants. The American Cancer Society strongly urges an increased intake of cabbage and other Brassicas in the diets of North Americans. Eating lots of cabbage may also protect the eyes from macular degeneration. To preserve its vitamins and mineral content, do not overcook cabbage.

I started growing my napa cabbage after I watched your guys older videos, and learned to make kimchi from Nancy! I can't handle it as spicy as she can so I make it more like the one she makes for Hollis. She really started me on my journey of loving fermentation. Did you reseed in the end? You said something about too hot and germination? About 60 days? I'm sorry but I had to laugh, when you cut that first one, and Nancy had her hands and arms extended, waiting for you to hand it to her, waiting, waaaaaaaaiting, anxiously, I almost shouted at the screen, "HOLLIS, GIVE THE GIRL HER CABBAGE❗❗❗❗❗ lololol "AnticIPAAA aaaaaation, IS makin me wait, Keepin me waaa aaa aaa aaa AAaiting!" 🎶 Very Nice Harvest. Think we'll try some succession planting with this one next year. TYFS, Stay Safe and Well Mark and Rosa

Sry i may hav missed it but why do we need thining from two seed to one ? Would it be easier to just grow one seed per pot ?
@ShereenaD
@ShereenaD Год назад
Planting more than one seed per pot verifies germination. If you only plant one seed and it doesn't germinate, you've wasted time. When planting two or three, at least one will grow and you keep the strongest.

Im curious if the stump would produce seed for you after removing the harvest. I planted a cabbage stump bearly rooted and it bloomed and made seeds. But i didnt net the seed pods so the birds came to eat them... i didnt think cabbage seed was a treat.

@HollisNancysHomestead
@HollisNancysHomestead 4 года назад
In the refrigerator, it stays fresh about 3-6 months - and continues to ferment, which may lead to a sourer taste but creating more good bacteria. Some people have up to year for me it too long. Check and make sure its not mushy. Also put in several smaller bottle (DON't OPEN) until use with leaf on top to keep the brine below the kimchi with cabbage leaf and put a plastic lid (has slow leak of air) so it does not create a bomb. Put it with something on the bottom of kimchi bottle to make sure it does not leak on to the refrigerator. ENJOY :-)

You and Nancy have absolutely been wonderful inspiration for me. I've always loved having a vegetable garden but health problems, and the depression that creeped in, caused me to lose interest in almost everything. By watching your videos I began wanting to grow vegetables again. After the wanting came the doing. I already had a few large containers and I've gone to my local bakery and they've given me 3 and 5 gallon food grade buckets. My husband drilled the drainage holes and bought me other needed supplies. I'm outside again doing things that I enjoy. I just wanted you both to know how very much you've helped me. Thank you.

If I could make a suggestion regarding your germination rate on your cabbage. On the packet it says Germination rate 97%, this would be optimal conditions. Your best germination will always be from using Heat Pads, (hydroponic or greenhouse supply companies) in conjunction with clear plastic domes. I realize that your dealing with periodic excessive heat, so I would place Frost blankets as curtains in front of your racks to reduce sun exposure hitting the black trays and possibly provide adequate air circulation with some small clamp fans in the daytime. The one thing I can say for sure is that if you reduce your stress, either sun, heat or cold and create consistent ideal heat source, you should be able to achieve at least 100% - 97% and those cabbage will pop in few days, not two weeks. Cheers!

I haven't looked in on you guys for awhile now, glad you are doing well in Florida. Was wondering how you would deal with the deer, I see that fence! Those cabbages are spectacular, and lucky chickens! You both look great...so glad for you!
