Corals have long since been in the news for being at risk of bleaching. At Georgia Aquarium, a team of biologists are helping restore coral in the wild-by cultivating them in the lab.

You can grow corals at home which is a lot of work and a lot of money xP reef tanks are what you can do to grow them yourself but heads up it’s crazy expensive and it’s a good market for an experienced reefer or if your a beginner reefer try zoas and mushrooms

Amazing work, I’m a student getting my undergraduates degree in marine biology, and we do a lot of work like this, we recently in the beginning of august collected the spawning from A.PAL because they are endangered. For my thesis I will be looking at micro-fragmentation on artificial substrates as a way for reef restoration. I’m currently working on my proposal and January next year I am to begin my work......I’m excited........Great video!!!!!

@ To be fair, the reason we need to breed Elkhorn and Staghorn now is because there was an epidemic that wiped 95% of them out and although they are recovering in some places, that's not the same for everywhere and in some places it's much slower than optimal if at all.
@dominiquebryan2039
@dominiquebryan2039 4 года назад
And as she said, it's relatively hard for them to reproduce with the small population size. If you look at historical records of their populations and look at them now you will see the huge difference. They literally use to dominate the shallow reefs but now they are rare and endangered

Lardah420 that sounds like a bad idea lol atleast in the wild
@--Paws--
@--Paws-- 6 лет назад
Like what Combed Autumn said it would be a bad idea. If corals were bred for one factor in nature another influence can cause corals to die off again. We should just let nature thrive in their own. We have already made bacteria resistant to our medicine and they did that on their own.
@herper6
@herper6 6 лет назад
It’s an interesting concept, but there are so many thousands of species that it would be almost impossible to do that with the majority of species. Not to mention seeing corals in spawn in captivity is incredibly rare. It is highly dependent on perfect conditions and lunar cycles. Captive spawning of corals is almost unheard of, however I’ve personally witnessed my anemones spawning and I know some species of tridacna clams have also spawned.

Growing new coral colonies (correction: "Attempting to grow...") from fertilized embryos was one of my jobs as a research assistant at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia in 2000. Needless to say, I had no success after one spawning event and soon left to work on infectious diseases. I am now a science teacher and will show this video to my students today. It is nice to see that perseverance and ingenuity has won out in this field. Also reassuring that it took 9 years to establish this technique - so I don't feel so bad about having no luck in the few months that I spent attempting to do this all those years ago. Thanks for the video.

Not if you say something like "when I grow up". I hate to say this but that is kind of trivial. I'm sure language matters in many settings, but kind of missing the point of this video. The fact that we have to intervene to replenish coral into reef says a lot about the state of some of these areas.
