i am your latest subscriber from India and am looking forward to growing my own veggies. Now i understood why my garlic cloves in the soil never sprouted in the month of april. So i kept a few pods in the fridge. Now its time to wait
I thank you a million times!! You left nothing out. I live very next to the equator and im tired of eating bleached garlic from the Oriental...you are awsome!!!!!
I live in fl and have noticed alot of Bodegas and Asian groceries tend to keep their garlic refrigerated. I tend to buy from there for growing as they already did the fridge work.
garlic was the one thing I didn't bother trying to grow (I'm at 14 degrees south latitude, off grid on 25 acres of rainforest, it doesn't get more tropical) I didn't know you could put the bulbs in the fridge to get them ready to sprout! this changes everything. My three favorite aromatics are onion, chilli and garlic. I grow my own onion and chilli. going to put some cloves of garlic in the fridge today.
Thats cool. (: howd it go ? Im in middle Usa and im now going to try to take store bought garlic out of the fridge and plant them in a pot outside.. like after they sprout .. and its hot outside here now. i wonder if theyll grow ..hmm.
I’ve heard from a few people experimenting with refrigerating for the verification period, but have found that the ones they put in the fridge compared to ones non refrigerated the fridge ones would be smaller than those that weren’t in the fridge from USA growers. I’m in Australia but I usually grow soft necks with good results from store brought garlic, but this year I just harvested hard garlic from a store, as they all had scapes. Again they grew well, non fridges as they had began to shot hence buying them cheap. Perhaps if I want to grow from this years harvest of Hard Neck Garlic, I will need to get them in the fridge to last me to plant them in our autumn about April as they don’t last as long in storage as the Soft Neck varieties. Perhaps more studies needed, for this theory, I understand in cold climates you can plant them early before winter and they grow their roots in that time in the snow as long as they don’t freeze hence mulching, before the leaf starts growing in Spring, you can have it in the ground just after 3 months of harvest in snowy cold climates.😀 I will select some Hard Neck Garlics and fridge them before they are unusable for 2022
I live in California and our grocery store California grown garlic likes to germinate right on the counter top, even in hot temperatures. I think you could plant our cultivars directly in the summer with no problem.
While I'm not in a super warm climate, this video was still super helpful! I think the garlic I planted months ago might be ready for harvest now. Thank you :)
Left them in the fridge for 1-2 months and not on purpose. ^_^ I water everyday and added compost, and it's working well in the AZ desert, atm. I'm not an expert though
Regards from Sabah, east Malaysia. I've following all yr videos n this video really caught my attention. I tried to plant garlic x2 no success. Thank you this informative n easy tips you shared. I hope I'll succed this time
This is such a great idea if you missed your chance to plant garlic in the fall...at least for me I will try both ways to experiment...I planted my garlic cloves in September and I will try this method in January or February and again another great video so nice to always learn something each time I watch your videos..all the best from NY!
You're so right. And now that I'm growing almost exclusively in planters, I can basically plant them at any time indoors and then bring them out whenever. Works like a charm!
I have watched your shows for a long time but I never subscribed. Today I am just because of this feature. I’m in the Caribbean and actually will apply this method and see what happens. So I will put my garlic in the fridge for 2 months and plant out in February hopefully, I will have garlic by June. Thanks for the info. Next do potatoes for the Caribbean 😀😀
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Well I actually can’t wait to see what you have in store. It will actually be interesting to see. Where do you get your potatoes from?
@@alstoncharmainesmith4781 Thanks! For my potatoes, I just got them from the grocery store! I want to make sure that everyone who wants to follow along can do it!
Your videos are very helpful! I am literally about to go put my garlic in soil now so timing to have found this couldn't have been any better! I've had some store bought cloves in water for less than a week and the amount of roots is seriously impressive! Also the sprout (?), stock(?) LOL idk the terms but a few are nearly 3 inches already!!! I live in Phx and honestly didn't plan this but they started sprouting in my garlic container so I figured why not try it out since I am already potting up my other plants. They never saw the inside of the fridge but I was keeping them by my balcony door which gets opened a lot so I'm thinking they got enough "cold" that way? Thanks again for your ever so helpful videos, I've totally been binge watching for a couple of hours now 🤣 ✌️
I planted my garlic about a month ago… May. I live in zone 6b. I did not refrigerate my garlic. But I’m wondering now if I should cover with my sawdust mulch I’ve been using in my other beds? I’m super new to gardening and learning soooo much. Thank you for your videos!
Zone 6b planting garlic in May likely won't result in a crop of garlic. It should be planted in the fall, overwintered in the ground, and harvested around June of the following year.
I live in far north Australia and have managed to get garlic to seed in about 4 weeks in the fridge as you said. I'm also trying a trick where they sit with the bottom end in water but it's too early to tell the result. As far as the actual growing goes I'm just waiting to see
I planted garlic this teached Me a lot when to harvest garlic thank you so much I’m so scribe and I left it like thank you so much I hope you have a good day
Any advice on how to prevent secondary sprouting a.k.a witches broom? I always have a high percentage of plants that send up little green shoots between the main leaves when the garlic is about a month or 2 from harvest. Appears to be caused by fluctuating temperatures in late winter early spring, cold, warm, cold, warm.
Perfect video. Thanks so much. Very informative and this is highly appreciated. It's so honest and this is the only place we can learn actual skills unlike schools and universities who teach impractical things. Even though school has its good attributes. However life skills is kept from man because we are all in political webs
Thank you so much for sharing this! Ive been looking for ways to grow garlic in our warm climate🌞 would you suggest to cover the garlic while its in the fridge? Is it okay if it gets moist? Thank you!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Put the garlic in the fridge 11/20. Put the separated cloves in pots, with potting mix today, outside on the lanai. Have to get some straw, but other than that, good to go. Will report results this coming summer. Thanks. Stay warm up there!
You’re so funny 🤣 Jeff, I love your little one he’s the cutest Prince 🤴🏻 Charming Ever ..!!! That’s so true, (warm) indoors the shoots are so much longer and grown over night larger every day, now I have to get some kind of mentor supporting the long leaves, they’re falling all directions, was wondering where do you get your straws from because I would really love to get some ASAP. I hate seeing opened soil esp. Indoors.. kindly let me know where I can buy some please. I checked most of the hardware store in my area (Toronto) and everything “garden” is puts away cause of: WINTER 🥶 ❄️ Thanks for sharing 🙏🇨🇦
Yeah, the indoor leaves flopping over....hate that. Hard to correct, but easy to prevent. Once they sprout, the leaves need air flow (a fan). That usually toughens them up in short order! :-)
WOW, I honestly didn’t known of that (a fan) so I will definitely put on tonight next to it and see what happens in the morning. I was thinking to tight it all together from flopping all over the place, That’s unbelievable, I had no idea they needs a fan. They’re like 15inches high, and getting longer everyday. Thanks a million Jeff.🙏🇨🇦
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms oh yeah.. Can you imagine lol, first time experience, I’m so excited... I can’t wait to see the outcome at the end, and able to still grow indoors (winter) my God it’s the Best Ever..!!! Thanks Jeff🙏🇨🇦 Oh Quick question: “what vegetables ( head start) can I start growing now indoors for upcoming spring/summer. Oh making a videos would be great” 👍 Thanks 🙏 🇨🇦
Iv never grown any veg I live in spain and is beginning of May but I saw some of my garlic was sprouting so I put the cloves in a empty cardboard egg container and left them on the side in the kitchen and just lightly sprayed each day for a week then the green leaves started to sprout after another week I planted them in a ceramic pot on my terrace as I do not have a garden 3 of the cloves sprouted and other 3 had roots so I put them in them in the pot being curious who knows maybe I do have green fingers ☺
I planted green onions two weeks ago I'm in Houston they're growing. I'm also growing lettuce. How do I keep my pepper plant alive during winter? Even though we don't get many cold days sometimes it can drop to the 30's
Awesome, sounds like you're making it happen! For your Peppers, I have a video on how to do it step-by-step: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x09X87UCZTI.html
I have not planted my garlic yet. It is still in the fridge for 1 week now. I always use loam soil (7in1) to all my attempted plantings, which I guess my plants are doing good. However, the soil dries easily but I am trying to be careful not to drown my plants. Am excited to plant my own garlic.
Yeah, the real sandy loams can dry quick because they drain so well. Just up the compost content to get some more water retention and make sure to mulch. That will go a long way to helping the evaporation. Best of luck!!
What i did to increase the growing period for the garlic was let like the below third of garlic be submerged in water for about 5 days and roots would he seen easily. I then transplanted them into a container. I just have to wait now. Great video though
it depends of the type of garlic. I've tried it. It works on softneck garlic. hardneck garlic should be put in the fridge so it can starting it cycle of life. put hardneck garlic in water not only wasting of time but make it rot. I've waited months until it really rot though.
So if in an environment where temperatures get over 30 degree Celcius in summer and around 24 -28 C. Would it be better to chill in the fridge during the summer months and grow in the winter?
I'm in SE Texas and it gets pretty humid. I have ordered my softneck garlic for fall planting. So upon receiving, I'll put in fridge for 2 months, then plant beginning of December then harvest by May? When i hang dry, will the humidity affect them? Thank you for your video, I feel confident for my first time growing.
Thanks you for the video... Really liked the video... And learned something new.🎩. I also liked the way you narrate... You are unique... Keep it up... Thanks again... 😁 👕👍Great! 👖
You got some sexy garlic there, dude! LOL! Seriously, your videos are very informative and easy to follow! I'm able to get my garlic to grow without having to vernalize it, but they always produce smaller bulbs than the original bulbs.
Hey buddy, the small bulbs can be a few things. But without the chilling period, the Garlic bulbs will ALWAYS be small. Its the chilling period that gets them to set and grow big the following summer.
Hey man i loved your video. I live in Southern punjab in pakistan and the climate here is pretty warm actually. I want to know what i can do to make my garlic germinate faster? Im a farmer not a gardner to be clear. Thanks mate.
Hey Hassaan! There's no real trick to getting it to sprout faster...it has an internal clock and it'll sprout when its ready. Chill it, then moisture and heat usually starts the process. Best of luck!!
Like I leaving in Miami Florida where the temperature are warm can I plant garlic anytime . And I also enjoyed your video waiting your answer thank you
Thank you for this tip on planting garlic in warm climate. I’m about to try planting some. The bulbs have shoots already. Do I still chill them for 8 weeks before planting ? Appreciate your advice.
Bought a soft neck garlic to plant from my supplier. Not knowing it should be a fall planting here in Missouri. I’m going to follow the mentioned 4-8 weeks in my frig. My concern is there are a couple small green shoots beginning. Will I be ok planting after my frig wait period?
Attempting to grow for the first time in Mexico City, which is not tropical but temperate (slightly above freezing at night in winter, but daytime temps between 15-20C). Which variety would you recommend? Should I do a vernalization step in the fridge? How can I tell whether a store bought variety is hardneck or softneck?
Hey Luis, the fridge step definitely won't hurt them. The swings in temperature might be tough if your days get super hot. For varieties, my first choice is to ALWAYS look at what's available at roadside stands, farmer's markets, etc...what are the PROS using? What varieties do they choose? Copy that. Your local nurseries and home garden centers will also bring in Garlic bulbs to plant....they'll bring in the right varieties for your area. With your unique climate, I wouldn't choose the random Chinese garlic at the supermarket....it might not work.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Many thanks for your great reply. You are right that our weather is quite unique, so I will try to find a variety grown locally. I just recently found your channel and it's become one of my favorites. I have already used many of your great tips. Great videos!!!
@@luisservin3583 Thanks so much for that Luis, appreciate it! Definitely go local.....always grow what the pros are growing because they've already done the hard work! Once you find a variety that works for you, you'll never have to buy Garlic again! Let us know how it goes! :-)
I missed that part to put the garlic in the fridge at least 4 weeks and planted 3 rows of garlic guess I will experiment this time may have wasted some garlic 😒 citrus county Florida
I grow garlic in Florida. Don't refrigerate your garlic in plastic, use a mesh or paper bag. Also, if you are in the deep South, wait until daytime temperatures get cool before planting. Garlic really doesn't like 80 degree temps.
Give it a try....can't hurt. Give it a longer chilling period in that case. Check out local farmer's markets and see if any are grown locally. Copy what they use and do! :-)
Hi, I've tried 2 times with the hardneck. Once fail before set the bulbs. Second also fail because the bulb are so small almost like a clove size. The tropical climate is too hot for growing hardneck garlic. But I am in the low altitude, where temperature range 26-34 degrees C. if you live in higher altitude, like 1000m of sea level, where the temperature range 15-24 degrees C, probably you could grow hardneck variety. Hope that help.
Weirdly enough im a warm climate but coastal and because of that my climate is wacky compared to what you would think it is and softneck garlic does not grow well here but hardneck does.
The only downside this year has been garlic rust, I did luckily catch it early and sprayed some azoxystrobin and its stalled out the spread mostly and some of it appears to be turning white so i think it may be dying so I got really lucky in that regard hope for some decent bulbs when i pull them up later this year. Rust is not fun. I had perfect garlic then got a rainstorm that was not forecasted at all and then all hell broke loose and I didnt have a chance to spray preventative. @@TheRipeTomatoFarms
Depends on where you live Veronica, but probably not. At some point, you're working against the plant's natural cycle and what it needs to complete the process to give you food. Garlic is still a 6-7 month plant no matter how fast you accelerate the early growth. Planting it in the summer means you are going to try to harvest it in the winter time At that point, you might as well just plant it in the fall and harvest it the following year like it should be grown. However, for Garlic greens it can be grown at any time and some people prefer the greens to the bulbs anyways! :-)
I need your help please! I live in zone 7A and planted my garlic on 11/7/2020. Our weather has been cold and warm off and on. On 12/30/2020, to my surprise my garlic has sprouts and we still had a whole winter to go! I am in panic mode because I am not sure what to do next! Any recommendations! Thanks for all your help! Althea
Hey Althea.....rest easy. You do nothing. Garlic will sprout half the time. Nothing to worry about. The could freeze and completely die off, yet the Garlic growing underneath, if mulched, will be just fine. Mine sprout all the time, then die off with a freeze, then come back in the spring. Dig one clove out and you'll see its all about the underneath growth...that's what's important.
I live in Central Florida zone 9 b. I hate to say it but I’ve tried this several times over the years, and it never works. I’ve seen videos for years claiming this method will work, but unfortunately it never does for me or my buddies.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms so the first couple years I did use the garlic from the store, but as I started taking my gardening more seriously I did the research and tried softneck. I tried one variety one year, with poor results. The following year I tried another variety, and the results were a little better, but in my opinion not worth taking up the space in the garden. Right now I’ve got about a dozen elephant garlics in the soil. I know it’s not a real “garlic”, but if it grows well I’ll be happy with it.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Our weather is very unpredictable. It could be in the 90’s on Christmas. We could get three nights in the 30’s all winter, or two weeks below freezing. I just think it’s too hot, but I don’t know. Maybe if I wanted to spend the money I could buy a bunch of varieties, and possibly find one that’d grow well. Unfortunately I just don’t have the space to sacrifice, when I could be growing other vegetables to feed the family. If that makes sense.
@@THECOUNTRYNINJA weather is that one factor that can mess everything up. For sure. I'd love to grow citrus trees here, but I realize it'll never be possible (well, with climate change, you never know! Lol)...
