Caladiums are easy to grow tropical plants that's look fantastic as houseplants or as outdoor plants for tropical and Exotic style gardens. Caladiums are easy to grow from their dormant tubers which is a much more affordable way to buy them. Although Caladiums grow slowly at first, once the first colourful leaves emerge the plant will grow very quickly!
Plant your Caladium bulbs (tubers) in spring using a good moisture retaining compost. The Caladiums tubers should be planted at a depth of 5cm-10cm with the pointy end facing upwards. Water in your Caladium tubers well to bring them out of dormancy and leave in a warm sunny spot.
Within about 6-10 weeks your Caladium plants will have emerged and produced their colourful leaves. To care for your Caladiums ensure they are kept in a humid environment such as your kitchen or bathroom. if you want to grow Caladiums elsewhere such as your living room or garden then spray with your plants with water frequently to maintain humidity around your Caladium plants. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and feed weekly to help your Caladium plants maintain their bright colours. Caladiums love shady conditions so be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight. Caladium leaves are also very fragile so these plants will not cope with strong winds if planted outdoors in a tropical and exotic styled garden.

Hi there! First of thanks for sharing everything you know about caladiums. Ive been thinking of getting some caladium bulbs and found your video. Now that its almost fall/winter i need your expert advice if i should wait to plant them. I live in Georgia so i get humidity here and no snow so im sure i can grow them here just not sure when to plant them. I wanted to do them in pots as well. But do you think i can grow them outdoors too? If i do plant them outdoors does that mean i have to get the bulbs out every winter time? Thanks so much again!

If I want to plant my bulbs in a pot, what’s the minimum diameter pot I should use if I plant just one bulb in it? I just got some bulbs and living in Northern California, I’m also wondering if it’s too early to plant them if I start them indoors. One more question: if I start them indoors, how necessary is it that they are in sunlight? I know it’s not the same thing, but I once grew a pot of catnip in a dark bathroom drawer. Any answers to these questions will help me so much. Thanks so much for this super informative video.

I recently bought one and to me it seems as if the plant may need a bigger pot but it also seems to be growing fine. Do I repot once the roots start to over crowd the soil? Or when the plant(s) are over more than half of the pot size? I want to make sure I am giving it what it needs. Please help a new grower out

One of the outdoor photos you've shown, there are ferns, rex begonias, and caladiums mingled all together. Is that your own garden? If so, I would like to know what is the silver-leafed plant with burgundy stems nearest the camera in the right corner. I believe I had some cuttings of that, many years ago, but it did not survive, and I can't remember what it is. I feel like it's something within the Acanthaceae family, based on the leaf structure, and it looks very similar to my persian shield. Just with slight difference in texture and color difference.

Hello, in my experience with Colocasias the colour gets lighter when they are stressed. I'm not sure if they will root but by all means do experiment and let me know how it goes 👍🌱😃
@katrinahuff9550
@katrinahuff9550 2 года назад
I realize this is an old comment, so your plants are probably not still alive... You'd need the bulb. This isn't a type of plant who can grow roots from just a leaf (some can, like begonias!).... but please don't poach plants from their natural habitat. Not only does that possibly deplete the natural environment and population of that plant, but it's usually quite illegal without a horticultural/botanical harvesting license. You may also get into trouble bringing plants back home, coming through customs. There is strict rules and licensing involved to do that legally. Caladiums are often very affordable and easy to find in many colors, in shops and online.

Cool and dry is a good way to store them, I keep most of my seeds and bulbs that way 👍

How many bulbs do you plant in one pot?

I just purchased my first caladium for a house plant. Do I understand correctly that it will not thrive over winter but must be dried out and rest? I live in zone 5 with cold winters and don’t want to dig up every year. I just wanted a house plant with the beautiful colors of red leaves trimmed in green. What should I do. 8/15/23 at 4:00 pm. Thank you

That’s correct, allow it to go dormant over winter and just keep the soil in the pot dry. When it starts to regrow in spring begin watering again.

Humidity... my room seems to have a humidity of around 60% in winter- is that ok for Caladiums?

Perfect, each new leaf produced in that environment should stay pristine 👍

If caladium is kept indoors, can’t it stay all year round without storing it away in the dry dark place for dormancy?

I have known people who have managed to do this, yes. I'm not sure if it benefits the plan is health in the long term or not?

So during dormancy will the plant leaves dry up and die? or it just will not grow more UNTIL spring?
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 3 года назад
The leaves dry up and drop off, in dormancy it is just a dry tuber below soil level 😀🌱

I did dig mine up because it was over a month…I put them back in the dirt and they are starting to pop up… I may have had them upside down😬
