Mike, I add a thick layer of compost and plant the bulbs into that in fall. In the Spring, I fertilize twice with fish emulsion or vermicompost and comfrey tea--whatever I have available. I do not fuss with commercial fertilizers but focus on enriching my soil. Garlic is not a heavy feeder. But, it is nice to give it a boost while the weather is still cool. To cover all my trace minerals I usually add sea water to my fertilizer tea (100 fresh water per 1 part sea water). I dry the garlic in my attic for about a month. But, I am going to do it for 6 weeks this year because I noticed the bulbs are not storing well into the next Spring. So, going to try to dry them a bit longer this year. I hope that helps!
